|Assets:||Owns an impressive size/skill package. Can score goals and also play a physical game from the wing position. Is at his best when he drives through heavy scoring areas and uses his size, puck skills and sneaky-fast shot.|
|Flaws:||Must prove he can play a consistent brand of hockey in all three zones, since he tends to disappear for stretches. Takes shifts off from time to time. Could stand to diversify his game a little to keep defenses guessing.|
|Career Potential:||Big, inconsistent scoring winger.|

Nolan, Sabres hope to rebuild Drew Stafford | 12/04/2013 6:55 AM
NewsDrew Stafford has a clean slate with interim coach Ted Nolan, but he still hasn't regained his offensive touch.
ImpactStafford and Buffalo's previous regime had their share of issues, which may have contributed to his lack of confidence. "The one thing hopefully I can help is his mental mind-set, make him feel better about himself," Nolan said. "In return, he'll be a better contributor." Stafford's goalless skid has hit 11 consecutive games and he has just four assists over that time. He plays on Buffalo's top line and quarterbacks the power play, so he'll have to show something soon or his chances could run out with the Sabres.
Goals have been tough to get for D. Stafford | 11/25/2013 9:38 AM
NewsDrew Stafford hasn't scored a goal in his last eight games.
ImpactHe has just three assists over that span. Stafford has contribute just two goals and eight points in 25 games this season. "We need to put it away," said Stafford. "We are getting the chances, myself included. It's just a matter of taking that little extra second and just find a spot instead of shooting to get shots."
Drew Stafford posts two points vs. Sharks | 11/06/2013 7:17 AM
NewsDrew Stafford notched a goal and an assist in Buffalo's 5-4 shootout win over San Jose.
ImpactHe also four shots on goal in Tuesday's contest. The win was just the third of the year for the abysmal Sabres and it came against a very good Sharks team. "It's huge. Even the way we won, we didn't take the easy way out," said Stafford. "We definitely made it interesting, but we weathered their storm because they're a heck of a team over there. They wanted to take the game back, and we were able to weather it and get the win." He snapped a six-game scoring drought with his two-point performance to give him five points in 17 matches.
Drew Stafford scores first goal of year | 10/12/2013 11:56 PM
NewsDrew Stafford scored the only goal for the Sabres on Saturday night in their 2-1 loss.
ImpactIt was Stafford's first goal of the season. After scoring 31 and 20 in consecutive season, Stafford fell off dramatically last season with just six. Buffalo will struggle to score as it is, so Stafford finding his old form would be a big help. Cody Hodgson and Mark Pysyk had the assists.
Drew Stafford needs to pick up his game | 09/28/2013 9:09 AM
NewsDrew Stafford has not played particularly well this pre-season.
ImpactThis is somewhat troubling for the Sabres as Stafford is being counted on to score goals and rebound from a very poor 2013 showing in which he tallied only six times in 46 games. Given that Stafford is paid $4 million per season, Sabre management may soon become frustrated if Stafford doesn't pick up his game.
D.Stafford hopes to bounce back with Sabres | 05/09/2013 10:34 AM
NewsThe lockout-shortened season didn't go the way Drew Stafford planned.
Impact"I had an expectation for myself to carry over from the previous two years and continue to have production goal-scoring-wise," Stafford said. "It just wasn't there this year." He registered 31 goals in 2010-11 and 20 in 2011-12, but found the back of the net just six times in 46 games in 2013. Stafford finished the year with 18 points and a career worse minus-16 rating. He has two seasons left on a four-year, $16 million deal and it isn't clear if he'll be part of Buffalo's rebuilding plan. Stafford hopes to be back though and he wants to rebound with the Sabres.
Drew Stafford picks up 2 points in loss | 03/28/2013 10:40 PM
NewsDrew Stafford scored a goal and added an assist for the Sabres in a 5-4 shootout loss to Florida Thursday.
ImpactHe has clearly responded to being scratched for two straight games prior to this one and might just be getting back on track toward the end of a miserable season. Nathan Gerbe, Marcus Foligno and Andrej Sekera also tallied for the Sabres in the loss.
Drew Stafford will dress Thursday night | 03/27/2013 5:31 PM
NewsDrew Stafford will get back into Buffalo's lineup Thursday whether Thomas Vanek can play or not.
ImpactCoach Ron Rolston made that call Wednesday after practice. Stafford has been a healthy scratch for the last two games, but he isn't wondering about being traded. "That's not something I was thinking about. I need to ignore the noise, focus on getting better and improving myself," he said. "Being out of the lineup, my No. 1 priority is focusing on coming back, playing strong and playing hard and helping this team win games. That's all about where my head is at." He has four goals and 11 points in 31 games this campaign.
Stafford will be a healthy scratch Saturday | 03/23/2013 4:06 PM
NewsDrew Stafford will spend Saturday's game in the press box.
Impact"It's definitely disappointing, but it's his decision and something I have to respect," Stafford said. "I have to work my way back into the lineup. It's no secret I haven't been getting on the score sheet." Stafford has just four goals and 11 points in 31 games this season. That's a huge step down from his 31-goal campaign in 2010-11. Maybe have a hot finish to the season following this healthy scratch, but we can't recommend owning him in standard leagues at this time.
Drew Stafford demoted to Sabres' fourth line | 02/19/2013 4:39 PM
NewsBuffalo Sabres coach Lindy Ruff has demoted Drew Stafford to the fourth line for Tuesday night's game.
ImpactStafford has just one goal on the season and is carrying a minus-5 rating and Ruff is hoping a demotion snaps him out of his slump. We don't expect Stafford to stay on the fourth line for long since the Sabres don't have a ton of scoring talent up front. That said, we also don't know when the notoriously streaky Stafford will start scoring again. It might be best in some formats to walk away from him and monitor him from the waiver wire.
Stafford relieved goal-scoring slump over | 02/16/2013 10:40 AM
NewsDrew Stafford was relieved he scored Friday night ending a 17-game goal drought.
ImpactThe talented winger had scored 51 goals in the Sabres' last 140 games prior his 17-game goalless streak. "That's something I've been working for, and finally it's nice to get rewarded," said Stafford. "I've been waiting for it to happen. Finally, it went in. It was a good feeling. More importantly, it's not about me in here. It was a great win by the guys, and I was glad to contribute and hopefully continue." As he is a streaky player, we wouldn't be surprised if Stafford went on a bit of roll now that the pressure of scoring is off him.
Drew Stafford ends 17-game goal drought | 02/15/2013 10:50 PM
NewsDrew Stafford ended his 17-game goal drought in Buffalo's 4-2 win over the Bruins on Friday night.
ImpactStafford also had an assist to give him seven points in 15 games this year. The winger has 45 shots on net this season, but a miserable 2.2 shooting percentage, which is obviously something that should improve so long as he continues to generate chances. Christian Ehrhoff and Tyler Myers also both had a goal and an assist, with Cody Hodgson potting in the other. Tyler Ennis had two assists.
Drew Stafford mired in bad goal drought | 02/15/2013 10:08 AM
NewsDrew Stafford hasn't scored a goal since March 31, a span of 17 games.
ImpactEven more amazing: Of the 300 players without a goal this season, nobody has come up empty more times than Stafford, who has 40 shots on goal, good for 29th in the league. "You just have to keep with it, keep working. You can't give up," Stafford said. "You can't let the negativity creep in. You can't show up to the rink the next day and be moping around because that just brings everyone else down. It's times like these that a good thing I like to say is, `The game reveals your character.' Stafford, who had 51 goals over the last two seasons, is in the second year of a four-year, $16 million deal. He has a mere five assists on the season.
Drew Stafford still goalless despite 40 shots | 02/13/2013 11:02 AM
NewsDrew Stafford added four more shots to his season total of 40 in Tuesday's loss to Ottawa.
ImpactThe Sabres have been struggling on offense beyond their top line and Stafford doesn't have a goal yet this season. He has the most shots among NHL skaters who haven't found the back of the net. Stafford has five assists in 14 games.
Sabres search for secondary offense | 02/05/2013 9:02 AM
NewsDrew Stafford has no goals on 23 shots this season.
ImpactLinemates Marcus Foligno and Tyler Ennis have three goals between them, as the Sabres have struggled nine games into the year to secure offense beyond their top line of Thomas Vanek, Cody Hodgson and Jason Pominville. Coach Lindy Ruff had a one-on-one conversation with Stafford and showed video to other players, while placing emphasis on capitalizing on their chances.
Drew Stafford is still scoreless in 2013 | 02/02/2013 5:56 PM
NewsDrew Stafford had three shots on goal and a minus-one rating in Saturday's 6-1 loss to Montreal.
ImpactStafford has no goals on 22 shots in eight games this season. On the plus side, he has recorded three assists and it should just be a matter of time before he finds the back of the net.
