Johnny Gaudreau continues to shine | 07/10/2014 9:27 AM
NewsJohnny Gaudreau made a great impression at the Flames' development camp.
Impact"Hey, he's a talented guy," Flames GM Brad Treliving said. "You can see some of the other kids had fear in their eyes when he was coming down. I'd hate to play against him in this sort of atmosphere." Gaudreau's next step is to get ready for training camp. After winning the Hobey Baker Award, there's a good chance that he'll make the Flames' opening game roster.
Gaudreau seeks advice of other small forwards | 07/06/2014 8:59 PM
NewsJohnny Gaudreau, who is 5-foot-9, has reached out to other smaller forwards such as Martin St. Louis for advice in how to make it at the NHL level.
ImpactIn a league that is getting bigger, faster and stronger, Gaudreau, a Flames prospect, is 5-foot-9, 150 pounds. "I've got a lot of great advice," Gaudreau said. "I've just got to make sure I follow in their footsteps and do what they've been doing. They said you need to be strong in your legs, definitely work out your legs. And you don't need to be too big in your upper body because you won't be able to stickhandle that well. Just a lot of great pointers from a lot of great guys and I really appreciate it. It's just doing the little things right, keep working out, making sure I'm skating and getting stronger. Obviously I'm going to get stronger. I have to make sure I keep working out and working hard." Gaudreau had 36 goals and 80 points with Boston College last season, and he scored in his only NHL game.
College star Johnny Gaudreau aims for Flames | 07/06/2014 9:27 AM
NewsFlames prospect Johnny Gaudreau has been chosen as one of five finalists for the ESPY award - ESPN's version of the Academy Awards - as the top male college athlete.
ImpactThe honour is a slam dunk for Gaudreau, an offensive dynamo with 36 goals and 80 points in 40 games for Boston College before turning pro for the Flames season finale. The winger, who'll celebrate his 21st birthday next month, has a legitimate shot to be a full-time NHLer as early as next season. His size is an issue - the Flames are fooling nobody by listing him as 5-foot-9 - but Gaudreau's wizardry with the puck is obvious. After scoring a goal in his NHL debut, Gaudreau joined the U.S. team for the world championships and racked up two goals and 10 points in eight games. "It gave me a lot more confidence," Gaudreau said. "I learned a lot out there playing with NHL guys, playing against NHL guys. Getting to play against (Alex) Ovechkin and (Jaromir) Jagr - I think Jagr was playing in the NHL before I was even born - is something pretty special. I think it's going to help me in the long run."
