Panthers winger Jussi Jokinen is playing alongside fellow Finn Aleksander Barkov in training camp.

Impact
As excited as we are about the 19-year-old Aleksander Barkov, Jokinen will not be as productive this year as he was a season ago while playing with Penguins star Evgeni Malkin. Last season, Jokinen scored 21 goals, most since 2009-2010, and 36 assists, most since 2005-2006. Expect more like 15 goals and 25-30 assists this year. Jokinen saw top-six minutes for the Penguins last season and finished with 21 goals and 57 points, both his most since 2009-10. However, he'll go from having Evgeni Malkin as his center to 21-year-old Nick Bjugstad, 18-year-old Aleksander Barkov or fellow free agent signee Dave Bolland.

Barkov is just 19 years old and how productive he is will depend greatly on how much the Panthers can improve under new head coach Gerald Gallant. Barkov will be the top-line center.
Panthers have high hopes for MacKenzie Weegar | 07/20/2014 11:10 AM
News
Florida general manager Dale Tallon sees offensive defenseman MacKenzie Weegar running the Panthers' power play sooner or later.
Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel

Impact
Weegar scored 103 points in 123 games in his two seasons with the Halifax Mooseheads of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. Although Weegar has made strides, recent events suggest he might have to wait a while to become part of the Panthers' plans. The team re-signed Dmitry Kulikov and Dylan Olsen recently. Erik Gudbranson was just given a two-year deal while veterans such as Brian Campbell and the recently acquired Willie Mitchell are expected to lead the group. Once No. 1 pick Aaron Ekblad is signed, the Panthers could conceivably have their six defensemen wrapped up before training camp starts in a few months. "I think I was a little bit more positionally sound," said Weegar, 20, who was the Panthers' last pick in the 2013 NHL Draft. "There are still a lot more things to improve on. I haven't skated much this summer. We still have a few more months left before the big camp and I'll show up better."

"It's on him to decide, for him to make the decisions really hard on the coaches in September and October." Grimaldi had 17 goals and 39 points in 42 NCAA games last season. He was taken by Florida with the 33rd overall pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.
Tallon isn't promising Ekblad a roster spot | 07/08/2014 9:38 PM
News
Florida Panthers GM Dale Tallon isn't guaranteeing Aaron Ekblad a spot on the team's opening game roster after selecting him with the first overall pick in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft.
Miami Herald

Impact
"We'll have a good, long look at him at training camp," Tallon said. "If he's ready, he's ready. If not, well, [Jonathan] Huberdeau went back. Guys come back better players." Huberdeau was taken with the third overall pick in 2011 and went on to win the Calder Trophy in 2013. Ekblad might not have much fantasy value in 2014-15, but we do think he'll at least make the team's opening game roster.

Florida Panthers GM Dale Tallon is very happy with how July 1 went for his team.
Miami Herald

Impact
The Panthers added defenseman Willie Mitchell, goaltender Al Montoya, and forwards David Bolland, Jussi Jokinen, Derek MacKenzie, and Shawn Thornton. "It was a great day for our franchise, and we exceeded expectations," Tallon said. Jokinen and Bolland in particular were expensive additions, but the Panthers still have plenty of cap space remaining.

News
The Florida Panthers have signed Willie Mitchell.
Aaron Ward on Twitter

Impact
It's a two-year deal worth $8.5 million. Mitchell doesn't do enough offensively to make him noteworthy in standard fantasy leagues, but he's a top-four defenseman that will bring a wealth of playoff experience to the Florida Panthers.
Derek MacKenzie signs on with Florida | 07/01/2014 2:01 PM
News

News

Impact
Jokinen got a second chance with Pittsburgh after Carolina soured on him and he made the most of it. He had 21 goals and 57 points in 81 games in 2013-14. He should get top-six minutes in Florida and is a fair bet to surpass the 50-point mark again next season.
Panthers will be aggressive in UFA market | 07/01/2014 10:04 AM
News
The Florida Panthers could prove to be one of the major players during the unrestricted free agent period.
Miami Herald

Impact
Panthers GM Dale Tallon vowed to be aggressive in his pursuit of UFAs and he has the cap space to make a big splash. The only question is if he'll be able to convince free agents that they'd have a chance to win the Stanley Cup with Florida. That's a tough sell given the Panthers' lackluster history.

Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel

Impact
"Anything can change but they honored their promise and it means a lot to me," said Hawryluk. "It's a dream come true, you work your whole life to come to this moment. To hear your name called out, it's hard to explain, a lot of emotions right now, pretty jittery." He led the Brandon Wheat Kings in scoring with 64 points in 59 games this past season. He's expected to be back in the WHL next year.

The Florida Panthers grabbed Jace Hawryluk with the 32nd overall pick in the 2014 draft.
Rotoworld.com

Impact
NHL Central Scouting's B.J. MacDonald describes Hawryluk as "spunky" with "a good work ethic." MacDonald says that Hawrluk plays big and with a lot of grit despite his 5-foot-10, 190-pound frame. He also has "decent hands and good instincts, and definitely had a tremendous second half" to his OHL season with Brandon.
Jovanovksi is a candidate for a buyout | 06/28/2014 10:21 AM
News
There is still a chance that 38-year-old defenseman Ed Jovanovksi's contract could be bought out by the Panthers.
Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel

Impact
The veteran rearguard made a courageous comeback from a serious hip injury last season but there may not be any room for him on the Florida blueline should Aaron Ekblad make the Panthers out of training camp. Jovocop has one year left on his deal and would like to return. For now, GM Dale Tallon stated that nothing has changed in regard to Jovanovski's status. Stay tuned.
Ekblad believes he's ready for the NHL | 06/28/2014 10:11 AM
News
Aaron Ekblad, the first overall pick in the 2014 NHL entry draft, believes he is ready to play in the NHL right now.
Miami Herald

Impact
Well the Panthers, who did not trade the first pick despite the fact they had numerous offers, sure hope he is. For his part, Ekblad does not lack confidence. "I can step into the NHL next year," he said. On being the first defenseman to go first overall in the draft since Erik Johnson in 2006 Ekblad said the following: "That is the burden of expectation. I chase it. I want that burden of expectation. I want that feel for motivation and I want to succeed under that." He may not be a significant fantasy asset in 2014-15, but Ekblad should be a strong two-way defenseman who will anchor a power play and register 40-50 points per season once he matures. He is worth investing in. Read more here: http://www.miamiherald.com/2014/06/28/4207133/panthers-take-ekblad-with-no-1.html#storylink=cpy

News
The Florida Panthers have taken Aaron Ekblad with the first overall pick in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft.
Rotoworld.com

Impact
Ekblad is a confident player who has NHL size, toughness, skating ability and the smarts to play in the NHL next year, and eventually become a top-pair stalwart. He is an excellent two-way blueliner, with a three-zone game and a balance between his offensive and defensive game. Ekblad is skilled with the puck, his shot is heavy and accurate and he possesses great vision and poise. He complements his offensive game well with ruggedness, an active stick and solid positioning on the defensive side. He is very hard on himself and could stand to be more physically assertive at the next level. In 2013-14, Barrie's captain was named the OHL's most outstanding defenseman, leading all rearguards with 23 goals and finishing finishing tied for fifth with 53 points. There was a lot of speculation that the Panthers might deal this pick, but in Ekblad they're getting a player that will make an immediate impact in the NHL.

News
Florida Panthers GM Dale Tallon thinks there's a "70 percent" chance he'll end up keeping the first overall pick.
Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel

Impact
The Panthers have been open about their interest in trading the selection, but they haven't pulled the trigger yet despite receiving offers that have been "over and above probably what we imagined we'd get for the pick." Perhaps Tallon is simply holding out to see if he can get a little more before the draft. We'll know for sure soon enough.

Panthers GM ready to make some moves | 06/24/2014 10:24 AM
News
Florida GM Dale Tallon is looking for established players to improve his roster.
Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel

Impact
"Maybe it's time to package some of our youth in a deal," he said. "We have 12 kids over 6-3 who are under 23 in our system. So we have enough youth now that it won't affect the future. We have 10 picks next year. We have the No. 1 and No. 32 pick this year."

Impact
Huberdeau played for the Saint Jon Sea Dogs when Gallant was coaching that team. "It's good to be reunited with him, and I think things are going to be good with him here," said Huberdeau. "I'm excited for this. He's a guy who is intense and into the game. He keeps you up throughout the game. I think the guys are going to react to him. He wants what is best for the players." Panthers GM Dale Tallon is hoping that Gallant's prior success in the juniors will allow him to get the most out of Florida's young players.

Impact
Gallant was the bench boss of Huberdeau's QMJHL team, the Saint Jon Sea Dogs, for three seasons. Huberdeau was the captain of the squad in 2011-2012. Impact
At least that's according to Sportsnet's Doug MacLean, who said he had not doubt about Gallant's appointment. Reports have Gallant, who was an assistant coach with the Cats' AHL affiliate during the 1999-2000 season, being named as Florida's bench boss in a news conference Monday. Gallant served as the Canadiens' assistant coach this past season and has been a head coach in the NHL with the Blue Jackets.
Report: Brian Campbell wants to be traded | 06/18/2014 12:11 PM
News
Brian Campbell reportedly would like the Florida Panthers to trade him.
Andy Strickland on Twitter

Impact
Is there much of a market for Campbell though? He's certainly a valuable offensive defenseman and although he's 35 years old, he should still have some strong seasons ahead of him. However, he comes with a $7,142,875 annual cap hit through 2015-16 and that's likely to scare off teams that would otherwise be interested in the veteran puck-moving defenseman. The Panthers can make things easier by agreeing to retain part of his cap hit, but they might not be inclined to do so if they didn't want to move him in the first place.

Panthers significantly alter sales staff | 06/03/2014 9:34 AM
News
The Florida Panthers have reportedly fired 30 employees with the majority of those being from the team's sales staff.
Miami Herald

Impact
The Florida Panthers have been losing millions annually and ranked 29th in average attendance in 2013-14, so it's not surprising that the ownership wanted to shake things up. Still, the team's attendance isn't likely to get much better unless the on-ice product starts to improve. Florida has only made the playoffs once since 2000.
