The Minnesota Wild acquired winger Chuck Kobasew from the Boston Bruins for wingers Craig Weller and Alexander Fallstrom, as well as a second-round draft pick in 2011.
What does it give the Minnesota Wild? The Wild is struggling lately with the injury bug, as forwards Martin Havlat, Pierre-Marc Bouchard, and Petr Sykora (to name a few) are sidelined. That makes a 20-goal guy such as Kobasew key at this point, especially for a team that's trying to get back on the winning track right now. Kobasew is off to a slow start, but the change of scenery should help.
What does it give the Boston Bruins? This deal achieves several objectives for Boston: they not only create some salary-cap space by moving Kobasew, but they send a message to their slumping club while adding some solid pieces for the future. Fallstrom (who is currently a freshman at Harvard University) is clearly the key, but so is the 2011 second rounder. Meanwhile, Weller might prove to be a useful role player later this season.
