The San Jose Sharks acquired winger Dany Heatley and a fifth-round draft pick in 2010 from the Ottawa Senators for wingers Milan Michalek and Jonathan Cheechoo, as well as a second-round draft pick in 2010.
What does it give the San Jose Sharks? The Sharks land a great sniper in Heatley, albeit one that comes with a little baggage left over from Ottawa. He should become an instant hit alongside Joe Thornton, but the Sharks lose a little winger depth by dealing two for one in this trade. The salaries more or less even out, but the Sharks don't have much to spend to fill out their roster.
What does it give the Ottawa Senators? The Senators had to move the disgruntled Heatley so adding two wingers for their top-six forward situation, and dealing only one, makes sense. They also added a second rounder to this deal, so the return is fair. They didn't hit a home run with this trade, which is what 50-goal scorers usually land, but it's still a solid move for the Sens.
