NewsDerrick Pouliot (shoulder) hopes to be ready to play before the end of training camp.
ImpactPouliot original timeline suggested that he would be ready to return in late September at the earliest and could end up missing most of November, so his current target will be challenging to meet. He admitted that at this stage, it's still tough to predict when he'll be back, but so far he feels upbeat about his recovery.

ImpactPouliot was drafted eighth overall in the 2012 Draft and was voted the top defenseman in the WHL this season after a 17 goal and 70 point performance. He was injured in the WHL final against the Edmonton Oil Kings last week and rather than go to the Pens farm team in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, he came to Pittsburgh to have the Penguins medical staff look him over.
D Olli Maatta wants D Derrick Pouliot around | 03/13/2014 10:29 AM
NewsThe Penguins' front office is extremely high on prospect Derrick Pouliot and refused to trade him for established players before the NHL's trade deadline last week.
ImpactAmong those turned down by the Flyers for Pouliot, according to reports, was Vancouver forward Ryan Kesler. What a defense pair Pouliot could potentially give the Pens with Olli Maatta. And Maatta can't wait for that to happen. No members of his developmental staff, though, offered a better ringing endorsement of the Penguins' first first-round pick at the 2012 NHL Entry Draft than their second first-round pick that year. "I just know how good of a guy (Pouliot) is off the ice," Maatta said. "So, yeah, I'd like to have him here. He has some unbelievable skill. I saw it when we played against one another in junior hockey and at training camp.I can learn from him. I think we can help each other." Maatta, 19 and the No. 22 pick two years ago, has emerged as a Calder Trophy (top rookie) candidate. Pouliot, 20 and the No. 8 pick from 2012, is the Pens' "top prospect not in the NHL," said Tom Fitzgerald, Pittsburgh's assistant general manager.

ImpactHe scored on a power play in the first period, moving in from the right point and taking a nice cross-zone feed from Chris Kunitz. He also killed penalties against Chicago, a task he took on to a greater extent last year in junior hockey. Pouliot piled up 45 points in 44 games last season with Portland in the Western Hockey League. "Like everyone else here," he said, "I'm pushing for a spot here in training camp. If not, I want it to be a hard decision for the coaches."
Penguins impressed by defense prospects | 07/02/2013 8:50 AM
NewsPittsburgh prospects Derrick Pouliot and Olli Maatta aren't expected to challenge for a roster spot next season, but they are viewed as important pieces of the team's future.
Impact"We really like how Pouliot can work the power play," GM Ray Shero said. "He's just got that great vision." He racked up 45 points in 44 games for Portland in the WHL last season. Maatta also has some offensive capabilities, which earned him 38 points in 57 games with London of the OHL, and he plays a shutdown role with his junior club. They both can still return to the CHL in 2013-14.
