|Assets:||An excellent physical package, he owns an imposing frame, smooth fundamentals and all-round acumen. Can play on the power play, where he displays poise, composure and a heavy point shot. Excels in one-on-one situations.|
|Flaws:||Is still a little inconsistent in his own zone, and prone to gaffes every now and then. His physical game has improved greatly, but it isn't consistent. Offensively, he's not as silky-smooth as a natural power-play quarterback.|

Alexander Edler has second worst plus-minus | 12/01/2013 8:41 AM
NewsAlexander Edler has the second worst plus/minus in the NHL at minus-14.
ImpactHe is better than only Nail Yakupov who is a minus-16. Coach John Tortorella is not happy with his play and called him out on Saturday. He was benched for part of Saturday's game as he saw only 18:47 minutes of action his lowest total this season as his previous low was 21:46. Canuck Alex Edler returns in Pittsburgh today | 10/19/2013 12:03 PM
NewsAlex Edler doesn't plan to change the way he approaches hockey.
ImpactThe fact that he's facing the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday, his first game back from a three-game suspension for an illegal check to the head of Thomas Hertl, has only heightened his resolve to be a defensive deterrent and offensive contributor for the Canucks. Edler checked the San Jose rookie near the Canucks' bench in the second period of an Oct. 10 meeting at Rogers Arena, and the winger's helmet flew off. The league ruled that the head was the main point of contact. And because Hertl was spun around as opposed to being driven backward by the blow, NHL disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan made the ruling. He said Edler should have taken a better angle toward Hertl - even though Hertl ducked down and looked like he was trying to jump around the defenseman. "I'm not going to change the way I play," Edler said. "I look at myself as a clean player and I try to play aggressive and that's when I'm at my best." He'll have to be Saturday against the high-flying Pens.
NHL hands Alexander Edler a 3-game suspension | 10/11/2013 4:34 PM
NewsAlexander Edler has been suspended for three games for his high hit on San Jose's Tomas Hertl.
Pro Hockey Talk
ImpactThe incident occurred during Thursday's game. The NHL felt the route Edler took to make the check contributed to the head being the principal point of target. Had Edler approached things differently, the league feels he could have "hit him squarely through the body." The three-game suspension will keep Edler out of the lineup until Oct. 19.

Edler didn't receive a penalty as a result of the play, but the league is evaluating whether or not it is an illegal check to the head. It's worth adding taht Edler has been suspended by the NHL before and Hertl was able to stay in the game.

NewsAlex Edler has caught the eye of new Vancouver Canucks coach John Tortorella in training camp and exhibition play.
Impact"He's had a really good camp and tried to make a difference every time he's played," said the coach. "I love his aggressiveness. I didn't realize how aggressive he was as far as closing people out. He's very good at getting his shot through, which is very important whether it's a wrist shot or the bomb that he has for a slapshot. So he's been very impressive to me."

Edler likely safe with Ballard buyout pending | 07/03/2013 12:51 PM
NewsAlexander Edler is likely safe since the Vancouver Canucks plan to buy out defenseman Keith Ballard.
Darren Dreger on Twitter
ImpactBallard and the $8.4 million remaining on his contract were placed on unconditional waivers Wednesday. He's all but assured to be bought out by Friday's deadline, which means the Canucks won't have to save cap space by trying to trade Edler. It will be interesting to see how the 27-year-old defenseman adapts to the new system under coach John Tortorella, which didn't allow for much offense from defensemen in New York. Edler was one of the top fantasy blueliners in the league the last two years but may take a step back in his new role.
Alexander Edler could be dealt in off-season | 05/19/2013 9:14 AM
NewsAlexander Edler may be dealt in the off-season.
ImpactIf Edler was to be traded, it would have to happen before July 1 as his no-trade contract goes into effect at that time. The Canucks need help up front and have some nice depth on the blueline so it makes sense that Edler could be the odd man out in Vancouver.
IIHF suspends Edler for kneeing Eric Staal | 05/17/2013 11:49 AM
NewsAlexander Edler has been suspended by the IIHF for his knee-on-knee hit of Eric Staal.
ImpactEdler will be forced to miss the remainder of the 2013 World Championship for his "reckless" and "dangerous" actions. The IIHF Disciplinary Committee can choose to extend Edler's suspension if they wish, which would open the door to him missing part or all of the 2014 Winter Olympics. Meanwhile, Carolina Hurricanes fans just have to hope that Eric Staal's injury isn't as bad as it looked.
Should Edler be trade bait for the Canucks? | 05/11/2013 10:59 PM
NewsThe Vancouver Province's Jason Botchford thinks that the Canucks' best bet for a "reboot" is trading Alex Edler.
ImpactOf course, this is not easy because Edler in January signed a five-year, $30 million deal, and he took less to stay with the team in order to help them bring other players in. But Botchford says Vancouver's defense is a strength, and it has a number of young players ready to play bigger roles. Edler could be a nice chip to acquire some forward help -- and help them get bigger up front. Edler's no-trade clause doesn't start until July, so the Canucks have time to gauge the market, which Botchford thinks would include the Flyers and Ducks.
Alexander Edler: Penalties cost the Canucks | 05/08/2013 11:32 AM
NewsAlexander Edler cited a lack of discipline from the Vancouver Canucks when talking about what went wrong in the first round.
ImpactThe San Jose Sharks completed a four-game sweep of the Canucks on Tuesday. "At the end, their power play won them the series," Edler said. "We took too many penalties. Their power play scored a lot of goals, and even when they didn't score they got a lot of momentum from it. And when we did kill them, it still took a lot of energy out of us. They just have really good players on their power play." Vancouver committed 27 minor penalties over four games. To make matters worse, they had an abysmal 70.8 penalty-killing percentage.

Impact"Obviously I am disappointed I am suspended," Edler said after he watched the Canucks beat the Los Angeles Kings 1-0 at the Staples Center Saturday night. "I had no intention of making any contact with the goalie. I was going for the puck. The decision is made now. I have to look forward." Edler, who will complete his two-game suspension when the Canucks finish off their three-game road trip this afternoon in Denver, said he is proud of the way he has played the game. "I have been in the league for seven years and I think I have been a clean player," he said. "I haven't had a major penalty or anything."
