NewsZemgus Girgensons registered two goals and 29 penalty minutes in six games for Latvia at the World Hockey Championship.
ImpactHe was suspended for one game for spearing Russia's Alexander Burmistrov in the groin following a faceoff. Girgensons and Latvian coach Ted Nolan will be back together in Buffalo next season. Latvia won't advance to the quarterfinal round at the tournament, so Girgensons can start preparing for the 2014-15 campaign.

ImpactHis Latvian squad upset Finland in their tournament opener and they defeated Kazakhstan, which has them tied for second place in Group B during the preliminary round. "Our confidence level as a team has grown and is carrying over here," Girgensons told John Sanful of IIHF.com. "We don't focus on other teams and what they are doing. We have a game plan and need to stick to it. We are successful when we make other teams adjust to us." He has seven shots and he's averaged 17:28 of ice time per contest, which is second most among the team's forwards.

Impact"It was just an amazing experience to wear the 'A' at age 20. I was pretty shocked," he said. "It was pretty amazing to wear it for just one game. It didn't matter if it was the last game. I still wore it, and I loved it." Coach Ted Nolan loves Girgensons' work ethic and he could be a part of Buffalo's young leadership group moving forward.

He has 17 points in 56 games for Buffalo this season and he will be one of Latvia's better players. That said, he is not a fantasy factor.

ImpactNolan seems to like Girgnesons, whom he coached in Latvia. "A nice powerful winger like him, he's only 19 years old", said Nolan. "When he turns 22, 23, he's going to be a man in that position. So he can be a very powerful winger for us.". Nolan played Girgensons on his top line alongside Cody Hodgson and Tyler Ennis against the Flyers Thursday. ImpactThe shot came from teammate Tyler Myers and it may have been tipped before it got to Girgensons. He had stitches above his left eye, which was nearly swollen shut after the game. "He's going to be fine," coach Ron Rolston said. "It's just a matter of probably getting the swelling down." His night ended after five shifts and 4:03 of ice time. Consider him day-to-day for now.

NewsZemgus Girgensons, a 19-year-old prospect with plenty of potential, scored two goals to lead the Buffalo Sabres to a 5-4 shootout win over the Montreal Canadiens in the preseason opener for both teams on Sunday night.
ImpactThe Sabres, who never led, erased four one-goal deficits. Colton Gillies got the Sabres even at 4-4 with 4:24 left in regulation. Jamie McBain also scored for the Sabres. Michael Bournival scored twice for the Canadiens. Martin St-Pierre netted Montreal's second power-play goal at 12:59 into the third to give the Canadiens a 4-3 lead. Erik Nystrom added a power-play goal for Montreal. Jhonas Ehnroth and Matt Hackett split the Sabres' goaltending duties and performed in similar fashion, with Ehnroth turning aside 10 of Montreal's 13 shots and Hackett blocking 11 of 12 shots. For the Canadiens, Peter Budaj allowed two goals on 12 shots and Zachary Fucale allowed two goals on 15 shots.

ImpactThe Sabres chose Girgensons with the 14th overall selection in the 2012 draft and he might've received a look at training camp if he wasn't hurt. The Latvian center has notched three goals and nine points in 33 games during his rookie AHL campaign.
