|Assets:||Can log big minutes and is adept at shutting opponents down. Has a very solid frame, grit and plenty of puck-moving ability. Gives his all every time he hits the ice.|
|Flaws:||Doesn't own high-end offensive acumen, or the ability to quarterback a power play, so that limits his overall value to his team. Also, he isn't much of an intimidator.|
|Career Potential:||Solid big-minute defenseman.|

Quiet Hjalmarsson a rock on Hawk blueline | 06/01/2014 9:40 AM
NewsNiklas Hjalmarsson, who has been a rock on the Blackhawk blueline, believes that the Western Conference finals had to be decided by a Game 7.
ImpactHjalmarsson is looking forward to Sunday's contest indicating this is why he plays hockey. "I really think this series deserved a Game 7, and I think the crowd deserved it, too. And I think it's going to be a great finish to a great series," Hjalmarsson said. "Hopefully we'll be the winner out of this one, but it's been some really good hockey that's been playing in these games, definitely." As we've said before, don't miss this one. It starts at 8:00 pm ET.
Hjalmarsson tops Hawk d-men in playoff games | 05/24/2014 9:49 AM
NewsIf we asked you which of the current Chicago defensemen has played the most post-season games we imagine Niklas Hjalmarsson would not be your answer.
ImpactMost might have said Duncan Keith or perhaps Brent Seabrook. Well, as you might have guessed by now, Hjalmarsson is the correct answer. The underated rearguard has 89 playoff games under his belt to Keith's 88 and Seabrook's 84. Typical of Hjalmarsson, he is under the radar once again.
Niklas Hjalmarsson (throat) can talk | 05/19/2014 3:28 PM
NewsNiklas Hjalmarsson (throat) is healthy enough to talk now.

ImpactHjalmarsson has been playing regardless. He sustained the injury when he was struck by the puck in the throat on May 4. Despite that, he leads the league with 42 blocked shots in 13 playoff games.
Niklas Hjalmarsson fourth in blocked shots | 05/18/2014 8:25 AM
NewsNiklas Hjalmarsson is tied for fourth in blocked shots in the playoffs.
ImpactHe can take over the lead today with three blocks as he trails Daniel Girardi and Johnny Boychuk by two and Alexei Emelin by one. All three either are out of the playoffs (Boychuk) or not playing today (Girardi and Emelin. Hjalmarsson has been solid defensively despite a minus-three rating and has three assists in 12 playoff games.
Hjalmarsson misses practice, will still play | 05/09/2014 4:50 PM
NewsNiklas Hjalmarsson (throat) missed Chicago's Friday morning skate.
ImpactHjalmarsson is still expected to play on Friday, according the Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville. This was Hjalmarsson's second straight day off the ice, but given that he was struck in the throat by the puck hard enough that he's not supposed to speak, it's not surprising that he's resting when he gets the chance.
Hjalmarsson contributes without speaking | 05/07/2014 4:50 PM
NewsJohnny Oduya doesn't think that the fact that Niklas Hjalmarsson couldn't speak during Tuesday's game was a big disadvantage.
ImpactOduya is Hjalmarsson's defensive partner. "Obviously, there might be times where a quick callout or something would help out a little bit, but mostly I know where he is," Oduya said. "I can still help him out and talk to him." Hjalmarsson was struck in the throat by the puck in Game 2, but he still managed to play 17:12 minutes in Game 3.
Niklas Hjalmarsson plays without speaking | 05/07/2014 8:37 AM
NewsNiklas Hjalmarsson logged 17:12 of ice time in Game 3 despite not being medically cleared to speak.
ImpactHe was struck in the throat by a puck in Game 2 on Sunday. Hjalmarsson probably sustained a fractured larynx on the play, but he didn't miss a shift. Aside from the obvious pain he is playing through, not being able to communicate on the ice is also an issue that he had to deal with. "There are some times you'd like to have some communication with your partner, with a goalie, line changes, who's up and not, who's got who," coach Joel Quenneville said. "But he's a smart guy, and I think he's pretty familiar with his partner, the goalie, those situations. And we'll see how they adapt around the changes, how that plays out." Hjalmarsson has three assists and 34 blocks in nine 2014 postseason games.

Hjalmarsson has a great quiet game | 04/26/2014 12:06 PM
NewsIf you are looking for an unsung hero from the Blackawks' 3-2 overtime win over the Blues Friday night, take a look at what Niklas Hjalmarsson did in the game.
ImpactHe blocked six shots, giving him 11 for the series and played a very solid defense in his 23:58 of playing time. Guys like Hjalmarsson don't get much press, but the stay-at-home rearguard surely deserves a lot of credit for the Hawks' big victory Friday night.
Hjalmarsson feels good now after OLY hangover | 03/07/2014 9:19 AM
NewsNiklas Hjalmarsson finally feels back to normal after returning from the 2014 Sochi Olympics.
Impact"I started feeling normal again (Wednesday)," Hjalmarsson said. "It's been the same thing for most of the other guys, too, so I can't complain, but it's been an adjustment. I haven't been sleeping as much as you want." The timezone change and travel will impact everyone differently. Hjalmarsson won a silver medal with Sweden at the Winter Games.
Hjalmarsson having a banner year offensively | 01/06/2014 11:12 AM
NewsNiklas Hjalmarsson got his fourth goal of the 2013-14 campaign in Sunday's shootout loss to San Jose.
ImpactHjalmarsson has set new career highs this season with four goals and 18 points in 45 games. He leads the Blackhawks with 89 shot blocks and he has recorded a plus-13 rating.
Hjalmarsson will shatter points career-high | 12/01/2013 9:26 AM
NewsNiklas Hjalmarsson scored a goal in Saturday's 5-2 win over Phoenix.
ImpactHjalmarsson has four points in his last five games. He's likely to shatter his career-high of 17 points after recording 13 points in his first 28 contests this season.
Niklas Hjalmarsson sets up 2 goals Wednesday | 11/28/2013 11:21 AM
NewsNiklas Hjalmarsson collected two helpers Wednesday night.
ImpactHe earned an assist on Chicago's tying goal from Patrick Sharp and he helped set up Patric Kane's game winner late in the third. Hjalmarsson looks like he is going to set new personal bests for assists and points this season. He already has 10 helpers and 12 points in 26 games.
Niklas Hjalmarsson more involved offensively | 11/08/2013 9:55 AM
NewsNiklas Hjalmarsson has a goal and seven assists in 16 games this season.
Impact"The coaches have always tried to push me on that side of my game," Hjalmarsson said. "They always tell me to try to participate a little bit more offensively. I think I'm just getting more comfortable with the puck. I've been here for a couple of years now, and you just get more comfortable as you rack up the years here. I'm just feeling confident in my game." He's currently on pace for about 36 assists, which would more than double his previous career high. Hjalmarsson contributed eight helpers and 10 points in 46 games during the lockout-shortened season.
Niklas Hjalmarsson has been racking up points | 10/24/2013 11:37 AM
NewsNiklas Hjalmarsson is surprisingly tied for the team lead in scoring.
ImpactHe has contributed six assists through nine games to tie him with Chicago's early-season scoring leaders Patrick Kane and Brandon Saad. "It's always nice to see," Hjalmarsson said. "I've deserved those assists I've gotten so far. I'm trying to create more and trying to join the rush a little bit more." He also has a plus-7 rating, 10 shots and 21 blocks. His scoring pace will probably slow down though, as he has never reached the 20-point mark in his career and his previous personal high for points in a year came in 2009-10 when he posted 17.
Hjalmarsson took less money with Chicago | 09/05/2013 9:35 AM
NewsNiklas Hjalmarsson suggested that he might have given Chicago something of a hometown discount when he inked his five-year/$20.5 million contract.
Impact"Maybe I could have gotten more somewhere else but I make a lot of money so I don't really have to think about that too much," said Hjalmarsson. "I really like playing for Chicago. I've been here for my whole career overseas and it pretty much feels like home. To imagine playing for a different team is tough for me because I feel so much for the city and for the team." Hjalmarsson is a top-four defenseman that blocks shots and kills penalties. That being said, he doesn't do much offensively.
Hjalmarsson's deal worth $4.1 mil annually | 09/04/2013 10:15 AM
NewsNiklas Hjalmarsson's new five-year deal with Chicago is reportedly worth $4.1 million annually.
Pierre LeBrun on Twitter
ImpactHjalmarsson will still come with a $3.5 million cap hit in 2013-14 before his new contract kicks in. Chicago has $36.6 million in cap space spent on seven players for the 2015-16 campaign, not including potential unrestricted free agents Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews. Although the cap will presumably increase significantly over the next couple years, they might still find themselves in a difficult position at that point.
Chicago inks Hjalmarsson to 5-year extension | 09/04/2013 9:42 AM
NewsNiklas Hjalmarsson has agreed to a five-year extension with the Chicago Blackhawks.
ImpactThe financial terms haven't been revealed yet, but he still has one campaign at $3.5 million left on his old deal. Hjalmarsson had two goals and 10 points in 46 games last season. He's a solid top-four blueliner, but he doesn't do a ton offensively and that isn't expected to change.
Hjalmarsson posts team-worst minus-3 rating | 06/20/2013 8:49 AM
NewsNiklas Hjalmarsson was a team-worst minus-three in Chicago's 6-5 overtime win Wednesday.
Impact"I hope it was entertaining for you guys. Personally I didn't feel like that at all as a defenseman. Five goals against is too much. I was on the ice for three of them," Hjalmarsson said. "As long as we win I'll be minus-3 every single game. I'm just happy with the outcome." The last time he was a minus player was June 2 against the Los Angeles Kings. Interestingly, Chicago won that game too.
Improve against Bruins' top line: Hjalmarsson | 06/15/2013 11:01 AM
NewsBlackhawks defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson says it doesn't matter if Nathan Horton is out (shoulder) and Tyler Seguin replaces him on the Boston Bruins' top line for Game 2 tonight of the Stanley Cup championship series in Chicago tonight.
ImpactHorton's status for tonight remains undecided but Hjalmarsson said the Blackhawks know they have to do a better job of defending that line, regardless. "I think that's a line that has most of the offensive abilities that the good line should have,"Hjalmarsson said. "They got a big body with (Milan) Lucic and Horton is a pretty big guy, too, and (David) Krejci's a good playmaker and good shot, too. So they're obviously one of the best lines in the league, if not the best."
Hjalmarsson steps up in Game 4 | 06/07/2013 8:39 AM
NewsNiklas Hjalmarsson had two assists in a 3-2 victory Thursday.
ImpactHjalmarsson also logged a playoffs-high 24:57 minutes to help fill the void created by Duncan Keith's suspension. Hjalmarsson was impressed by the Blackhawks play after establishing a 3-2 lead at 1:10 of the third period. "We chipped pucks down and the puck just went to their end pretty quick, so we didn't have to play much in our end," Hjalmarsson said. "We had a lot of confidence there." They limited the Kings to just two shots in the third period.
Hjalmarsson 'went blank' after no-goal call | 05/30/2013 8:45 AM
NewsNiklas Hjalmarsson was furious after his potentially game-winning goal was disallowed late in the third period of Game 7.
ImpactHjalmarsson's goal was called off because an official had blown the play dead for an incident that happened away from Hjalmarsson. "I went blank from there; I got so mad," Hjalmarsson said. "I didn't see the situation and what happened there, but it doesn't matter now. We got the win and Seabs scored a huge goal for us. If we would've lost, it would've been a tough one. But since we won it doesn't really matter much." The call was, to put it lightly, immediately controversial, but as Hjalmarsson said, it was rendered moot thanks to Brent Seabrook's overtime goal. We're sure there's some Hjalmarsson fantasy owners are still sore about the decision though.
'Pump-up speeches' aide in Hawks turnaround | 05/29/2013 8:51 AM
NewsNiklas Hjalmarsson credited the Blackhawks internal talks as part of what helped them turn this series around.
Impact"We had a great talk here after Game 4, and I think the last two games we've been playing the way we want to play," Niklas Hjalmarsson said. "We have a great group of guys in here." Chicago has fought back from a 3-1 series deficit to force a Game 7. Bryan Bickell termed them as "pump-up speeches" and while the team wants to keep the content of them secret, it certainly seems like they've provided them with extra motivation and focus.
Hawks changed defensive pairs for Game 5 | 05/26/2013 10:47 AM
NewsThe Chicago Blackhawks reshuffled their defensive pairs for Game 5 against the Detroit Red Wings Saturday night and it appeared to help them in a 4-1 triumph.
ImpactDuncan Keith was reunited with longtime partner Brent Seabrook, who had previously been struggling, but both stars were excellent Saturday night on offense and defense. Niklas Hjalmarsson was with Johnny Oduya. Michael Rozsival and Nick Leddy rounded out the couplings. While all six Chicago d-men were conspicuous with their contributions, Hjalmarsson said before the game that the new arrangements were worth only a shrug. "It doesn't really matter who we end up playing with," he said. "I know the guy next to me is going to have a great effort. It's a matter of focusing on yourself and focusing on your own game instead of thinking about what everyone else is doing out there."
Niklas Hjalmarsson adding some offense | 04/21/2013 10:36 AM
NewsDefenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson has always been thought of a defensive-minded blue liner, but he has become more of a two-way threat this season.
ImpactThe transformation might not be noticeable in his stat line as his total of 10 points in 44 games is not drastically different from the pace he set in past seasons, but he has been joining the rush more extensively and has generating more scoring chances. "The way I've played so far this season is my best hockey since I got here," said Hjalmarsson. "I'm more comfortable with the puck and making more plays," he said. "There's not much difference in the D-zone - I've been pretty solid in there the past couple of years - but I've been trying to do more things in the neutral zone and the offensive zone. Even though I don't put up big numbers, I've been trying to be more offensive."
Rare loss irks Hawks and Niklas Hjalmarsson | 03/30/2013 10:48 AM
NewsA late goal by Anaheim defenseman Sheldon Souray gave the Chicago Blackhawks a 2-1 loss and a great deal of frustration Friday night.
Impact"We didn't play good defense at all," Chicago defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson said. "I don't think we got pucks deep the way we wanted. And a little too many odd-man rushes. The way we played defense wasn't good enough." The Hawks fell to 25-5-3 on the season and 0-2-1 against the Ducks.
Niklas Hjalmarsson leads Hawks in blocks | 02/26/2013 7:08 AM
NewsNiklas Hjalmarsson is leading the Chicago Blackhawks with 49 blocked shots.
ImpactThe Hawks have three players in the top 21 in blocked shots in the NHL as Hjalmarsson is tied for fourth while Brent Seabrook is tied for eighth, one behind Hjalmarsson and Johnny Oduya is tied for 21st with 38. The play of the defense has been a major reason why Chicago is unbeaten in 19 straight regulation games and blocked shots by the blueliners really have helped the Blackhawks keep the shots on goal to a minimum.
Blackhawks turn it around shorthanded | 01/29/2013 8:05 AM
NewsThe Chicago Blackhawks are second in the NHL at killing penalties.
ImpactThe Blackhawks were terrible last season on the penalty kill as they were 27th, but the turnaround this season has been amazing as they have given up only one goal in 23 chances. Niklas Hjalmarsson leads the team in shorthanded minutes at 20:17 in six games. The special team is a big reason the Blackhawks are 6-0 in the early going.
