There likely won't be much demand for Handzus | 06/17/2014 8:51 AM
NewsMichal Handzus might have a hard time finding a new team now that Chicago is reportedly out of the mix.
ImpactHandzus is coming off of a rough season where he scored four goals and 16 points in 59 contests and averaged just 13:38 minutes per game. He's 37 years old now, so the once reliable secondary scorer isn't expected to do much offensively going forward.
Blackhawks won't bring back Michal Handzus | 06/16/2014 2:19 PM
NewsMichal Handzus won't be back with the Blackhawks next season.
Bob McKenzie on Twitter
ImpactThe team has informed him of their decision, so the veteran forward will test the open market as an unrestricted free agent in July. Handzus said he wasn't ready to retire, so he'll seek a job with another club in the summer. He's coming off a disappointing season, where he generated four goals and 16 points in 59 games, and at the age of 37 he probably won't demand that much in terms of salary.
Michal Handzus not ready to call it a career | 06/05/2014 11:42 AM
NewsMichal Handzus isn't ready to retire yet, but he may not be back with the Blackhawks next season.
Impact"I'll be playing," said the 37-year-old pending unrestricted free agent. "I know what my situation is. I'm not a young guy anymore so we'll see what's going to happen. Obviously this year wasn't the year I'd hoped it would be. I'll put work in, in the summer. Get my body in better shape and we'll see what happens next year." He produced just four goals and 16 points in 59 games this past season.
Michal Handzus glad to come through Wednesday | 05/29/2014 9:40 AM
NewsMichal Handzus hasn't been pleased with his play during the playoffs.
Impact"I haven't played very well," he said. "I want to help the team as much as I can. I'm playing [on the penalty kill] and we were giving up a lot of goals, so I didn't play very well offensively. I'm glad I came through." He registered his second goal and third point in 17 games on Wednesday night. Still, Handzus kept the Blackhawks alive in the postseason when he beat Los Angeles netminder Jonathan Quick in double overtime. He was replaced on the second line by Andrew Shaw in the contest, but scored the winner after he was put back alongside Patrick Kane and Brandon Saad.
Michal Handzus saves Chicago in 2OT thriller | 05/28/2014 11:55 PM
NewsMichal Handzus scored his first career playoff overtime goal Wednesday night 82 minutes after puck drop to lift the Blackhawks to a season-saving 5-4 win over Los Angeles and send the series back to the Staples Center for Game 6.
ImpactHandzus laid his claim to the biggest goal of the Hawks' post-season despite struggling through these playoffs with just three points in 17 games. His lack of contributions have sent him down Coach Quenneville's depth chart, but made no mistake when Brandon Saad fed him right in the slot in the second overtime and he beat Jonathan Quick with a nifty backhander.
Handzus continues to struggle offensively | 05/24/2014 9:21 AM
NewsDespite playing alongside extremely gifted scorers such as Patrick Kane and Patrick Sharp, Michal Handzus continues to be an offensive non-factor.
ImpactWe do concede that Handzus is centering the Hawks' second line mainly due to his defensive ability, but one would think that he could have contributed a little more than the two points in the Hawks' 14 post-season games he has to date. We are a bit baffled that Chicago coach Joel Quenneville has not shifted one of his younger more talented forwards into the second-line center role but we aren't the Hawks' bench boss are we?

NewsMichal Handzus saw just 12:18 of ice time in Game 3, but he made an impact.
ImpactHe was credited with three blocked shots and he picked up an assist on Marcus Kruger's empty net goal in Chicago's 2-0 victory. "The doctor - he's a warrior," coach Joel Quenneville said. "You can't say enough to what he brings the team and the little things he does so well. He leaves it out there. He's a great pro." 3:45 of his ice time was spent on the penalty kill and his fearlessness inspired his teammates in the contest. Handzus is a good leader for the Blackhawks, but he doesn't have much in the way of fantasy relevance.

Other than that we had some flashes but we didn't play 60 minutes. In a tournament like this, every mistake they pay you back. We came close but it was too little too late." He assisted on both of Hossa's goals in Slovakia's 5-3 loss to the Czech Republic.

ImpactOn the bright side, he's making progress. The downer is that he'll still be out a week or two. Especially since his struggles took place at the same time as the Hawks' slow start.

Ex-ref knocks Michael Handzus, Andrew Shaw | 06/13/2013 11:22 PM
NewsFormer NHL referee Kerry Fraser thinks the Blackhawks' Michael Handzus and Andrew Shaw were guilty of embellishment during Chicago's 4-3 triple-overtime triumph over the Boston Bruins in the first game of the Stanley Cup championship series on Wednesday night.
ImpactIn his column for TSN.ca, Fraser writes: "In my judgment, both Michal Handzus and Andrew Shaw overreacted/embellished on the push from behind by Nathan Horton (interference) and Zdeno Chara (high-sticking), respectively. If selling of calls is allowed to continue, the floodgates will likely be opened up by both teams and detract from this terrific level of play." Fraser also criticized Boston's Brad Marchand. He writes that Marchand dragged his skate and took down Hawks goalie Corey Crawford "from behind in a slew-foot fashion. This is not the first time I have seen this player commit the same act in this playoff season (accidentally on purpose). I would advise both teams it will not be tolerated and the attacking player must give way no differently than on a defenceman that is backing into his zone at the blue line. A tripping or interference penalty should result."
Michael Handzus drawing praise from coach | 06/08/2013 10:54 AM
NewsChicago coach Joel Quenneville doesn't think the Blackhawks would have a 3-1 lead in the Western Conference final over the Los Angeles Kings right now were it not for contributions from second-line center Michal Handzus.
ImpactThe Hawks initially acquired the veteran in midseason to help on faceoffs but he's been much more than that in the postseason. He's been a top-six forward. He's been a consistent No. 2 center after Dave Bolland was injured. Handzus may not have been the obvious choice, but he's been the right one for this team and part of the reason Chicago can clinch a spot in the Stanley Cup Final with a victory Saturday in Game 5 at United Center (8 p.m. ET; NBC, CBC, RDS). "He's that kind of guy," Quenneville said of Handzus. "He's low-key, kind of quiet about his disposition. Him and [teammate Marian Hossa] have a history, good friends from home, played on different teams together. He played for Chicago before [and] was comfortable coming back here. He's one of those guys that fits in seamlessly, very aware of what his role is, what the expectations are, fulfilling anything that can contribute to the team's success. That's basically how he's gone about his business."

NewsMichal Handzus is in the midst of a five-game point streak and has jumped up to center the Chicago Blackhawks' second line.
ImpactThe Hawks initially acquired Handzus to help on faceoffs and to give them better depth in their bottom-six forwards, but he's been much more than that this postseason. "When we first got him, we figured he'd give us a little more depth. All of a sudden he moved up the ladder where he's playing in that nice slot for us," coach Joel Quenneville said of Handzus centering Patrick Sharp and Patrick Kane. "That's a big line for us. You have to make sure he doesn't get too high, too low but he's very competitive. We've got to appreciate his positioning and his awareness."
