NewsThe Winnipeg Jets have decided to release Ian White from his professional tryout offer.
ImpactWhite is coming off of a rough season and wasn't able to secure a contract over the summer. All the same, White is capable of being a solid defenseman that can contribute offensively. ImpactHe produced four points in 25 games and was a healthy scratch for 18 games. He's looking to make the best of his tryout deal with the Winnipeg Jets. "Your mindset's gotta be that you're going to fight for a job, and show you deserve to be here and can help the team win," White said. "I know I have a lot of game left. NewsIan White will attend Winnipeg Jets training camp on a pro tryout offer.
ImpactThe 29 year-old defenseman will look to rebound after a disappointing 2013 campaign where he tallied just four points in 25 games. The Jets blue line is already pretty crowded with right shooting defensemen but White's above average puck carrying skills and shot could help the power play.

ImpactWhite was thought to be a vital member of the Red Wings defensive corps going into the 2013 season but was a healthy scratch the last nine games of the regular season and did not play in any of Detroit's 14 playoff games. The defenseman is only 28, so he should find employment somewhere in the NHL as he does have offensive skills that are good enough for regular employment in the league.

ImpactWhite is scheduled to be a healthy scratch for a fifth straight game on Thursday, but he hasn't asked for a trade. "No, we're not there yet. We're not there yet," White said. "But I was just voicing this is game five, and you play so many games in such a fast period that it can get away from you pretty quick. You look, after the weekend, it'll be seven straight games if you don't play. And for (Babcock's) sake, where do I fit? And for him, we have (Carlo) Colaiacovo coming back right away, too. So you just try to get a determination of where (Babcock) thinks you fit and where Ken thinks you fit -- now and going forward, as well." White, who is capable of being a solid offensive defenseman, has just two points in 14 games this season.

I work as hard as I can every night. Maybe I don't have the stats this year that I've had in the past, but I feel I'm working hard and playing the same way I always have." The Wings will welcome back Brendan Smith and Kyle Quincey to the lineup against Los Angeles, but their return comes at the expense of White and Kent Huskins. ImpactWhite suffered the injury on Jan. 22 and the worry still is that the laceration will re-open if his knee bends too much. The Red Wings are having plenty of trouble this season with most stemming from the retirement of Nicklas Lidstrom, so they could really use White back on the point. He is worth putting in your lineup as soon as he is healthy enough to play.

Ian White the frontrunner for PP spot | 01/13/2013 10:01 AM
NewsAs of this moment, Ian White appears to be the frontrunner for a role alongside Niklas Kronwall on the Red Wings top power play unit.
ImpactThe retirement of Nicklas Lidstrom has created a void that presents itself as an opportunity for a number of Detroit blue liners, including Brendan Smith and Carlo Colaiacovo. It seems White will get the first crack at minutes with the top unit, however the youngster Smith will likely grow into the role as he gains more NHL experience.
