Tomas Vokoun sharp in double-OT loss | 05/20/2013 2:37 AM
NewsTomas Vokoun allowed two goals on 48 shots Sunday in a 2-1 double-overtime loss to the Senators.
ImpactDespite being saddled with a loss Vokoun was excellent in this contest, a vast improvement over his play in a Game Two victory. The loss is the first blemish against his otherwise perfect record in the playoffs and it will be interesting to see whether coach Dan Bylsma tabs Vokoun for the Game Four start rather than return to Marc-Andre Fleury.
Vokoun wins but not sharp Friday | 05/18/2013 1:22 PM
NewsDespite being the winning goalie in the Penguins' 4-3 victory over the Senators Friday night, Tomas Vokoun did not play particularly well.
ImpactMany hold the view that Ottawa's first two goals were soft. Kyle Turris' goal went between Vokoun's legs and Colin Greening beat the Pens' goalie on the short side. Vovoun later rallied to make two outstanding stops on Sens' breakways. It remains to be seen if Pittsburgh coach Dan Bylsma will give Marc-Andre Fleury an opportunity to play in the second round against the Sens.
Vokoun not at his best, but Pens still win | 05/17/2013 10:26 PM
NewsTomas Vokoun made 19 saves in Pittsburgh's 4-3 win against Ottawa in Game 2 of their semifinal series Friday night.
ImpactVokoun made some key saves, but this really was not his finest effort as he looked shaky at times. He allowed a goal in each period. This performance could crack the door open a bit for Marc-Andre Fleury to get another opportunity, though the fact Vokoun has won his four playoff starts should matter more in the big picture. Vokoun has a 1.70 goals-against average and .945 percentage in the postseason. The Penguins take a 2-0 series lead into Ottawa for Game 3 on Sunday night.

ImpactJust in case there was any doubt. Vokoun has a 1.28 GAA and .962 save percentage in three playoff starts. Until he has a bad game, Marc-Andre Fleury isn't likely to get a shot at redemption.
Tomas Vokoun stops 35 shots, Pens win Game 1 | 05/14/2013 10:30 PM
NewsTomas Vokoun turned aside 35 of the 36 shots he faced in a 4-1 win over Ottawa to begin the second round where he left off against the New York Islanders.
ImpactHe has won three straight playoff games since taking over as the Penguins' starter goaltender for Marc-Andre Fleury. Vokoun has been very steady in three straight starts, so there's no reason to believe that Fleury will return to game action any time soon. We would expect to see Vokoun back in goal for Pittsburgh when the puck drops for Game 2 on Friday.
Tomas Vokoun confirms he is Game 1 starter | 05/14/2013 11:41 AM
NewsTomas Vokoun says he is starting Tuesday night against the Senators.

ImpactIt's the right call. Until Vokoun gives coach Dan Bylsma a reason to change his mind, the Penguins need to stick with him. He is 2-0 with a 1.41 goals-against average and .957 save percentage in the playoffs. Dating back to the regular season, he's also won his last five starts.
Penguins coach doesn't name starter for Gm 1 | 05/13/2013 5:13 PM
NewsPittsburgh coach Dan Bylsma wouldn't discuss his Game 1 lineup for Tuesday's semifinal series against Ottawa, so he wouldn't name a starting goalie.
ImpactHowever, it's probably safe to assume that Tomas Vokoun will be back between the pipes. He provided the team with superb goaltending against an Islanders team that buzzed all over the Penguins in the first round. Vokoun stopped 66 of the 69 shots he faced in a pair of wins to close out the series. It would be a surprising move if Bylsma decided to go back to Marc-Andre Fleury.
Tomas Vokoun makes 35 saves in 4-3 OT win | 05/11/2013 10:22 PM
NewsTomas Vokoun made 35 saves in the Penguins' 4-3 overtime victory against the Islanders on Saturday night.
ImpactVokoun was much busier than his counterpart Evgeni Nabokov in this one, and you have to wonder if the result would've been the same had Marc-Andre Fleury been between the pipes because the Islanders were buzzing for much of this game. Vokoun faced 28 shots through the first two periods. We see no reason for Pens coach Dan Bylsma to turn to Fleury in the next series, until Vokoun gives him a reason to. Vokoun has now won his last five starts, including the regular season.

ImpactNothing has been confirmed and the Pens are still practising Saturday morning so we do not yet know which of Vokoun or Fleury will leave the ice first. We would be surprised if Pens' coach Dan Bylsma went back to Fleury after Vokoun posted a shutout victory. Stay tuned.
Nerves didn't get the best of Tomas Vokoun | 05/10/2013 11:47 AM
NewsTomas Vokoun admits he was nervous heading into his start for Game 5.
ImpactHe looked like he was at ease in the crease though with 31 saves on 31 shots in a 4-0 win for Pittsburgh. "It obviously feels good," said Vokoun after getting the victory in his first playoff appearance since 2007. "I was a little bit nervous the whole day, to be honest. You wouldn't be human if you weren't. It was hard to remember what to expect. I got a couple of fortunate bounces." The Islanders outshout Pittsburgh by a 14-7 margin after the first period, but thanks to Vokoun's efforts the game remained scoreless. The Penguins scored three goals in the second and one in the third to claim a 3-2 series lead.
Tomas Vokoun shuts out Isles in Game 5 | 05/09/2013 10:19 PM
NewsTomas Vokoun blocked all 31 shots he faced in a 4-0 win over the Islanders Thursday night.
ImpactStepping in for the ineffective Marc-Andre Fleury, Vokoun answered every challenge in this start and help propel the Penguins to a 3-2 series lead. There's no question Vokoun will be in goal again when the two teams match up for Game Six Saturday.

Impact"We brought Tomas Vokoun in to play big games for us," Penguins coach Dan Bylsma. Well, they brought him in to take some of the pressure off of Marc-Andre Fluery and replace Fluery should he falter - which he has. Fluery looked abysmal by the end of Game 4 and basically forced the Penguins to go to their Plan B. Vokoun had a 0.90 GAA and .970 save percentage in four games against the Islanders in the regular season, so there is reason for Penguins' fans to be optimistic about this news.
Will the Penguins turn to Vokoun for Game 5? | 05/08/2013 10:03 AM
NewsCoach Dan Bylsma wouldn't commit to naming a starter for Game 5 on Thursday, but Pittsburgh-Tribune Review columnist Dejan Kovacevic believes it's time for the Penguins to turn to Tomas Vokoun.
ImpactMarc-Andre Fluery has allowed 14 goals on 102 shots over his past three games against the New York Islanders and he's permitted a whopping 40 goals in his last 10 playoff appearances. Vokoun was brought on board by the Penguins to ease Fleury's workload in the regular season, but his secondary purpose according to Kovacevic was to serve as a "Plan B" option in the playoffs. Bylsma appears to be considering a change and he spoke highly of Vokoun after Tuesday's 6-4 loss, where Fleury looked particularly shaky on some plays. "Certainly, Tomas Vokoun is a guy that can step in and play and has had success and won hockey games against this team, was successful this year," said Bylsma. "We're going to come out for Game 5 with a refocus." This doesn't confirm a change in goal, but there are probably many people who wouldn't be surprised if it happens.

Tomas Vokoun earns his 2nd straight shutout | 03/30/2013 3:48 PM
NewsTomas Vokoun turned aside all 35 Islanders shots in his second consecutive shutout.
ImpactAmazingly, the Penguins have now gone three straight games without allowing a goal. They've also won 15 consecutive contests despite enduring injuries to a number of key players over that span. NewsTomas Vokoun stopped all 20 shots he faced en route to a 4-0 shutout win over Winnipeg Thursday.
ImpactVokoun was hardly tested on this night as the 14th straight Pittsburgh victory was one of the easier ones during the streak. With Marc-Andre Fleury day-to-day with a neck injury, Vokoun would gobble up any starting assignments that become available.

NewsPenguins coach Dan Bylsma wasn't happy with the way his team played Friday, but credited Tomas Vokoun for keeping them in it.
ImpactThe Isles had the game's first 12 shots on goal in their 4-2 loss, and Vokoun stopped 33 of 35 in the game. "Obviously, we were outplayed tonight," Penguins coach Dan Bylsma said. "They took it to us. We were fortunate to get some big saves from Vokoun." The netminder has allowed four goals over his last three starts.

Tomas Vokoun wins fourth game in a row | 03/17/2013 3:09 PM
NewsAll of a sudden, Tomas Vokoun is starting to look like the valuable backup people were hoping for.
ImpactAfter allowing six goals in the first victory in his four-game winning streak, Vokoun had a shutout and two one-goal games to indicate that he's heating up. Still, he's not getting a ton of reps as this was his first start in a week. If he can wrestle a few more starts from Marc-Andre Fleury, he could be well worth having. Right now he's just so-so in deeper leagues, though.
Tomas Vokoun backstops Pens to win over Isles | 03/10/2013 9:43 PM
NewsTomas Vokoun allowed just one goal on 24 shots Sunday as the Penguins clobbered the Islanders by a score of 6-1.

ImpactVokoun has made the most of his opportunities this season as the Pittsburgh Penguins' number two goaltender. Vokoun might be the league's best backup netminder and should continue to see his fair share of starts to keep Marc-Andr Fleury well rested for the playoffs. Vokoun should obviously be owned by every Fleury owner as a handcuff but he's also a very nice option as a third goaltender in every league.
Vokoun gives up goal on a tough bounce | 02/04/2013 12:45 PM
NewsTomas Vokoun was beaten on a bizarre play on Sunday.
ImpactCapitals defenseman John Carlson dumped the puck into the Penguins zone from center ice, so Vokoun left the net to play it. However, the puck bounced off the boards and into the empty net. "Now, looking back, it's easy to say maybe I should wait until you can see where it's going to hit on the glass," he said. "It's a tough bounce. You freeze, and there's nothing you can do." At the time it tied the game at 2, but Pittsburgh still ended up winning 6-3.
Tomas Vokoun gets third win of 2013 | 02/03/2013 4:35 PM
NewsTomas Vokoun continues to make the most of his opportunities this season, collecting his third win of 2013 as the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Washington Capitals 6-3.
ImpactVokoun is now 3-1-0 on the season. His numbers weren't great on Sunday (three goals allowed on 24 shots), yet the Penguins must feel immensely confident whenever they decide to give Marc-Andre Fleury a breather - or a kick in the pants. One cannot help but wonder if Vokoun has some serious trade value too, though.

Tomas Vokoun shuts out the Rangers | 02/01/2013 1:28 AM
NewsTomas Vokoun turned aside all 28 shots he faced in a 3-0 blanking of the New York Rangers Thursday.
ImpactThe goose egg was his first of the season and it lifted his record to 2-1-0. Marc-Andre Fleury has had some consistency issues early into this year but he still is not in danger his starting gig to Vokoun. However, if you have Fleury, it would be a good idea to hedge your bets and use Vokoun as a handcuff.

He just might end up getting more playing time than your typical number two goaltender.
Tomas Vokoun not focused on Fleur's job | 01/14/2013 2:51 PM
NewsTomas Vokoun is focused on being part of a winning team and not on supplanting Marc-Andre Fleury for the team's starter role.
Impact"I knew exactly what I was signing myself up for," Vokoun said. "This wasn't about being the starting goalie or statistics. This was about the bigger picture. I wanted to come somewhere that had a winning environment. I probably had better individual opportunities with other teams, but this was the place for me. This is a place where you can win." Fleury and Vokoun appear to be getting along already and they should co-exist nicely in Pittsburgh. Coach Dan Bylsma has already confirmed that Fluery is his number one netminder and he'll be between the pipes on opening day. Vokoun will probably also see his fair share of starts to keep Fleury well rested for the playoffs.
