Richards will likely be scratched again Sat. | 05/24/2013 1:00 PM
News
Based on the New York Rangers' morning skate, it looks like Brad Richards will probably be a healthy scratch again on Saturday.
Katie Strang on Twitter

Impact
Richards skated with the scratches rather than participate in the Rangers' main practice. Something could still change, but it looks like the Rangers will go with the same lineup that won them Game 4.
Preds fire longtime athletic trainer Redmond | 05/24/2013 12:36 PM
News

The Nashville Tennessean

Redmond had been with the Predators since their 1998-99 inaugural season. Before that he had worked with coach Barry Trotz for five campaigns with the AHL Portland Pirates. Nashville also recently fired associate coach Peter Horachek and replaced him with Phil Housley.

The day before that, the NHL will present the other awards at 5:00 p.m. ET.
Couture: Our 'power play was brutal' | 05/24/2013 11:11 AM
News
Logan Couture hated the way the Sharks played with the man advantage on Thursday.
San Francisco Chronicle

Impact
"The power play was brutal," Couture said. "Passes weren't on, guys weren't shooting pucks, breakout was off, timing was off. There's 25 things that were wrong." The Sharks went 0-for-3 on the power play and suffered a 3-0 loss. They have to win Game 6 on Sunday to force a Game 7.
McLellan: We've got lots of room to improve | 05/24/2013 11:09 AM
News
Sharks coach Todd McLellan tried to see an upside from the Sharks' 3-0 loss in Game 5 on Thursday.
CSN Bay Area

Impact
"Game 5, coming into their building, they were going to have a hard push. We talked about that before - the 10-minute game and the 50-minute game," McLellan said. "They came hard right off the bat, but we got through that without getting scored on. The rest of the night, the other 50 minutes, we weren't very good. Moving forward, maybe that's a good thing, because we've got a lot of things to improve on. Need a better effort from a lot of people." So far the home team has won every game in this series, which is good news for the Sharks heading into Game 6. Unfortunately for them, Game 7 will be in Los Angeles, so even if they manage to try alive, they'll eventually need to beat the Kings in their arena.
Game 6 Kings-Shark time undecided | 05/24/2013 10:40 AM
News
Game 6 between the Los Angeles Kings and San Jose Sharks will be played at either 8:00 or 10:00 p.m. ET on Sunday.
LAKingsInsider.com

Impact
The deciding factor will be Game 5 of the Pittsburgh-Ottawa series on Friday. If Pittsburgh wins, then that series is over and the Kings will start at 8. If Ottawa wins, then a Game 6 will be necessary in that series, which will be played at 7:30 p.m. ET on Sunday. The Kings-Sharks game will be consequently pushed back to prevent or at least minimize the potential overlap.
Kyle Clifford gets his 1st point of playoffs | 05/24/2013 10:36 AM
News
Kyle Clifford recorded his first point of the postseason on Thursday.
LAKingsInsider.com

Impact
Clifford was moved to the top line to help spark Anze Kopitar and Justin Williams. The move worked as the three combined for the first goal in the Kings' 3-0 victory. It wouldn't be surprising to see Clifford back on the top line for Game 6 on Sunday.
Quick is Kings' franchise playoff wins leader | 05/24/2013 10:32 AM
News
With Thursday's victory, Jonathan Quick is the Kings' all-time leader in postseason wins.
LAKingsInsider.com

Impact
Quick has won 27 career playoff contests and surpassed Kelly Hrudey. "Obviously what Kelly meant to this organization 20 years ago was pretty impressive, everything he accomplished here," Quick said. He added, "He's very competitive and hated to lose, obviously. Being able to pass him on that list, obviously it's an accomplishment, but obviously wins are a team accomplishment, so you've got to give credit to the guys you played with." He also earned his seventh playoff shutout on Thursday, which puts him in a five-way tie for 18th place in the NHL's all-time leaderboard. Quick has become an amazing postseason goaltender with a 1.96 GAA and .932 save percentage.
Wings have done a great job killing penalties | 05/24/2013 10:17 AM
News
Detroit has killed 11 of Chicago's 12 power-play opportunities in the second round.
Detroit News

Impact
Chicago was 0-for-3 with the man advantage in Detroit's 2-0 victory on Thursday. "It's gotten better and better and tonight it was huge for us," Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said. Getting Drew Miller back from a broken thumb has certainly helped. Detroit has done a superb job of silencing Chicago's offense in general and consequently have a 3-1 series lead.
Jimmy Howard is leading the Red Wings | 05/24/2013 10:11 AM
News
Jimmy Howard has allowed just two goals in his last three games.
Detroit News

Impact
Howard stepped up when Detroit needed him the most at the end of the regular season and now he's rising to the occasion against the Presidents' Trophy-winning Chicago Blackhawks. Detroit has claimed a 3-1 series lead on Chicago in the second round. For a team that entered the season amid low expectations, being on the brink of the Western Conference finals is remarkable and Howard deserves a lot of credit for their accomplishments.
Zetterberg gets credit for silencing Toews | 05/24/2013 10:07 AM
News
Henrik Zetterberg is getting a lot of credit for silencing Jonathan Toews.
Detroit News

Impact
Toews has no goals and one assists in four playoff games against Detroit. "Z's doing a great job on Toews," said goaltender Jimmy Howard. "He's all over him out there. . And when Z's working as hard as he is, it really sends a message to the rest of the team that they better do their part." Zetterberg hasn't done much offensively in the second round, but as long as Howard stays sharp and Zetterberg continues to contribute in other ways, good things should continue to happen for Detroit.
Eric Wellwood's main goal is to walk again | 05/24/2013 9:58 AM
News
Flyers prospect Eric Wellwood said his main goal is to walk again after suffering major tendon and ligament damage when his lower leg was cut by a skate.
Philadelphia Inquirer & Daily News

Impact
Wellwood got the cast off his leg Thursday and officially began rehab on the injury, which occurred during an April 7 game with the Flyers' AHL affiliate. Although Wellwood hopes to play hockey again, he said his main goal is simply to be able to walk. Wellwood said doctors had never seen an injury of this nature before, meaning there's no real timetable for his recovery. It could be quite a while before he returns to the ice.
Giguere excited to have Patrick Roy as coach | 05/24/2013 9:54 AM
News
Jean-Sebastien Giguere is excited to be coached by a legendary goaltender like Patrick Roy.
Denver Post

Impact
Roy was named the Avalanche's new head coach on Thursday. "I'm really looking forward to working with him as my coach," Giguere said. "I watched him growing up, and I played against him, and now I get to play for him. It's very exciting. And in all seriousness, I think he'll be good for (Semyon Varlamov) too. To have a man like him giving you pointers as a goalie, that's not too bad." Between Giguere and Roy, Varlamov will have a lot of experience to lean on. Varlamov's tenure with the Avalanche has been a mixed bag at best, but it wouldn't be surprising to see the 25-year-old break out under these conditions.
Rick Nash delivers beautiful setup on GWG | 05/24/2013 9:51 AM
News
Rick Nash threaded a picture-perfect setup on Chris Kreider's game-winning overtime deflection in Thursday's Game 4.
NY Post

Impact
Kreider was asked after the game how it felt to have the Rangers' season on his stick and his response was near perfect. "It wasn't on my stick a very long time," Kreider said. "Nash kind of used me as a backstop, and that's what great players do." Although Nash didn't score for the 10th time in the Rangers' 11 postseason games, the pass to Kreider was about as perfect as the rookie could ask for. The puck landed just beyond the stick of defender Dougie Hamilton and the pass was hard enough to create a deflection that was really difficult for Tuukka Rask to stop in time. The Rangers need Nash to score, but assists like the one Thursday night certainly help.
McDonagh played almost 30 minutes Thursday | 05/24/2013 9:47 AM
News
Ryan McDonagh played a team-high 29:43 in the Rangers' 4-3 overtime win Thursday night.
NY Post

Impact
It's kind of amazing that's all McDonagh played considering he logged nearly 11 minutes in the first period alone. With Marc Staal (eye) already out of the lineup and Anton Stralman (undisclosed) joining him Thursday, the Rangers were counting on McDonagh to play as much as he could possibly handle. The 23-year-old defenseman has been playing big minutes since last postseason, but it's the sudden development of his offensive game that's impressed his teammates. "It's only his third year, but he expects a lot out of himself and we expect a lot out of him. He's such a good skater and handles the puck so well. He can really control games out there," said Dan Girardi. McDonagh has one goal and three points in the last four games and will need to be one the Rangers' best players Saturday night if they want to keep the series going.
Foote not ready to take on big role with Avs | 05/24/2013 9:42 AM
News
Adam Foote probably won't rejoin the Avalanche's organization in a major role next season.
Denver Post

Impact
With Patrick Roy and Joe Sakic both taking on a lot of responsibility with the Avalanche, it's natural to wonder if Foote might come back too. The former Avalanche captain is excited about Roy taking over as the team's bench boss, but Foote wants to focus on coaching his son. Consequently, Foote probably won't be one of Roy's assistant coaches, but he might help the Avalanche in some other capacity. Foote also thinks that the Avalanche still need to add a top-three blueliner to their core. Seth Jones seems like a logical fit, although Foote was hesitant to speculate about Jones specifically because Foote hasn't seen him play much.
Patrick Sharp hopes team bounces back at home | 05/24/2013 9:37 AM
News
Patrick Sharp is hoping that returning home might boost Chicago after three straight losses.
Chicago Tribune

Impact
"We have to find a way to dig in," Sharp said. "This series is going back to Chicago to play in front of our fans and use our home ice. We have to find a way to force a Game 6." Sharp leads the Blackhawks with 10 points in nine games, but he has just one assist in Chicago's last three contests. The Blackhawks offense has gone cold and Sharp will be one of the players that has the potential to get them out of this funk.
Crawford: 'Everyone's a little pissed off' | 05/24/2013 9:34 AM
News
Corey Crawford admitted that when it comes to the Blackhawks "everyone's a little pissed off."
Chicago Tribune

Impact
Chicago has now lost three straight games to Detroit after taking their second-round opener. "I thought we played well again. It just seems like we can't get bounces," Crawford said of their 2-0 loss on Thursday. Crawford can't really be faulted for their latest loss after stopping 25 of 26 shots. With that in mind, it would be shocking if Ray Emery started on Saturday.
Torts defends decision to bench Brad Richards | 05/24/2013 9:30 AM
News
New York Rangers coach vehemently defended his decision to scratch a healthy Brad Richards before Thursday's Game 4.
New York Daily News

Impact
"This is a Conn Smythe winner, a guy I've grown up with, a guy that I love as a person and a player, but I have to make that decision regarding this. So kiss my ass if you want to run something different. It's not about blaming that guy, and I don't want anyone to pile on," Tortorella said after New York's 4-3 overtime win. Torts also called Richards "a hell of a hockey player" and said he had to make the decision because keeping the struggling Richards on the fourth line doesn't help either party, which we kind of agree with. It remains to be seen if Richards will be back in the lineup for Saturday's Game 5.
Toews: 'Eventually, something's got to give' | 05/24/2013 9:30 AM
News
Jonathan Toews still has faith that things are going to work out for Chicago.
CSN Chicago

Impact
They suffered a 2-0 loss on Thursday and are now trailing Detroit 3-1 in their second-round series. "We played our tails off. We did a lot of good things. We just didn't find the back of the net. Eventually, something's got to give," Toews said. "We're too good a team, we've got too much talent. For as hard as we're working, something's got to go our way." Obviously, the Blackhawks can't afford to wait for "eventually" any more. Toews will be one of the more interesting players to watch in Game 5. He had no goals and just three points in nine playoff games and was charged with three minor penalties on Thursday.
Brian Boyle snaps Rangers' power-play drought | 05/24/2013 9:28 AM
News
Brian Boyle's goal 10 minutes into the third period Wednesday night ended the New York Rangers' 0-for-12 drought on the power play.
New York Daily News

Impact
That number doesn't even really begin to describe it. Prior to Boyle's goal, the Rangers were an abysmal 2-for-39 with the man advantage this postseason. Not only didn't Boyle's goal end finally make an opponent pay for putting the Rangers on the power play, but it stood up as the tying goal and eventually sent the game into overtime, where Chris Kreider won it to force Game 5 in Boston on Saturday.
Anemic PP one of Hawks mounting problems | 05/24/2013 9:26 AM
News
The Chicago Blackhawks power play was anemic in their 2-0 loss to Detroit on Thursday.
CSN Chicago

Impact
Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville wasn't sure if it cost them any momentum, but he admitted that they certainly could have used the boost. The Blackhawks have a mediocre at best 12.0 power-play percentage in the postseason. Teams have overcome worse power-play success rates, but the Hawks certainly need to take advantage of any opportunities they get now that they're down 3-1 in their second-round series.
Hartley thinks Avs made right call with Roy | 05/24/2013 9:20 AM
News
Calgary Flames bench boss Bob Hartley thinks Patrick Roy will be a great head coach for the Colorado Avalanche.
Calgary Sun

Impact
Hartley was Roy's coach in Colorado when the team won the Stanley Cup in 2000-01. "Patrick is a relentless worker. He's passionate. He wants to win," Hartley said. "He's one of the most fiery guys that I've coached. When you talk about passion and when you talk about fire in his eyes, there's nobody that comes very close to Patrick. Practices, games, everywhere . Patrick would always be right at the top. I've never seen Patrick take an easy day when I was around him. He's a very proud man, a very proud athlete, and that's what made him special." Hartley added that he's remained closer to Roy than any of his other former players. The first game between the Flames and Avalanche in 2013-14 should be fun to watch.
Carl Hagelin's ugly goal sparks Rangers' O | 05/24/2013 9:10 AM
News
Carl Hagelin's deflected back-handed goal got the Rangers on the board Thursday night and helped spark the offense the rest of the night.
New York Daily News

Impact
Although Henrik Lundqvist called it "probably the ugliest goal I've ever seen," there's no denying the impact it had on the psyche of a Rangers team that was down 2-0 in the game and 3-0 in the series. "Carl's goal gave us life," said Derek Stepan, whose goal 1:15 into the third period tied the game at 2-2. The Rangers eventually won 4-3 in overtime to force Game 5 in Boston on Saturday night.
Torey Krug says playoff hockey feels natural | 05/24/2013 8:38 AM
News
Torey Krug said playoff hockey feels natural and he's "really comfortable" in the Bruins locker room despite being a rookie.
Boston Herald

Impact
The undersized defender scored yet another goal in Thursday's 4-3 overtime loss. It was an absolute laser from the point that was ticketed for just over Henrik Lundqvist's outstretched glove hand. Krug has been a revelation for Boston since joining the lineup due to injuries at the end of the Bruins series. "It's crazy to think about, but it feels pretty natural right now and I'm very comfortable in this locker room, really comfortable coming out and playing in these games now," Krug said.
Hamilton takes blame for Rangers' OT winner | 05/24/2013 8:28 AM
News
Dougie Hamilton said he feels like his let the Bruins down on the Rangers' game-winning goal in overtime Thursday night.
Boston Globe

Impact
Hamilton tried to stay with Rangers forward Chris Kreider, who got in front of Hamilton just enough to get a clean deflection on Rick Nash's hard pass. While the rookie blueliner might be kicking himself, it's hard to blame him on this one. Yes, he maybe could have taken a better angle on the play but Kreider's speed is one of his best attributes and one of the main reasons he took the NHL by storm last postseason. The Bruins need Hamilton to shake this one off and not carry it with him into Saturday's Game 5.
Tuukka Rask says he needs to be more focused | 05/24/2013 8:14 AM
News
Tuukka Rask says he needs to be more focused in Saturday's Game 5.
Boston Globe

Impact
Rask allowed four goals in Thursday's overtime loss, including when he lost his balance and allowed a flubbed, bouncing puck to slide over his stick and into the net. "I just took a step to the side in what I think probably was a skate mark or something. I lost my balance and the rest is history," Rask said after the 4-3 overtime loss. "We gave them a couple of gifts and it cost us the game."
Claude Julien doesn't think Bruins will panic | 05/24/2013 8:11 AM
News
Boston Bruins coach Claude Julien said "there's no panic" in the team's locker room after Thursdays' 4-3 overtime loss to the New York Rangers in Game 4.
Boston Globe

Impact
The Bruins were up 3-0 in the series entering the game and twice led by a goal in the third period. Still, the Bruins often looked like the better team and it took one of the strangest, flukiest goals we've ever seen to get the Rangers going in the second period. Returning home and with the memory of Toronto's first-round rally in their minds, we expect the Bruins to be 100 percent focused on ending the series Saturday night.
G Antti Niemi strong but Sharks fail to score | 05/24/2013 1:43 AM
News
San Jose goaltender Antti Niemi played well Thursday night but his teammates couldn't get a puck past Los Angeles goaltender Jonathan Quick and the Kings ended up with a 3-0 shutout over the Sharks.
Rotoworld.com

Impact
It was the Kings' 13th consecutive home victory and it also gave them a 3-2 lead over San Jose in their best-of-seven playoff series. Niemi stopped 26 of the Kings' 28 shots Thursday and held them goalless until 18:08 of the second period. An early third-period goal and an empty-netter sealed the deal for the defending-champion Kings and leaves the Sharks needing two wins -- the next one in San Jose and then a Game 7 in Los Angeles -- to advance.
Kings' Anze Kopitar score second playoff goal | 05/24/2013 1:36 AM
News
Anze Kopitar, who had only one goal in his previous 26 games, broke a goalless game late in the second period for the Los Angeles Kings Thursday night, and it turned out to be the winner in a 3-0 playoff triumph over the San Jose Sharks.
Rotoworld.com

Impact
Kopitar's second playoff goal came at 18:08 of the second period. Kopitar, generally recognized as the Kings' most talented offensive player, had complained earlier during this series that his team needed to take more shots at San Jose goalie Antti Niemi; the Kings wound up with 28 in the Thursday win. Slava Voynov pitched in with his fourth playoff goal on a power play early in the third period and Jeff Carter notched his fifth playoff goal in the Sharks' empty net late in the third. It was the Kings' 13th consecutive home victory.
G Jonathan Quick records shutout over Sharks | 05/24/2013 1:26 AM
News
Jonathan Quick of the Los Angeles Kings turned aside every shot the San Jose Sharks directed at him Thursday night en route to a 3-0 shutout.
Rotoworld.com

Impact
The victory gave the defending-champion Kings a 3-2 lead in their best-of-seven playoff series against San Jose. The Sharks took 24 shots on goal but Quick was sharp and the Kings never were in danger of losing this game on their home ice, where they now have won 13 consecutive games, dating back to March.
Jonathan Toews continues to struggle | 05/23/2013 11:16 PM
News
Jonathan Toews was held off the scoresheet for the third straight game Thursday as the Blackhawks were shut out by Detroit by a score of 2-0.
Rotoworld.com

Impact
Toews did register three shots on goal and six penalty minutes in the game, but he has totalled only three points, all assists, in nine postseason games this spring. If the Blackhawks are going to come back from their current 3-1 hole in the series their captain will have to be a major contributor.
Corey Crawford solid in losing effort | 05/23/2013 11:07 PM
News
Corey Crawford turned away 25 of 26 shots Thursday, but was saddled with a loss in a 2-0 defeat at the hands of the Red Wings.
Rotoworld.com

Impact
This result was far from being Crawford's fault, but given the three-game slide the Blackhawks are currently suffering through there's a chance we could see Ray Emery between the pipes for Game Five Saturday.
Jakub Kindl scores winner in Game 4 | 05/23/2013 11:03 PM
News
Jakub Kindl scored his first goal of the postseason Thursday as Detroit upended the Blackhawks by a score of 2-0 to take a 3-1 lead in their second round playoff series.
Rotoworld.com

Impact
Kindl's goal midway through the second period was assisted by Carlo Colaiacovo and Johan Franzen and held up as the only tally of the contest until Dan Cleary's empty-net marker in the game's final minute iced the victory for Detroit.
Jimmy Howard shuts out Hawks to win Game 4 | 05/23/2013 10:56 PM
News
Jimmy Howard stopped all 28 shots he faced in the Red Wings' 2-0 win over Chicago Thursday night.
Rotoworld.com

Impact
Howard was excellent in this game and thanks to his strong play, the Wings now hold a 3-1 advantage in their second round playoff series. The series shifts back to Chicago for Game Five Saturday.
Tuukka Rask outdueled by King Henrik | 05/23/2013 10:37 PM
News
Tuukka Rask allowed four goals on 32 shots in a 4-3 overtime loss to the New York Rangers Thursday night.
Rotoworld.com

Impact
Rask has enjoyed a strong second round series so he can be forgiven for one subpar outing. He actually wasn't terrible in this contest outside of the Rangers first goal, on which Rask lost his balance and allowed Carl Hagelin to slide the puck into a near-empty net. He'll get his chance to bounce back in Game Five in Boston on Saturday evening.
Tyler Seguin finally scores in loss to NYR | 05/23/2013 10:16 PM
News
Tyler Seguin scored his first goal of the playoffs and added an assist Thursday, however the Bruins dropped a 4-3 overtime decision at Madison Square Garden.
Rotoworld.com

Impact
The goal was the first in 11 postseason contests for Seguin and his first in 16 games dating back to the regular season. Nathan Horton also registered a goal and an assist in the loss while Torey Krug posted his third tally of the playoffs.
Henrik Lundqvist tands tall as Rangers win | 05/23/2013 10:12 PM
News
Henrik Lundqvist was sharp Thursday as he turned away 37 of 40 shots in a 4-3 overtime win over Boston.
Rotoworld.com

Impact
The game went back and forth a few times, especially in the third period, however King Henrik made the important saves he needed to when it counted. The Rangers are still in tough as they have three more games to win in order to complete the series comeback.

Rotoworld.com

Impact
The win keeps the Blueshirts alive despite now trailing 3-1 in their second round playoff series. Derek Stepan picked up a goal and an assist in the victory while Brian Boyle and Carl Hagelin also found the back of the net. Derick Brassard contributed to the cause with a pair of assists in the win.
Report: Coyotes GM Maloney close to extension | 05/23/2013 8:41 PM
News
Coyotes general manager Don Maloney is close to finishing a new contract extension, according to Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic/Phoenix Gazette.
Arizona Republic/Phoenix Gazette

Impact
Maloney's current deal expires this offseason but he and the NHL, which owns the team, are nearly done with a new one. Maloney has been the Coyotes' general manager since 2007, helping guide the team to three playoff berths in the last four years without an owner. McLellan says there's no word on when exactly the two sides want to get this done by. Coach Dave Tippett also has a contract that expires this summer.
Chris Kreider starts on NYR's second line | 05/23/2013 7:11 PM
News
Chris Kreider is starting Game 4 of the second-round series on the Rangers' second line.
Jim Cerny on Twitter

Impact
The key word here is "starting" because coach John Tortorella is a notorious line-juggler. For now, though, he has a chance to play with Derrick Brassard and Rick Nash on the line he played on before leaving Game 3 after getting hit in the forehead with a stick.
Haley and Newbury will play in Game 4 | 05/23/2013 6:44 PM

No Asham, Clowe, Staal or Stralman at warmup | 05/23/2013 6:42 PM
News
Arron Asham and Ryane Clowe weren't on the ice for New York's pregame warmup.
Andrew Gross on Twitter

Impact
It wasn't clear if Asham and Clowe would be in the lineup Thursday for Game 4 following a question-filled morning skate, but now it looks like they won't suit up. Marc Staal and Anton Stralman shouldn't be expected to play either after they didn't come out for the warmup as well.
Vlasic, Braun have gotten the job done | 05/23/2013 5:50 PM
News
Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Justin Braun have done an excellent job shutting down Los Angeles' top line in the Sharks' second-round series.
San Jose Mercury News

Impact
Anze Kopitar has managed to produce only one power-play assist in the first four games of the series. In the opening round of the postseason, the duo of Vlasic and Braun held Daniel and Henrik Sedin of the Vancouver Canucks to just one assist each at even strength. "They feel very comfortable playing with each other and they complement each other well," coach Todd McLellan said. "They're both very good skaters with tremendous stamina so when they get caught out there long, they're able to maintain their composure and get the job done." The Kings may shuffle their lines going into Game 5 to avoid the match-up.
Jarret Stoll still hasn't resumed skating | 05/23/2013 5:24 PM
News
Jarret Stoll has not resumed skating since suffering an upper-body injury in Game 1 against San Jose, but he has been doing some off-ice workouts.
LAKingsInsider.com

Impact
"He rode yesterday, rode the bike for a few minutes, and you've got to watch heart rate," coach Darryl Sutter said Thursday. "Then he'll do that again today. It is that protocol. So is that progress? It is if it's good today. He's out at the practice rink this morning. [Reporter: But he's not skating?] No. He's not skating." TSN's Darren Dreger has reported that Stoll suffered head and shoulder injuries after being hit by Raffi Torres.

Impact
Leier, who was a fourth-round pick of the Philadelphia Flyers in 2012, lay motionless on the ice before being helped off and there was no penalty called on the play. He is suffering from concussion-like symptoms. Thrower was chosen in the second round of 2012 draft by the Montreal Canadiens.

News
Patrick Roy has been named the new head coach and vice president of hockey operations of the Colorado Avalanche.
Denver Post

The club tweeted on Thursday that the two sides have "reached an agreement in principle" and it's expected that the official news conference will be next week because of the holiday weekend. "This is an unbelievable day for me," said Roy, who has spent the last eight seasons serving as the coach and GM of the Quebec Remparts in the QMJHL. "It's a new and exciting challenge that I am really looking forward to. I would like to thank Stan and Josh Kroenke for this opportunity as well as Joe Sakic for the trust they are putting in me. Almost 10 years to the day that I announced my retirement as a player I am back in Denver and hope the fans are as excited as I am."
Alfredsson still believes in his teammates | 05/23/2013 4:27 PM
News
Daniel Alfredsson feels his comment about the Senators not being able to rally from a 3-1 series deficit against Pittsburgh was taken out of context.
Ottawa Sun

Impact
"Maybe I should have continued right away where I left off in my answer," he said. "I don't doubt for one second that we'll come out with a great effort (Friday night). It sounds like I had given up. If you ask anyone and they look at our series, I don't think there are too many people that would pick us right now. That's what I meant. We're still in the playoffs. It doesn't matter to me which way it's looked at. The guys in this room know enough about me. I believe in these guys ... I'm not going to change anything in how it's said. It's obvious to me that we're in tough." Anyone who said Alfredsson had given up went a little overboard, but he clearly understands that the Senators have their backs against the wall against a talented team.

Chris Kuc on Twitter

So I wouldn't be surprised to see him have a big game here tonight." Pittsburgh's Evgeni Malkin predicted that James Neal would break out of his slump "soon," going into Wednesday's contest and Neal responded with two goals and one assist. The Blackhawks would be more than thankful if Toews had a night like that.

News

The Bergen Record

Impact
Brad Richards has already been scratched and Arron Asham is uncertain to play, so Newbury and/or Haley could be playing in Game 4. Coach John Tortorella wouldn't talk about his lineup for the contest. Newbury dressed in Game 1 versus Washington in the opening round, but hasn't played since, while Haley has never played in an NHL playoff game before and he suited up in just nine games with the Rangers during the regular season.
Rangers probably won't have Clowe in Gm 4 | 05/23/2013 3:23 PM
News
Ryane Clowe participated in the morning skate, but if he is fact out with a concussion then it would be hard to see him play in Game 4 Thursday night.
The Bergen Record

Impact
He hasn't played since Game 5 of the first round with a possible concussion. Clowe hasn't resumed full contact and he hasn't skated in a full practice with his teammates, so he should be considered doubtful to return Thursday.

"The last two days have been better so we'll go from there. It's worse to sit and watch than it is to deal with the eye." He didn't say if he would play in Game 4 Thursday, but it's unlikely that he does.

News
Anton Stralman (undisclosed) didn't skate Thursday morning.
The Bergen Record

Impact
He isn't likely to play in Game 4 and the Rangers will probably turn to Roman Hamrlik to take his place. Stralman doesn't have a point in 10 playoff contests, but he does have 16 hits and 21 blocks. His absence cuts into the depth of New York's back end, which means more ice time for Daniel Girardi and Ryan McDonagh.
Roman Hamrlik likely to play Thursday | 05/23/2013 1:57 PM
News
Roman Hamrlik appears to be the top candidate to fill in on the blueline for injured defender Anton Stralman.

News
Brad Richards will be a healthy scratch Thursday night when the Rangers face elimination from the playoffs in Game 4.
The Bergen Record

Impact
"I'm surprised, I guess," said Richards, who was told about the decision by coach John Tortorella this morning. "I'm disappointed." He has played most of the playoffs on the fourth line and has one goal, along with a minus-3 rating, in 10 games. Richards was given just 8:10 of ice time in Game 3. He is still owed $36 million through 2020, but this decision has led to plenty of speculation about his future with the organization. The Rangers may decide to use an amnesty buyout on Richards in the off-season, but for now he'll have to watch his teammate try to stay alive against Boston.

News

After a sluggish start to the lockout-shortened season, he emerged as a top-tier player again while recording 32 goals and 56 points in 48 games.

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Impact

That's the challenge." Going into Game 4, he flirted with nearly a 60 percent winning percentage in three straight contests. On Wednesday though, he won just 44.44 percent of his draws. Sutter has two points in 10 postseason contests.

Vitale not playing because of faceoff work | 05/23/2013 12:22 PM
News
Joe Vitale didn't play Sunday or Wednesday because of his lack of success on faceoffs and not because of a "health thing."
Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

Impact
Vitale said Wednesday he had "a hiccup" to a previous lower-body injury, but that's not the reason why he's currently watching his teammates from the press box. Coach Dan Bylsma has not been pleased with Vitale's work in the faceoff circle in Round 2, as he won only 9 of 21 draws in Games 1 and 2.

He believes the team will try their hardest in Game 5 Friday night back in Pittsburgh, but he was clearly dejected by Wednesday's 7-3 defeat. Alfredsson has generated two goals and two assists in his past three games and he'll need to shoulder the load again if Ottawa is going to extend their playoff run.

David Leggio may leave Sabres as a UFA | 05/23/2013 10:49 AM
News
David Leggio is slated for unrestricted free agency this summer.
Buffalo News

Impact
He was Rochester's MVP after earning a 38-24-1 record with a 2.56 GAA and a .924 save percentage in the AHL with Buffalo's minor-league affiliate. However, he may not be back with the Sabres' organization next year. "David is obviously a very good goaltender," Buffalo GM Darcy Regier said. "He's going to be unrestricted. He is going to have some freedom, some rights, and we're going to sit down and talk about the goaltending situation because with the addition of Matt Hackett and even Connor Knapp and Nathan Lieuwen, we've got some decisions to make." If he's brought back and Ryan Miller gets traded then he could find himself in a battle for a backup role on the big club, but there are several factors that would have to fall into place for that scenario to happen.

News

Pro Hockey Talk

Impact
Cherry argued that the fault lies with Gillis for his roster decisions. Specifically moves like keeping Roberto Luongo and thus setting the stage for a goaltending controversy. If the Canucks suffer another fast playoff exit in 2013-14, then Gillis might end up getting fired as well.

Buffalo News

Impact
"I've been growing a lot," said Enroth after backstopping Sweden to a gold medal at the IIHF World Championships. "I want to play more. My goal is to be a starter one year in the NHL, and right now Ryan is the starter here. It's kind of hard to take the job from him here, but we'll see what happens." During the tournament, he posted a 5-2-1 record with a 1.15 goals-against average and a .956 save percentage. Enroth will need to be much more consistent than he's been in the past if he wants to be an NHL starter, but is making positive steps forward.

News
Jarret Stoll (undisclosed) isn't expected to return on Thursday.
CSN Bay Area

Impact
Stoll has been sidelined with what's likely a head injury after being hit by Raffi Torres. Torres was suspended for his actions. "He's obviously a very good player," Sharks coach Todd McLellan said of Stoll. "The suspension that Raffi had imposed on him also affects us, so we both lost valuable players in this series. Both teams have players that are playing banged up, and the positive thing for both teams is that no one is really making excuses. Whoever you put out there has to play. That's the way it's got to be."
Sharks don't count on momentum from Game 4 | 05/23/2013 10:38 AM
News
The San Jose Sharks aren't relying on any momentum to carry forward from their wins in Game 3 and 4.
San Jose Mercury News

Impact
"You need to re-establish momentum on a nightly basis," Sharks coach Todd McLellan said. "I'm a real believer in that." So far the home team has won every game of this series, which isn't surprising given that the Sharks and Kings have been two of the best home teams in the NHL this year. Still, San Jose needs to prove they can win at Staples Center in order to advance past the second round.
Rask provides B's with steady goaltending | 05/23/2013 10:33 AM
News
Tuukka Rask isn't bothered that his play isn't being trumpeted from the rooftops in some circles.
Boston Herald

Impact
"I don't care," he said Wednesday. "I know that people are saying our defensive system helps me out and stuff like that. And most of the time I'm in the right position and the saves look easy. I like it that way." After 10 games, Rask's pace is similar to the numbers that Tim Thomas ended up with during Boston's run to the Stanley Cup in 2011. Rask currently has a .930 save percentage and a 2.19 GAA and he has been a difference maker at key times during the playoffs. He hasn't give up much against the Rangers in Round 2 and continues to build his case to earn a lucrative contract extension in the off-season.

Impact
"There's a chance for sure," he said after the skate. "But you don't want to come back too early. We'll see how it feels [Thursday] and go from there." There is also the possibility that the Bruins may hold him out of the lineup for Game 4 because the team's defense has performed so well against the Rangers in the series.
Kyle Clifford skates on Kings' top line | 05/23/2013 10:12 AM
News
Kyle Clifford skated with Anze Kopitar and Justin Williams during Wednesday's practice.
LAKingsInsider.com

Impact
If the Kings go with those lines on Thursday, then this would be a big opportunity for Clifford. The Kings top line has been struggling in the postseason, so perhaps this change will provide them with a spark. That being said, Clifford isn't an known for his scoring abilities, but Williams sees the benefit of him being on their line. "We're obviously starved for goals, and there's a reason for that. Not enough net pressure, not enough traffic, not enough rebounds, not enough going to the net with a purpose. Kyle brings all of those, and if we are to play together tomorrow, we're going to need to do that to get results," Williams said on Wednesday.
Dustin Brown is bumped off top line | 05/23/2013 10:09 AM

Rangers will try to survive 1 game at a time | 05/23/2013 10:02 AM
News

Boston Globe

Impact
"We're not looking at odds or anything like that," said Callahan whose team trails the Bruins in the series 3-0. "We're looking at one game at home, and we'll try to bring this thing back to Boston. That's the only way we can look at it, to try to win one game in our building." Three teams have recovered from this type of deficit before to win an NHL series and Boston was the latest victim of that circumstance in 2010 against Philadelphia.
Faceoffs have been a big boost for Detroit | 05/23/2013 10:00 AM
News
The Detroit Red Wings have won more faceoffs than the Chicago Blackhawks in every game of their second-round series.
Detroit News

Impact
That's certainly been a boost for Detroit and played a role in them taking a 2-1 series lead. "It's definitely a factor," Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville admitted. "We've got to get better in that area. It's definitely an area that is a point of emphasis moving forward. All (zones are) critical, special teams, PK (penalty kill), offensive . We've given up a couple of goals the last two games (because of lost faceoffs)." Overall, the Red Wings have a 52.6% success rate on the draw in the playoffs, but they've won 54.6% of their faceoffs in the second round.
Howard: Underestimating Wings is nothing new | 05/23/2013 9:56 AM
News
Jimmy Howard argued that people underestimating the Detroit Red Wings is nothing new.
Detroit News

Impact
"A lot of people have counted us out for many years, saying our leadership is getting too old," Howard said. "And those guys just go out and prove the naysayers wrong. A lot of people picked the 'Hawks to sweep us, and we're playing great hockey against them now. We just gotta keep it up." The Detroit Red Wings didn't make it past the second round in each of their previous three playoff runs, so they didn't exactly defy expectations. At the same time, the Red Wings were seen as a team in transition in 2013 and were expected to regress. They just barely made the playoffs, but the fact that they might even go further than any Detroit team since 2009 is impressive.
Jets watch Jacob Trouba closely at WHC | 05/23/2013 9:48 AM
News
Winnipeg GM Kevin Cheveldayoff and assistant GM Craig Heisinger spent most of their time at the IIHF World Champioship eyeballing 2012 first-round pick Jacob Trouba.
Winnipeg Free Press

Impact
"We saw him play in a lot of different situations with eight defensemen in the lineup any given night. Jacob played on the first power play in all the games that we watched," Cheveldayoff said. "He was given a lot of responsibility in that regard. He has a very good slapshot. The team was looking for some chemistry in some areas and found it. I think their power play was pretty good and from that standpoint, it was pretty good to see Jacob be a part of it. Not having played for an extended period of time or ever at the men's level, I think there was a good transition period for him. It looked like he was more comfortable every time he played. He's had a wonderful opportunity given to him and he took full advantage of it." It sounds like the team's brass is impressed with the 19-year-old's play and he's definitely a player to watch going into training camp.

"(Now) I'm not going to take anything for granted, I got a taste of what it is to be (in the NHL) and that's my main goal this summer . that they're going to have to keep me," he said. Chiasson had six goals and seven points in his seven NHL games, so he's certainly worth keeping a close eye on during the Stars' training camp.
Sergei Bobrovsky's contract talks have slowed | 05/23/2013 9:44 AM
News
Sergei Bobrovsky's contract talks with the Columbus Blue Jackets have gone quiet.
Columbus Dispatch

Impact
"We've talked. We've exchanged ideas," Blue Jackets GM Jarmo Kekalainen said. "But we haven't made any progress, really. It's been pretty quiet for a while now." Bobrovsky can become a restricted free agent this summer if the Blue Jackets don't re-sign him. That would allow the goaltender to ink an offer sheet, but Kekalainen said that the team is prepared to match an offer sheet if it comes to that.

Jokinen had a disappointing first year with the Jets after he was brought in with the hope of anchoring the team's top line. He notched seven goals and seven assists, while picking up a minus-19 rating, in 45 games.

The Vancouver Canucks' decision to fire Alain Vigneault could impact the Colorado Avalanche's search for a new coach.
