Blue Jackets left wing Nick Foligno could be a quality fantasy bench player this year.

Impact
Foligno has the talent to be a good fantasy contributor, but he has to be in the right situation. Foligno might not begin the season on a scoring line due to the additon of Scott Hartnell and other young developing players for the Blue Jackets. If Columbus suffers a couple injuries or the Ryan Johansen holdout becomes a bigger issue, Foligno is more than capable of getting more ice time and producing.

Atkinson scored 21 goals last year, but the team has gone on record that the forward's potential is closer to 30 goals per season. Atkinson has struggled with his lack of size, which is why playing with the big bruiser, Hartnell, will help Atkinson so much. No one knows yet if indeed Atkinson and Hartnell will be paired together but better to be proactive in the draft than reactive later on during the season.

Our projections have Hartnell scoring 24 goals and 34 assists in his first year in Columbus. Hartnell should continue to provide across-the-board contribution to all stats, in particular, to the power play. sportsnetwork.com

Impact
The latest report says Johansen is asking for two years, $4.7 million per year. The Blue Jackets would still like their center's demands to lower even more before they begin serious negiotiations. We think Johansen will easily repeat his 2013-2014 numbers, 33 goals, 30 assists, and 237 shots, if a contract is agreed upon before the season, but we are still concerned that woun't happen.

Ryan Johansen willing to sign for two years | 07/21/2014 9:41 AM
News
Ryan Johansen's agent has reportedly made the Columbus Blue Jackets a two-year offer.
Columbus Dispatch

Impact
Johansen is a restricted free agent and previously called the Blue Jackets insistence on a shot-term contract a "slap in the face," so the fact that they're now willing to settle for a two-year deal is huge. He broke out last season with 33 goals and 63 points, but he didn't do much offensively in his first two NHL seasons. It's not hard to see why the Blue Jackets would want to hedge their bets by inking him to a short-term deal under the circumstances, although we don't think Johansen's 2013-14 campaign was a fluke.

We countered, but we came to an agreement pretty quickly. It was a good situation, and there wasn't really a bad moment with it." Dubinsky inked a six-year, $35.1 million extension with the Columbus Blue Jackets that will start with the 2015-16 campaign. He's one of the Blue Jackets' leaders and now that he's locked up, he might start the 2014-15 campaign as their captain.

"It was a tough decision, actually, because turning pro would be exciting and because it was possible. But when I sat down with (Blue Jackets general manager) Jarmo Kekalainen and the coaching staff, and when I talked to the coaches back in Minnesota, we all agreed it was best for me." Reilly has been bulking up to the point where he's 6-foot-1 and 186 pounds, but he plans to get bigger.

Tropp was a restricted free agent. He had 10 points and 37 penalty minutes in 44 games in 2013-14.
Ryan Johansen unlikely to leave Blue Jackets | 07/05/2014 9:42 AM
News
Ryan Johansen, the Blue Jackets' leading scorer last season, is free to negotiate with all NHL teams but don't expect the high-scoring center to be playing with any team other than Columbus next season.
Columbus Dispatch

Impact
Johansen can receive offer sheets from other clubs, and he probably will, but Columbus GM armo Kekalainen has said he will match any offer sheet Johansen could sign, and he can, because the club is about $18 million under the salary cap. "If he signs an offer sheet, he signs an offer sheet," Kekalainen said. "Our ownership is strong, and I said before, we would match any offer he could possibly sign. If somebody wants to waste their time and effort on that, that's fine for them. We'd just match it and keep the player." Johansen had 33 goals and 30 assists with Columbus last season.
Blue Jackets re-sign defenseman David Savard | 07/05/2014 9:36 AM
News
The Columbus Blue Jackets have re-signed restricted free agent defenseman David Savard to a two-year deal worth $2.6 million.
Columbus Dispatch

Impact
Savard will make $1.3 million in each of the next two seasons, a significant raise from the $709,000 he made in 2012-13. The 23-year-old climbed the depth chart and earned significant playing time last season after an off-season workout program made him slimmer and quicker. In 70 games, he had five goals, 10 assists, 28 penalty minutes and a plus-2 rating. He also had four assists and four penalty minutes in the Blue Jackets' first-round Stanley Cup playoffs loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Savard, a fourth-round pick (No. 94 overall) in 2009, will come to training camp in September as the likely third-pair defensive partner of Dalton Prout. But Tim Erixon and Cody Goloubef -- both of whom will need to clear waivers before they can be sent to AHL Springfield -- will compete for that spot, too. The Blue Jackets' top four defensemen from last season -- Fedor Tyutin - Jack Johnson and Ryan Murray - James Wisniewski -- are all returning.
Blue Jackets sign Brian Gibbons to 2-way deal | 07/04/2014 4:04 PM
News
The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed Brian Gibbons to a one-year, two-way deal.
Columbus Dispatch

Impact
Gibbons had five goals and 17 points in 41 games with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2013-14. He'll have a tough time earning a spot on the Blue Jackets' opening game roster and even if he does, we doubt he'll have any fantasy value in standard leagues.
Jerry D'Amigo will fight for fourth line spot | 07/02/2014 9:06 AM
News
Jerry D'Amigo is expected to compete for a fourth line spot during training camp.
Columbus Dispatch

Impact
Columbus acquired D'Amigo from the Toronto Maple Leafs on July 1. The 23-year-old forward had a goal and three points in 22 games in 2013-14.
D'Amigo traded to Jackets for Frattin | 07/01/2014 1:32 PM
News
The Blue Jackets have acquired Jerry D'Amigo from the Maple Leafs for Matt Frattin.
Rotoworld.com

Impact
D'Amigo, was a decent producer in the AHL last season, but he has had limited success in the NHL. With the Maple Leafs in 2013-14 he registered a mere three points in 22 games. On the plus side, D'Amigo had a strong playoffs in the AHL. As his future role with the Jackets is not clear, we wouldn't be putting D'Amigo on our a draft lists at this time.
Frederic St. Denis signs with Columbus | 07/01/2014 10:15 AM
News
Frederic St. Denis has agreed to a one-year, two-way deal with the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Bluejackets.nhl.com

Impact
St. Denis had nine goals and 26 points in 60 games with the AHL Springfield Falcons last season. The 28-year-old should strictly be regarded as an organizational depth defenseman.
Jackets aren't likely to make a major splash | 07/01/2014 9:00 AM
News
The Columbus Blue Jackets don't plan on making a big splash on July 1.
Columbus Dispatch

Impact
The Blue Jackets lured Nathan Horton to Columbus last summer, but GM Jarmo Kekalainen thinks that at this point the team's growth needs to come from within the organization. "The team you see right now today is probably pretty close to what's going to be there when training camp starts (in September)," Kekalainen added. The Blue Jackets have a ton of cap space, although Kekalainen might not have permission to spend to the ceiling. Even if he does, he might be reluctant to because the Blue Jackets does have several young players that are going to be in line for sizable raises over the next few years and he wouldn't want to put him in a position where they're having a difficult time fitting their RFAs in under the cap.
Matt Frattin's RFA status up in the air | 06/30/2014 7:34 AM
News
The Columbus Blue Jackets have until 5 pm on Monday to decide whether or not to offer restricted free agent Matt Frattin a contract or allow him to become an unrestricted free agent.
Columbus Dispatch

Impact
Frattin bounced around this past season as the Maple Leafs traded him to the Kings for Jonathan Bernier during the 2013 off-season while the Kings sent him to Columbus at the trade deadline as part of the Marian Gaborik trade. He was a huge disappointment with only two goals and five assists in 44 games in 2013-14. Do not be surprised if he is allowed to hit free agency tomorrow.
Ryan Johansen, Jackets not close to new deal | 06/30/2014 7:30 AM
News
Ryan Johansen and the Columbus Blue Jackets are not close to inking a new contract.
Columbus Dispatch

Impact
Johansen is slated to become a restricted free agent on Tuesday and the Blue Jackets want him to sign a bridge deal but Johansen and his agents are not remotely interested in that. Johansen is coming off a breakout season in which he had 33 goals and 63 points, the youngest player in the NHL to pot 30 in 2013-14. He is only 21 years of age and wants to sign a long-term deal. "I've earned more than a two or three-year deal with my play," Johansen said. "It seems a little disrespectful, to be honest. I want to play in Columbus, and I want to be a Blue Jacket, but I want to get this done. It seems like a slap in the face." Things could be getting tense in Columbus. Stay tuned.
Blue Jackets take Ryan Collins 47th overall | 06/29/2014 8:58 AM
News
The Columbus Blue Jackets selected defenseman Ryan Collins with the 47th pick in the 2014 Draft.
Columbus Dispatch

Impact
Collins played on the same team as the Blue Jackets first round pick Sonny Milano and was thrilled to be picked by the Blue Jackets. "I couldn't ask for a better situation," Collins said after the Blue Jackets drafted him. "Sonny is a great player. I mean, a great player. I've seen what Columbus is building. They're one of the up-and-coming teams. I'm going to work hard to get there as soon as possible." GM Jarmo Kekalainen tried to trade up for Collins and couldn't, so he was pleasantly surprised when the future University of Minnesota defenseman was still available. He is a solid defensive defenseman so do not expect anything fantasy-wise when he finally makes the NHL in 4-5 years.
Jackets sign Dalton Prout to a 2-year deal | 06/28/2014 4:52 PM
News
Dalton Prout has signed a two-year contract extension with the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Bluejackets.nhl.com

Impact
He contributed six points and 37 penalty minutes in 49 games for Columbus during the 2013-14 campaign. He was credited with 99 hits and 65 blocks as well. Prout also dressed for the Blue Jackets in two playoff contests.
Blue Jackets dazzled by prospect's stamina | 06/28/2014 9:10 AM
News
Sonny Milano was picked 16th overall in the first round by the Columbus Blue Jackets partly because of his offensive talent and largely because of his stamina.
Columbus Dispatch

Impact
Milano's skating and skills are generally perceived as high-end. "Yeah, he's got all of that," Blue Jackets director of amateur scout Paul Castron said. "But he has this unbelievable passion for playing the game. He can play all day, all game. Just unbelievable stamina and a love for being on the ice. He's a coach's dream."
Jackets select Sonny Milano 16th overall | 06/27/2014 8:51 PM

The Columbus Blue Jackets have selected Sonny Milano with the 16th overall pick in the 2014 NHL entry draft Friday night.

Nikita Nikitin inks two-year deal with Oilers | 06/25/2014 9:45 AM
News
Nikita Nikitin has agreed to a two-year, $9 million contract with the Edmonton Oilers.
Bob McKenzie on Twitter

Impact
The Oilers, who gained permission from Columbus to negotiate with Nikitin, will now give the Blue Jackets a fifth round pick as compensation. Nikitin had two goals and 15 points in 66 games in 2013-14. He's a reliable top-four defenseman, but he saw his role with the Blue Jackets diminish last season, so it's not surprising that both parties decided that move on.
The Flyers traded Scott Hartnell to the Columbus Blue Jackets for R.J. Umberger on Monday. | 06/24/2014 10:46 PM
News
The Flyers traded Scott Hartnell to the Columbus Blue Jackets for R.J. Umberger on Monday.
sportsnetwork.com

Impact
The Flyers also received a fourth-round pick. Hartnell had 52 points (20 goals) in 78 games this past season. The 32-year-old has five years remaining on a six-year, $28.5 million contract and had to waive his no-trade clause. "(Flyers GM Ron Hextall) decided it was best for me to move on from the Flyers," Hartnell said. "To be honest, I was pretty shocked at first. I was upset and a little angry. I took a few days to look at the situation. It was hard." Hartnell will lose fantasy value going from Philly to Columbus.
GM likes how Scott Hartnell fits with CBJ | 06/24/2014 3:08 PM
News
Columbus GM Jarmo Kekalaine is thrilled to have Scott Hartnell in the fold.
Columbus Dispatch

Impact
"I'm excited," Kekalainen said. "We had a player who didn't want to be here anymore, and we were able to trade him for a player who makes us better in a lot of different ways, a guy who fits the very definition of how we think this club should play." The Blue Jackets landed Hartnell for a 2015 fourth-round pick and R.J. Umberger. He will likely line up alongside Brandon Dubinsky or Ryan Johansen next season.
Hartnell was told he was done in Phidelphia | 06/23/2014 5:13 PM
News
Scott Hartnell waived his no-trade clause after he was told by Flyers GM Ron Hextall that he was done in Philadelphia.
Sam Carchidi on Twitter

Impact
It sounds like Hartnell's not leaving on the best of terms. Philadelphia dealt him to Columbus on Monday in exchange for R.J. Umberger and a 2014 fourth-round pick. Hartnell was just one season into the six-year, $28.5 million contract he signed with the Flyers. For what it's worth, Hartnell added that he loved his time in Philadelphia.
Columbus re-signs backup Curtis McElhinney | 06/23/2014 1:26 PM
News
The Columbus Blue Jackets have inked Curtis McElhinney to a one-year contract extension.
Bluejackets.nhl.com

Impact
McElhinney had a 2.70 GAA and .909 save percentage in 28 games in 2013-14. He'll continue to serve as Sergei Bobrovsky's backup and figures to start in around 20 contests next season.
Jackets acquire Flyers' Hartnell for Umberger | 06/23/2014 12:21 PM
News
The Philadelphia Flyers have traded Scott Hartnell to the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for a 2015 fourth-round pick and R.J. Umberger.
Flyers.nhl.com

Impact
Hartnell is a fantastic player from a fantasy perspective. He is typically good for around 20 goals and 50 points while giving you 100-150 penalty minutes. He had a rough campaign in 2013 due in part to a broken foot, but for a physical forward, he's actually stayed remarkably healthy. We don't think the move to Columbus will significantly impact his fantasy value, given that the Blue Jackets are now a fairly competitive now.
Nathan Horton could be ready for camp | 06/22/2014 2:33 PM
News
Columbus Dispatch reporter Aaron Portzline seems optimistic about Nathan Horton being ready for Columbus Blue Jackets training camp.
Aaron Portzline on Twitter

Impact
He missed a big chunk of the 2013-14 season while recovering from offseason surgery and then had more issues once he was able to play. His 14 points in 35 games might be disappointing, yet it's probably most accurate to give him an "Incomplete" grade for this past season.
Oilers allowed to talk to Nikita Nikitin | 06/21/2014 10:45 AM
News
The Edmonton Oilers have been granted permission to talk to Columbus defenseman Nikita Nikitin.
Columbus Dispatch

Impact
The Blue Jackets will not be retaining the services of the Russian defenseman and have given the Oilers 48 hours to make a deal. If one is done, the Oilers are expected to give up a fifth round pick to Columbus, likely the one the Blue Jackets gave the Oilers when Nick Schultz went to Columbus at the trade deadline. The Oilers are looking to upgrade their blueline and Nikitin is a good five-six defenseman. He has little fantasy value with two goals and 15 points in 66 games last season.
CBJ allows Oilers to speak to Nikita Nikitin | 06/20/2014 9:30 AM
News
The Edmonton Oilers have reportedly been granted a window to negotiate with pending unrestricted free agent Nikita Nikitin.
Bob McKenzie on Twitter

Impact
It was originally reported that the Oilers had acquired Niktin's negotiation rights, but there hasn't been an actual transaction yet. If a contract is agreed upon then a trade could follow.

News
With Brad Larsen moving up to the Columbus Blue Jackets, it's believed that Jared Bednar will replace him as the AHL Springfield Falcon's head coach.
Columbus Dispatch

Impact
Bednar previously served as Larsen's assistant. The Falcons had a 47-23-1-5 record in 2013-14, but they were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the Providence Bruins.
Blue Jackets re-sign coaching staff members | 06/16/2014 1:08 PM
News
Columbus has signed associate coach Craig Hartsburg, goaltending coach Ian Clark and development coach Chris Clark to multi-year contract extensions.
NHL.com

Impact
The team also announced that Brad Larsen was being added as an assistant coach. "Our coaching staff, led by Todd Richards, has done a tremendous job and we're pleased to extend the contracts of Craig, Ian and Chris and to add a very bright young coach in Brad Larsen to the staff," GM Jarmo Kekalainen said. "We believe our coaching staff is as strong as any in the NHL and that they will continue to play pivotal roles in the development and success of our team moving forward."
Jackets face decisions with R.J. Umberger | 06/16/2014 10:37 AM
News
R.J. Umberger could be bought out by Columbus, as a last resort, if the team cannot find a trade partner for him.
Bob McKenzie on Twitter

Impact
The Blue Jackets believe they can trade him, though. Umberger requested to be dealt elsewhere in May and he still has three seasons remaining on his current contract at $4.6 million per year.
Blake Comeau likely to leave via free agency | 06/13/2014 9:57 AM
News
There haven't been any contract talks between the Blue Jackets and Blake Comeau.
Columbus Dispatch

Impact
He can become an unrestricted free agent in July and it looks like he will be permitted to test the open market. Comeau appears to caught in a numbers game, where there simply aren't enough roster spots to go around. Columbus wants to give some of their prospects a shot at making the team and there are some players who are expected to be signed instead of him. Comeau posted 16 points and 197 hits in 61 games last season.
Jackets may not sign blueliner Nikita Nikitin | 06/12/2014 12:16 PM
News
Nikita Nikitin appears as though he will be permitted to test the market as a free agent in July.
Columbus Dispatch

Impact
The Blue Jackets have plenty of young blueliners who stepped up in 2013-14 and the team is willing to give them a shot. "You can't fast-forward the young players if they're not ready," GM Jarmo Kekalainen said. "But you have to give them room to play, and to do that, you can't have too many guys in the same role. The bus gets crowded. We're working through it. There's plenty of time to get a deal done."
Jackets may keep potential UFA Jack Skille | 06/12/2014 12:08 PM
News
Columbus appears to be interested in keeping pending unrestricted free agent Jack Skille.
Columbus Dispatch

Impact
It's likely that he'll be seeking a one-way deal after he played on a two-way contract last season. Skille skated in 22 games with Springfield in the AHL and he appeared in 16 contests with the Blue Jackets.
Report: Curtis McElhinney close to re-signing | 06/12/2014 12:02 PM

Columbus Dispatch

Impact

Derek MacKenzie wants to stay in Columbus | 06/12/2014 11:58 AM
News
Derek MacKenzie said that contract talks with Columbus have been slow thus far.
Columbus Dispatch

Impact
"The Blue Jackets gave me my first real opportunity, and I'd love to stay," MacKenzie added. "We definitely have the makeup to win the Stanley Cup. ... I'd rather it not get to (the start of free agency without a contract). But I don't fear it, either; there might be an opportunity there for me. Until then, my objective is to get something done with Columbus." The Jackets are interested in bringing the potential unrestricted free agent back. He recorded 18 points and a team-leading 241 hits in 71 games this past campaign.
Falcons sign Denny Urban | 06/11/2014 6:41 PM
News

News
Trent Vogelhuber has agreed to a one-year, AHL-only deal with the Springfield Falcons.

Impact

Signing Ryan Johansen 1st on GM's to-do list | 06/07/2014 4:37 PM
News
Signing Ryan Johansen is at the top of GM Jarmo Kekalainen's to-do list.
NHL.com

Impact
"It's important that we get him signed, and I believe we will," Kekalainen told The Columbus Dispatch. "We're starting to get prepared [internally] for what it might take. The pluses are big and the minuses are few. He's a big part of our future and it's a big priority that we get him signed." He's been confident that a deal will get done since the Blue Jackets were eliminated from the playoffs by Pittsburgh. Johansen broke out offensively in 2013-14 with 33 goals and 63 points in 82 games. He'll be a restricted free agent in July.
Jackets GM excited to add Simon Hjalmarsson | 06/05/2014 12:03 PM
News
Blue Jackets GM Jarmo Kekalainen is excited to have Simon Hjalmarsson on board.
Columbus Dispatch

Impact
Columbus signed the former St. Louis Blues draft pick to a one-year, two-way contract on Wednesday. "He's just a very smart hockey player, and he's taken the steps he needed to take, from a guy on the small side to a guy who is 6 feet tall and 180 or so pounds," Kekalainen said. "He competes. He's not shy, but he's never been shy. I remember him coming to camp with St. Louis when he weighed 150 pounds, but he played like he was 220. This guy competes." Hjalmarsson, who isn't related to Chicago defenseman Niklas, generated 27 goals and 30 assists in 55 games for Linkoping in Sweden's top league this past season.
Blake Geoffrion leaves the Blue Jackets | 06/04/2014 6:47 PM

News
Simon Hjalmarsson has agreed to a one-year, two-way contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Columbus Dispatch

Impact
Hjalmarsson had 57 points and 87 penalty minutes in 55 Swedish league games in 2013-14. He was originally taken in the second round of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft by the St. Louis Blues, but he never signed with them. Blue Jackets GM Jarmo Kekalainen was the director of scouting in St. Louis when they took him and his former connection with Hjalmarsson likely played a role in his agreeing to sign with the Blue Jackets.
Coach Dan Hinote won't re-sign with CBJ | 06/04/2014 9:12 AM
News
Columbus Blue Jackets assistant coach Dan Hinote doesn't plan on signing a contract extension for the 2014-15 campaign.

Could there be a Umberger-for-Gagner trade? | 06/01/2014 10:09 AM
News
There's a rumor floating around that R.J. Umberger might be dealt to the Edmonton Oilers for Sam Gagner.
Columbus Dispatch

Impact
Take this one with a grain of salt. Umberger has requested a trade and Sam Gagner's market value did take a hit following his rough 2013-14 campaign, so at first it might not seem too bad. However, there's no question that Gagner, who will turn 25 in August, still has far more upside. Umberger can provide the Blue Jackets a list of 10 teams he won't accept a trade to and there's a good chance that the Oilers, who have struggled to gain any traction in their move away from rebuilding territory, would be one of the destinations that Umberger would reject.
