NewsSenators coach Paul MacLean credits the team's strong farm system as the reason Jim O'Brien didn't make the team.
ImpactO'Brien inked a two-year, one-way deal over the summer. "I think he's a casualty of the Ottawa Senators doing a good job at the draft table and doing a good job of developing players," MacLean said. "They're players that have come after him and developed and they end up being better players. That's what it is." He had five goals and an assist in 29 games last season.

ImpactThe move isn't a surprise as he was believed to be an odd-man out among a crowded group at center. The Senators also placed goaltender Nathan Lawson, forward Corey Cowick and defenseman Tyler Eckford on waivers with the intention of assigning them to the minors.

ImpactThe power play marker was the fifth of the campaign for O'Brien, a figure that amazingly leads all Ottawa forwards and stands only one tally behind the injured Erik Karlsson for the team lead. Kaspars Daugavins and Zack Smith drew assists on the goal.
