Coach Joe Sacco gave his reasoning behind the decision by saying, "He wasn't up to his best (against Edmonton). He struggled. He gives you everything he has, but sometimes you have to make a change that you think gives you the best chance to win and his play has dropped. It wasn't just the one game, it's been a few games. He's taken some bad penalties too at times. I talked to him about that and he knows that. When he gets back in the lineup, I expect him to be better for it." Greg Zanon will replace him in the lineup.

The Colorado Avalanche have been leaning on O'Byrne more while Erik Johnson and Ryan Wilson are sidelined. "You know my game. It's not flashy. I want to be hard to play against," O'Byrne said. "Give the puck to the forwards, block shots, kill penalties. Whatever the coaches need from me I do, whether I'm playing 11 minutes or 21 minutes. We just got to start winning some games here." Even with the added responsibility, O'Byrne only has fantasy value in leagues that count hits and blocked shots.
