The Toronto Maple Leafs acquired winger Phil Kessel from the Boston Bruins for a first-round draft pick in 2010, a second-round draft pick in 2010 and and first-round draft pick in 2011.
What does it give the Toronto Maple Leafs? In Kessel, the Maple Leafs land a game-breaker up front--something that was missing from the line-up. He has a chance to become the team's best goal-scoring winger since the days of Alexander Mogilny. He will start his Maple Leafs career late, since he's still recovering from off-season shoulder surgery.
What does it give the Boston Bruins? The Bruins were having trouble coming to terms with Kessel, and his style of play never meshed well with coach Claude Julien, so GM Peter Chiarelli decided to take Toronto's draft-pick package as compensation. It's a gamble on Boston's part, since Kessel did lead the club with 36 goals in 2008-09. They've added good future assets.
