ImpactAtkinson was hot at the end of last season when he had 10 points in his final six games and it carried over to this season as he was third in AHL scoring before the NHL season started. However, Atkinson suffered a high ankle sprain in training camp and has only managed to play 29 games this year. Atkinson is seen by scouts as a future 25- to 30-goal scorer and someone that should be on everyone's radar next year as a late-round sleeper in deeper leagues.
Cam Atkinson playing well despite sore ankle | 03/30/2013 11:16 AM
NewsCam Atkinson expects the high ankle sprain he suffered in January to irritate him until he can fully rest it this summer but the right winger is feeling better, that much is obvious.
ImpactAtkinson was the most dynamic player on the ice on Thursday in the Blue Jackets' 6-4 loss to Edmonton. Coach Todd Richards said he hasn't spoken to Atkinson about his ankle, but his eyes tell him all he needs to know. "We (the coaches) see the same thing," Richards said. "He had one shift in the second period where (Oilers defenseman) Nick Schultz was chasing him and he couldn't catch him. That's the way Cam can have success, using his quickness, the starts and stops and changing direction to separate himself from players. He wasn't able to do that early on." Atkinson is seen by scouts as a future 25- to 30-goal scorer. He had seven goals and seven assists in 27 games as a rookie last season.

ImpactHe has been out of action since Jan. 23 because of a sprain to the upper part of his left ankle. Atkinson hoped to return last week, but his injured ankle proved to be troublesome to get over. "One day I felt great, and then the next day I'd put pressure on it and it would give out," he said. "It's so frustrating. But it's definitely past the point where if I hurt it it's definitely not going to set me back like it would have." He has one goal on 10 shots in three games this season.

Aaron Portzline on Twitter
ImpactThis according to the Columbus Dispatch's Aaron Portzline. He was already sidelined, but the extended absence is a tough break for the 2-4-1 Blue Jackets and Atkinson, who had 38 points in the AHL during the lockout and already had a goal in three games with Columbus. He hasn't played since Jan. 23, and is droppable for those in need of a roster spot in deeper leagues.

ImpactColumbus coach Todd Richards isn't concerned that his first-line right winger sat out the session, which suggests further that he could be ready for Saturday's opener. "I wouldn't say (I'm) concerned," Richards said. "I guess there's possibilities in anything, whether he's in or he's out (of the lineup). But right now I'm not concerned." The team will check in on him Thursday morning, but he may have been sat just as a precaution.

Atkinson will make a nice late round pick in deeper pools.
Cam Atkinson a top-line guy, Blue Jackets say | 01/12/2013 11:13 AM
NewsNight after night this season, the Springfield Falcons' American Hockey League opponents circled the name of right winger Cam Atkinson on their line-chart whiteboards.
Impact"He's a top-line guy, a guy everybody in that league knows," Blue Jackets assistant general manager Chris MacFarland said. "Teams were saying, `We've got to watch this guy. Don't let this guy beat us.' "Night after night, it didn't matter much. Atkinson, 23, had 17 goals and 21 assists in 33 games. His 38 points are third in the AHL, but it's not the potent production that might make him the sharpest Blue Jacket when training camp opens on Sunday. Playing 33 games in what MacFarland and Atkinson said is the second-best hockey league in the world has put Atkinson in midseason form. It is why, in the strange dynamic of a lockout-shortened season, a player with 27 NHL games might be a training-camp tone-setter.
Cam Atkinson invited to Blue Jackets camp | 01/07/2013 10:08 AM
NewsCam Atkinson will be invited to training camp this season for the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Atkinson was having a great AHL season as he was third in scoring with 38 points including 17 goals, trailing only Jordan Eberle and Justin Schultz. The Blue Jackets hope that his scoring prowess continues into the NHL and it could happen as he had back-to-back 30 goal seasons with Boston College and had a hat trick and seven points in a five game scoring streak with the Blue Jackets at the tail-end of last season.
