News
Look for Justin Faulk to take on a bigger role for the Carolina Hurricanes next season.
Raleigh News & Observer

Impact
Faulk just turned 22 and was a valued member of the American Olympic squad this past season, so he should be expected to provide leadership in 2014-15 for the Hurricanes. "I think I've been put into a position where I need to step up and be more of a leader, whether it's more vocal or coming to the rink ready to work hard every day and show it that way," Faulk said. He had the best offensive season of his young career with five goals and 32 points in 76 games and look for that to increase next season if he remains healthy.

Raleigh News & Observer

Impact
Skinner has already played four seasons in the NHL and notched his second 30-plus goal season in 2013-14 as he found the back of the net 33 times to lead the Hurricanes. "I don't think it will be new or outside of my nature," Skinner said. "Everybody deals with that kind of thing in their own sort of way. I was a leader in junior (hockey) and I feel more comfortable every year I'm here. It's not something that you can set out and say you're going to do this. It's a little more abstract than that. For me, personally, it's something you grow into and something you earn as you go."

Cam Ward reflects on poor campaign | 04/16/2014 9:20 AM
News
Cam Ward had a terrible 2013-14 campaign.
Raleigh News & Observer

Impact
Ward was plagued by injuries and ended up with a 3.06 GAA and .898 save percentage in 30 games. "I struggled to get comfortable all season long," Ward said. "Obviously I got the injury, and coming back from that I felt like I was playing catchup. I wasn't able to get consecutive games to try and get my game going. Anton had a great season. I was never able to get into a rhythm." At this point, it wouldn't be surprising if Carolina's preference is to go into 2014-15 with Anton Khudobin as the team's starter. They might trade Ward if there's a team out there that will take his $6.3 million cap hit through 2015-16.

Raleigh News & Observer

"Too often it was like we were trying to score the perfect goal on the power play when we needed some dirty goals," GM Jim Rutherford said. Staal has only 19 goals and 59 points this season, his worst since he was a rookie. Look for a bounce back season in 2014-15 as Staal is only 29.

News
Hurricanes coach Kirk Muller thinks Jeff Skinner will develop into a 40-goal scorer.
Raleigh News & Observer

Impact
"I think he can, yeah," coach Kirk Muller said Saturday. "He's had a few stretches where he didn't have production and I think because he's young that affects guys who score goals. When you're not scoring, you evaluate your game that way, and I think through maturity you learn that when you don't score you work to keep the other things in your game. You just keep level-headed. When he does that and gets a little more consistent, he has the capability of scoring 40." Skinner has matched his career-high of 31 goals this season. It's worth noting that the 21-year-old has already run into some injury trouble and he'll probably need to have a nearly completely healthy season to reach the 40-goal milestone.

News
John-Michael Liles registered three points in the Hurricanes' 4-1 win over the Stars on Thursday night.
Rotoworld.com

Impact
A turn-back-the-block performance for Liles, who scored and had two helpers. He really found his way with the Maple Leafs and his game has certainly slipped in recent seasons, but he's an offensive-minded defensemen capable of putting together some solid games here and there. That being said, he has nine points in 36 games this season and isn't worth adding down the stretch. Justin Faulk had a goal and an assist, while Eric Staal and Riley Nash each lit the lamp as well. News
Alexander Semin missed Tuesday's contest because of an illness.
Raleigh News & Observer

Impact
Semin has 22 goals and 20 assists in 62 games this season. That makes this one of his worst seasons and certainly not worthy of the five-year, $35 million contract he inked. The silver lining is that Semin has improved significantly since his dreadful start to the season and we consequently think he will bounce back in 2014-15.
