Kostka sustained the injury in Game 1 against Boston and wasn't able to play for the rest of the series. ImpactKostka suffered the injury in Game 1 and persevered through the rest of the game even though he couldn't shoot. "It's heartbreaking," Kostka said. "It's been a really exciting year for me and then, the emotions of being a part of the first (Toronto) team in nine years to be in the playoffs. Then, the second period you play, you get an injury and can't continue." Kostka will continue to skate and hope that the Leafs have a long run so he could get back in the lineup.

ImpactKostka came close to making the Panthers last season, but fell just short in training camp. He ended up making his NHL debut at 27 this season. "It's not one of those when you come back and you're really trying to hand it to them or anything," said Kostka. "I have a lot of friends and (Panthers coach) Kevin Dineen was a big mentor for me my first two years in (AHL) Portland. Then he gave me some good opportunities in exhibition games last year. It's not like I'm coming back here for revenge. But when you come back and know a lot of guys, I'm excited to come back and try to get the victory."

Impact"I thought Mike Kostka was a dominant player," said Leafs coach Randy Carlyle. "Played a lot of minutes. Didn't make too many mistakes. Looked like a guy that was comfortable playing in this type of situation. He had a great year in the American Hockey League. It really is astounding that he hasn't played a game in the league." Kostka is 27 years old and is only now playing in his first NHL season. He's put up big offensive numbers in the AHL and might have some fantasy value if the Leafs continue to give him plenty of playing time.

ImpactHe has played very well for Marlies in the AHL this season and has been impressive since Jake Gardiner went down with a neck injury. If the lockout ends and Gardiner is still deemed unfit to play then it might increase Kostka's chances of sticking with the big club. "When he goes to the NHL, yeah, he's going to have to make adjustments," said assistant coach Gord Dineen. "But I think he's smart enough to make those adjustments, just maybe do things a little bit quicker sometimes with the puck." Kostka has racked up 29 points in 31 games this year and currently sits tied for second in scoring among AHL defensemen.
