|Flaws:||Doesn't score as many goals as his talent suggests; he usually chooses to pass instead of shooting the puck more often. Has been thrown off his game in critical spots in the past, and is often criticized for a lack of clutch ability (rightly or wrongly).|

J. Thornton has overpowered Kings on faceoffs | 05/20/2013 6:36 PM
NewsJoe Thornton has dominated the Los Angeles Kings in the faceoff circle three games into San Jose's second-round series.
San Jose Mercury News
ImpactHe has won 62.7 percent (32 of 51) of his draws against the Kings going into Tuesday night's Game 4 match-up. Thornton won just 39 of his 83 faceoffs in San Jose's four-game sweep versus Vancouver in Round 1. "The last couple games, it's been working out for me. Hopefully I can continue that," Thornton said. "Puck possession is everything, so as much as you can have the puck, it's better to get on offense. It's a competitive situation. You just try to win as many as you can." Thornton has collected an assist in each of the Sharks' past two games to give him eight points in seven playoff outings.

NewsAfter sweeping the Vancouver Canucks, the San Jose Sharks have some light days ahead of them.
San Jose Mercury News
ImpactJoe Thornton said the next few days would be about resting and getting healthy. It's a great opportunity for the Sharks to stay fresh, especially given how rough this year's condensed schedule was, but it could also make them rusty going into the second round. They will likely go a little over a week between games.

NewsCaptain Joe Thornton acknowledged Saturday that the team was concerned about sustaining injuries in its regular season finale against the Kings.
San Jose Mercury News
ImpactOnce it became clear the Sharks weren't in a position to gain home-ice advantage for the playoffs, the team's greatest concern was ensuring none of their key players sustained injuries. "You want to win every game we play, but you don't want to get hurt," Thornton said. "We tried our best. They were better than us." The Sharks will square off against Vancouver in the opening round of the playoffs.

CSN Bay Area
ImpactThornton had been playing between T.J. Galiardi and Brent Burns earlier in the game but with the Sharks not playing well, McLellan made the switch and put Scott Gomez at center for Galiardi and Burns. Thornton was a plus-one when Desjardins scored a beautiful goal in the third so these line combinations may stay intact when the Sharks take on Dallas Tuesday.

CSN Bay Area
ImpactThe Sharks center acknowledged that he has to play better and coach Todd McLellan agrees. "Absolutely, he has to be better. There are situations that he has to be better in," said San Jose's bench boss. "I'm glad that he took that responsibility. He's the leader, everybody follows. It starts with him, but there are other guys, as well." Thornton's line, alongside Martin Havlat and Brent Burns, were responsible for some defensive lapses, which led to their benching.

ImpactJumbo Joe extended his point streak to four games (two tallies, four assists) as the Sharks bested the Minnesota Wild 4-2. He's really delivered what many hoped for, in many cases by a relatively cheap draft price, with almost a point per game (35 in 36) and a moderate throwback to his power forward days with 24 PIM.

The days of Joe Thornton registering 100 penalty minutes are a distant memory, as proven by the fact Jumbo Joe had only been assessed one measly minor penalty prior to picking up seven PIM in Friday's clash with the Hawks.
Joe Thornton racks up 4 point night in win | 01/25/2013 4:50 AM
NewsJoe Thornton exploded for three assists and his first goal of the season in the Sharks 5-3 win over the Phoenix Coyotes.
ImpactThornton has kept his skills sharp by playing overseas during the lockout, racking up nine points in the first three games. He still has a few elite seasons left due to his vision and IQ on the ice. Having some of the elite snipers in NHL on his wing also helps. The Sharks are arguably the most fantasy friendly team in the NHL, with Thornton being one of the main reasons. He fed Patrick Marleau twice and Logan Couture, two of his elite teammates. He's still an elite center, and with a lower average draft position, is providing the best value since his early years in Boston.
Joe Thornton is glad he played during lockout | 01/10/2013 4:55 PM

CSN Bay Area

"Going through it in 2004, I just didn't know when it was going to end, so I just thought pack my bags and go right away and get in shape. I'm glad I did it," Thornton said. "I enjoyed my time over there, and it was good for my wife and baby. They could see their grandpa and grandma and things like that, but we're glad to be home now." Thornton's time in Davos should serve him well going into the shortened season.

NewsJoe Thornton ended his second sojourn in the Swiss League after some solid work.
ImpactThe big playmaker produced more than a point-per-game (36 in 33) along with 36 penalty minutes and a +6 rating. Those numbers do reflect him slowing down a bit lately; he had 54 points - 44 assists alone - in the 40 games he played for Davos in 2004-05. Still, it wouldn't be shocking if he benefits from an abbreviated season.
