"Hopefully it doesn't come to that, but it's not like I haven't been over there before." He suited up for Brynas in the Swedish Elite league during the lockout last year. Franson, who hasn't been at Leafs' training camp, has been practicing with Ryerson University men's hockey team. His negotiations with the Maple Leafs aren't going anywhere right now.
Leafs, Cody Franson talks are at a standstill | 09/19/2013 11:16 AM
NewsCody Franson is still a no-show at Toronto's training camp because his contract negotiations with the team are at a standstill.
Impact"I think it's in my best interests and the team's best interests to do it (sign a one-year deal)," he told TSN Tuesday. "That's part of negotiations. We'll see how it goes." He is believed to be seeking a one-year deal worth $3 million, but the Leafs would rather sign him to longer term contract because the club has several blueliners to sign already, including Dion Phaneuf, Mark Fraser, Paul Ranger and Jake Gardiner, after the 2013-14 season.
Cody Franson, Leafs remain deadlocked | 09/13/2013 10:46 AM
NewsCody Franson told TSN that he thinks a contract will be worked out with the Toronto Maple Leafs in the very near future.
Impact"I really like playing in Toronto," he said. "I think we have a great team and we have some unfinished business to take care of. I learned a lot from the coaches last year and felt like my game took a step forward. I understand the cap situation this team faces and have been ready to sign a one-year deal for some time. I hope this gets worked out soon so I can get back on the ice with my teammates." However, it looks like negotiations have hit a bit of a wall. Franson is reportedly open to signing a one-year deal worth $3 million, but the Leafs would prefer to get him under a two-year contract at a "fair number" because they have several defenders who are eligible for free agency next summer.

Leafs feel they can fit Franson under cap | 08/18/2013 3:10 PM
NewsThe Toronto Maple Leafs remain committed to re-signing Cody Franson.
ImpactThe Maple Leafs already have six defensemen signed to one-way contracts and that doesn't include Jake Gardiner. Combine that with the fact that they have less than $5 million left in cap space and still need to re-sign restricted free agent Nazem Kadri, and that's led to speculation that Toronto might simply trade the rights to Franson. That might still happen, but for now Maple Leafs GM Dave Nonis is insisting that he can fit both Franson and Kadri under the cap ceiling.

ImpactIt sounds like Franson's contract demands are making them think twice about keeping him. By signing David Clarkson and Tyler Bozak to big contracts, the Maple Leafs have put themselves in an awkward cap situations. They also recently threw $1 million at Paul Ranger, who is attempting an NHL comeback after showing what he can do in the AHL last season. That gives the Maple Leafs just over $6 million in cap space with Franson, Matt Fraser, Leo Komarov, and Nazem Kadri still unsigned as restricted free agents.

ImpactFranson was guilty of a brutal turnover on the first goal of the game when he tried to clear the puck between his legs through the middle of the ice. Of course, the Bruins pounced and scored shortly after, but Franson's two goals over the first and second periods staked the Leafs to a lead they wouldn't relinquish until the final minute of the third. Unfortunately for Franson, that wasn't enough as Boston won Game 7 six minutes into overtime to eliminate Toronto.

NewsCody Franson suited up in Toronto's opener of the 2013 campaign, but he has been a healthy scratch for the team's past two games.
ImpactWith the Maple Leafs getting Jake Gardiner back from concussion-like symptoms and Mike Kostka's emergence, it looks like Franson will be in tough for playing time again.
