Matt Greene officially signs a four-year deal | 06/25/2014 10:01 AM
NewsMatt Greene's four-year contract with the Los Angeles Kings is official.
ImpactThe Kings are hoping that Greene's injury woes are behind him after he was limited to just 43 regular season games over the past two seasons. From a fantasy perspective, the 31-year-old defenseman's value is limited even when he is healthy. He will average about a penalty minute per game, but he's never recorded more than 15 points in a single season.
Matt Greene, Kings close to a four-year deal | 06/23/2014 2:43 PM
NewsMatt Greene has tentatively agreed to a four-year deal with the Los Angeles Kings.
ImpactThe contract isn't finalized yet, but it sounds like Greene won't end up testing the free agent market. The fact that it's a four-year extension is surprising given that a variety of injuries have limited him to 43 regular season games over the last two years. He was healthy for the Kings' Stanley Cup run, but his role in that was limited, as evidenced by the fact that he averaged just 15:53 minutes per game.
Greene might be a healthy scratch Saturday | 06/06/2014 2:55 PM
NewsWith Robyn Regehr likely to return on Saturday, Matt Greene could be a healthy scratch.
Helene Elliott on Twitter
ImpactGreene has been averaging just 13:51 minutes per contest in the playoffs, which puts him in dead last among Kings defensemen. He has three assists in 16 games.
Kings don't see themselves as favorites | 06/04/2014 9:29 AM
NewsThe Los Angeles Kings sidestepped the assertion that they're the favorites going into the Stanley Cup Final.
Impact"It's the Stanley Cup Finals. I don't think any team is going to look at themselves as the underdogs," Greene said. "You're down to two teams, and you want to win, and that's all it really comes down to. It's an exciting time of the year to be a part of it. I really don't care about what the odds say or what you guys are saying about who's favored and who's not." Greene's comments were largely echoed by his teammates. The Kings are typically regarded as the favorites to defeat the New York Rangers, but there's not big gap there.
Matt Greene has two assists in Game 7 | 06/02/2014 7:27 AM
NewsMatt Greene had a big game Sunday with two assists and a game-high six hits.
ImpactThe defenseman was also a plus-three in Game 7 but his status for the Stanley Cup Final may be up in the air as Robyn Regehr, who has been out of action since Game 1 of the Conference semi-final on May 3. Greene now has three assists in 15 games and is 17th in the NHL in hits with 46.
Kings current run more grounded in reality | 05/23/2014 9:30 AM
NewsIt's hard for the Los Angeles Kings to find parallels between their current playoff run and their 2012 Stanley Cup championship run.
ImpactTheir 2012 postseason bordered on the surreal. They were an eighth seed team that got off to 3-0 leads in each of their series and kept their defensive pairings and lines largely intact throughout that postseason. By comparison, the Kings needed seven games to eliminated the Sharks and Ducks this time around. They are tied 1-1 in the Western Conference Final with Chicago. "It's completely different," Matt Greene said of the two campaigns. "I don't think anybody would have thought that was going to happen in 2012. I think this is way more realistic of how teams get to this point in the series. It's hard fought series. You have to put that away."
Matt Greene a healthy scratch on Sunday | 05/19/2014 8:03 AM
NewsMatt Greene was a healthy scratch for Game 1 Sunday.
ImpactHe was replaced on the blueline by Willie Mitchell who returned from an undisclosed injury after missing Game 7 against the San Jose Sharks in the first round and all seven games in Round 2 versus Anaheim. Jeff Schultz seemed to have struggled on Sunday so do not be surprised if Greene is back in the lineup for Game 2 Wednesday against Chicago.

Matt Greene a minus-four on Sunday | 04/21/2014 7:25 AM
NewsMatt Greene was a minus-four on Sunday.
Los Angeles Times
ImpactThe Kings decided to put Greene in the lineup on Sunday as they went with seven defensemen and only 11 forwards but the move may have backfired as Greene did not have a good game. Stay tuned as it is likely he will be a healthy scratch on Tuesday as the Kings should go back to the traditional 12 forwards and six defensemen.

ImpactHe exited the ice with the rest of the Kings' regulars at the morning skate, which suggests that he could draw back into the fold after being a healthy scratch in the Kings' last eight games. Jake Muzzen may sit to make room for him.

NewsMatt Greene was a healthy scratch on Saturday.
Los Angeles Times
ImpactJust an FYI. Greene has two goals, five points and a plus-seven rating with 18 penalty minutes in 24 games. He missed plenty of action earlier in the season with an upper body injury and was a healthy scratch subsequent to that as coach Darryl Sutter did not want to change a winning lineup.

NewsKings coach Darryl Sutter was noncommittal when it came to the possibility of using Matt Greene on Saturday.

NewsMatt Greene (upper body) is healthy enough to return, but won't Tuesday.
ImpactKings coach Darryl Sutter didn't go into detail as to his reasoning, but it's probably because the Kings are riding a three-game winning streak. Greene has two goals and three points in 15 games this season.

ImpactThe Kings have only six healthy defensemen so expect a call up from Manchester of the AHL soon if Greene is unable to go. Greene has two goals and three points in 15 games. He missed all but five games last season with back problems.
Matt Greene is too 'banged up' to practice | 11/06/2013 4:10 PM
NewsMatt Greene missed Wednesday's practice due to an undisclosed injury.
Impact"Matt Greene's banged up," Kings coach Darryl Sutter said. "It's like Mystery Valley for me. It goes from legs to limbs to head. I don't know what you'd call it, if it's maintenance." It sounds like Greene's injury isn't significant based on Sutter's comments.
Matt Greene scores Saturday | 10/20/2013 8:04 AM
NewsMatt Greene scored his second goal of the season Saturday.
ImpactIt was a big fantasy night for Greene, especially if you play the hits category as he had eight hits to tie Dustin Brown on the night and well as an assist. His big night continued with four blocked shots. Greene now has two goals and three points in nine games and has 31 hits in nine games.
Matt Greene had off season surgery | 09/09/2013 7:26 AM
NewsMatt Greene had off-season surgery to remove a staph infection from his elbow.
ImpactIt was a tough year for the defenseman who had back surgery in January after suffering a herniated disc in the Kings first game of the season. He returned in April and managed to play five regular season games and nine in playoffs where he had two assists. Greene is a solid blueliner but he does not score enough to take him in fantasy pools. He is good to go in training camp that begins this week.
Kings lean on playoff experience | 06/06/2013 11:10 AM
NewsMatt Greene talked about how the team's playoff experience benefits them.
Impact"Experience helps, you know," Greene said. "A lot of guys, been in Western Conference Finals before. Pretty much our whole team has. Now it's just time to deliver on that, use that experience to help us out." The Kings obviously won the Stanley Cup last year and the vast majority of their players returned for the 2013 campaign. That's probably helped them endure with nothing coming easy for Los Angeles in their current playoff run.
Matt Greene gives Kings' D a shot in the arm | 05/24/2013 7:13 PM
NewsMatt Greene reminded his teammates of his importance in Game 5 of the Kings' second-round series with the Sharks.
ImpactThe reargard played in Game 4, his first action in 26 days after dealing with an undisclosed injury, but it was more of a feeling-out process. Game 5 was a different story as he was physical -- he had four hits and continuously cleared traffic from the crease -- and received important penalty-kill ice time. "When he comes back, I think the things that you don't see - the leadership in the dressing room, that powerful voice, I think - all year we missed him," Mike Richards said. "On the ice, too, just how physical he plays and how hard he is to play against."

Los Angeles Daily News
ImpactThat he was not happy impressed coach Darryl Sutter. "It's good that he challenges himself," Sutter said. "That's the best way. That's how he plays, right? He wants to get better. He played one game, quite honest. He's played one game since (the Kings won the Stanley Cup last June). The game he played he was probably hurt five shifts in(to it). So, he's really played one game this season. In a year." Greene is a solid blueliner who will not help you in traditional fantasy pools.
