Giguere excited to have Patrick Roy as coach | 05/24/2013 9:54 AM

ImpactRoy was named the Avalanche's new head coach on Thursday. "I'm really looking forward to working with him as my coach," Giguere said. "I watched him growing up, and I played against him, and now I get to play for him. It's very exciting. And in all seriousness, I think he'll be good for (Semyon Varlamov) too. To have a man like him giving you pointers as a goalie, that's not too bad." Between Giguere and Roy, Varlamov will have a lot of experience to lean on. Varlamov's tenure with the Avalanche has been a mixed bag at best, but it wouldn't be surprising to see the 25-year-old break out under these conditions.

NewsJean-Sebastien Giguere's decision to rip his teammates last week has raised many questions, among them is why he's speaking up about this instead of captain Gabriel Landeskog.
ImpactGiguere claimed last week that some of his teammates claim more about their end of season Vegas trip than they do about winning. His intention was probably to light a fire under his teammates in hope that they would respond. That's the sort of action a captain might take if it's to be done at all, but when it was brought up, Giguere was quick to defend Landeskog. "He's going to be a tremendous captain," Giguere said. "He's a natural-born leader. He's been very vocal in the dressing room for us. It's hard. You're a last-place team and you're 20 years old and you're the captain. It's not easy. Some other guys have to take charge sometimes. It's not just about him."

"Some guys are more worried about their Vegas trip at the end of the season than playing the games, playing every minute of the game. Quite frankly, I don't care about your Vegas trip right now. It's not constructive. We have to get out of this losing mentality. It starts with me and the next guy beside me, and everybody's got to do their part. It's embarrassing. We practiced defensive zone coverage, and guys weren't taking the body and swirling and stuff like that. This is the stuff we have to work on every day. I told a couple of the guys that 'I don't think we'll have a good game today.' It's unacceptable. It's an everyday job. You've got to work hard every day.
