Ward says Canes 'just weren't good enough' | 04/29/2013 3:41 PM
NewsCam Ward doesn't think his knee injury was the reason for Carolina's No. 26 finish in the league's overall standings.
Raleigh News & Observer
Impact"There's other areas where we just weren't good enough," Ward said. "I guess it was bad timing but you had Justin Faulk go down, you had Joni (Pitkanen) go down, you can go down the list. At the end of the day it wasn't good enough." He appeared in 17 games before suffering a season-ending knee injury on March 3rd. Dan Ellis and Justin Peters started 16 games apiece in 2013, but as expected none of them was able to match the numbers that Ward put up during his 16 starts.
Carolina places Cam Ward (knee) on IR | 03/04/2013 7:00 PM
NewsCam Ward has been placed on injured reserve by the Hurricanes.
ImpactThe move isn't surprising after it was announced this morning that Ward will miss six-to-eight weeks with a third-degree sprain of his MCL. He won't require surgery but the loss of their top goaltender will be hard on the Hurricanes. Carolina will count on backup Dan Ellis and minor-league call-up Justin Peters for now.
Cam Ward will miss 6-8 weeks with MCL injury | 03/04/2013 11:39 AM
NewsThe Hurricanes announced Monday that Cam Ward will be sidelined for six-to-eight weeks because of a third-degree sprain of the medial collateral ligament (MCL).
ImpactHe won't need to undergo surgery, which may be the only silver lining in this. Look for Carolina to recall Justin Peters, who could battle Dan Ellis for playing time, during Ward's absence. Ward has posted a 9-6-1 record with a .908 save percentage and a 2.84 GAA this campaign.
Cam Ward leaves game after collision | 03/03/2013 8:46 PM
NewsCarolina goaltender Cam Ward left Sunday's contest against the Panthers in the second period after being involved in a collision with teammate Justin Faulk.
Carolina Hurricanes on Twitter
ImpactThe fact he was forced from the game and had to be replaced by backup Dan Ellis certainly isn't a good sign, but we don't want to speculate about his condition without any official word from the team. We'll pass along more information as it becomes available.
Looks like Cam Ward vs. Scott Clemmensen | 03/03/2013 6:50 PM
NewsQuick goalie note: it looks like Cam Ward will take on Scott Clemmensen in Sunday's game between the Carolina Hurricanes and Florida Panthers.
ImpactSome wondered if Jacob Markstrom might get the start amid Jose Theodore's injury, but for at least tonight, Clemmensen will receive the nod. Carolina dominated Florida on Saturday, so we'll see if there's a repeat or revenge for the Panthers.
Ward earns his third win in last four starts | 03/02/2013 10:45 PM
NewsCam Ward saved 22 of 24 shots in a 6-2 win Saturday night.
ImpactCarolina jumped out to a 3-0 lead before the 10 minute mark, so Ward had a lot of breathing room. He has now won three of his last four starts, giving him a 8-6-1 record this season.
Cam Ward likely starter v Panthers Saturday | 03/02/2013 10:50 AM
NewsWe expect Cam Ward to start in goal Saturday in a divisional showdown with Florida.
ImpactAlthough Dan Ellis has played well this season, Canes coach Kirk Muller will likely tap Ward on the shoulder for this one.
Cam Ward starting to round into form? | 03/01/2013 10:31 AM
NewsCanes coach Kirk Muller is very happy with the play of Cam Ward.
Raleigh News & Observer
ImpactCarolina will score enough to win most games, so Ward remains the big x-factor for this team. Thus far, he's had a rough year, but he's been very solid over his last three starts, allowing six goals altogether. "He's focused right now," Muller said. "When he plays like that he's up there with the elite goalies. He was competing tonight. I thought he was mentally prepared. He had three solid periods."
Cam Ward enjoys rare strong effort in win | 02/28/2013 11:35 PM
NewsCam Ward was solid against the Penguins, stopping 26 of 27 shots in a 4-1 win Thursday night.
ImpactWard has had a rough go of it for much of the season, but his track record is long enough for us to believe he'll rebound. His record improves to 7-6-1 on the season with the victory.
Cam Ward strong in 3-0 loss vs. Capitals | 02/26/2013 11:01 PM
NewsCam Ward was good in Tuesday's 3-0 loss to Washington.
ImpactHe turned aside 37 of 40 shots in the defeat for an impressive .925 save percentage. His record fell to 6-6-1 on the year with the loss though. Ward has battled consistency issues all season.
Cam Ward is expected to get the start Tuesday | 02/26/2013 3:40 PM
NewsCam Ward will likely start in goal Tuesday night against the Washington Capitals.
Raleigh News & Observer
ImpactWard has been all over the map this season with a 3.16 GAA and .898 save percentage. Despite the Canes' offensive production, their near-.500 record has been due in large part to sub-par goaltending. Fantasy owners can do better than Ward right now, but for those in deeper formats or leagues with goalie start minimums, he still has a legitimate shot at getting a win almost every night.
Cam Ward has 23-save night in win | 02/24/2013 10:48 PM
NewsCam Ward blocked 23 shots in the Hurricanes' 4-2 victory over the Islanders on Sunday night.
ImpactCarolina has really been up and down in terms of its offensive production, but it really could have a better record than 10-7-1 with more steady goaltending like this. Even with the solid effort, Ward has just a 3.27 goals-against average and .896 save percentage on the year.
Cam Ward torched in loss to Jets | 02/21/2013 11:09 PM
NewsCam Ward allowed four goals on 23 shots Thursday as the Hurricanes were beaten at home by Winnipeg by a score of 4-3.
ImpactIt wasn't the greatest of nights for Ward, although the game didn't get out of hand until the final period when Winnipeg scored three of their four goals on the game. The loss drops Ward's record to 5-5-1 on the campaign and pushes his save percentage below .900.
Cam Ward struggles in lost Monday | 02/18/2013 11:14 PM
NewsCam Ward stopped 23 of 26 shots in the Hurricanes' 3-0 loss to the Montreal Canadiens Monday night.
ImpactThe Canes lose 3-0 and Ward lets in a shot from the red line. In a word, ouch! The former Conn Smythe Trophy winner had been great of late following a tough start to the lockout-shortened season but is now 5-4-1 on the year.
Cam Ward defends 26 shots in win over Devils | 02/12/2013 10:51 PM
NewsCam Ward made 26 stops in Tuesday's 4-2 win over New Jersey.
ImpactWard has been great of late following a tough start to the lockout-shortened season. He has won four of his past five outings, with his only loss coming in overtime to Philadelphia. He helped boost his save percentage to .902, but he still has some work to do to improve his 3.22 GAA.
Cam Ward expected to start again Tuesday | 02/12/2013 5:55 PM
NewsCam Ward is expected to start in net again Tuesday after stopping 24 shots in the Carolina Hurricanes' 6-4 win Monday.
ImpactTuesday will mark Ward's fifth straight start as the Carolina netminder has begun to turn things around. Ward is 3-0-1 in his last four starts and is starting to resemble the Conn Smythe winner fantasy owners drafted. Now, if only the Hurricanes could stop allowing a league-leading 36 shots per game.
Cam Ward gets win on Monday | 02/12/2013 12:40 AM
NewsCam Ward made 24 saves in the Hurricanes' 6-4 win over the Islanders Monday night.
ImpactWard owners were tempted to hit the panic button after a few subpar performances earlier in the season but his record now stands at 4-3-1 on the year. The former Conn Smythe winner deserves to be started everytime he's between the pipes as Carolina should be better this season.
Cam Ward, Canes drop OT decision to Flyers | 02/09/2013 5:10 PM
NewsCam Ward defended 28 of 32 shots in a 4-3 OT loss to Philadelphia on Saturday.
ImpactThe Carolina keeper had been marvelous in his past two outings versus Toronto and Ottawa, but he didn't look as strong against the Flyers. The overtime defeat was his first loss outside of regulation this year and it brings his record to 3-3-1.
Cam Ward likely starter v Philly Saturday | 02/09/2013 11:13 AM
NewsLook for Cam Ward to be between the pipes Saturday afternoon against the Flyers.
ImpactWard rebounded from a number of sub par games with a terrific effort Thursday against the Senators and should be rewarded with a start against Philly.
Cam Ward turning his season around? | 02/08/2013 10:08 AM
NewsCam Ward's efforts in the second period were key to Carolina's 3-2 win Thursday night against the Senators.
Raleigh News & Observer
ImpactWard was simply brilliant, making 16 saves as Carolina was outshot 17-3. "Cam's a great goaltender and he keeps us in games," said Jay Harrison, who banged home the deciding. "He's a huge part of our success and we owe that to him." Ward was shaky to start the year, but he's found his groove over the past two very busy games. He has made 86 of 89 saves in that span.
Cam Ward stops 45 in OT victory over Senators | 02/08/2013 12:53 AM
NewsCam Ward made 40-plus saves for a second straight game in Carolina's 3-2 overtime win over Ottawa.
ImpactHe turned aside 45 of 47 shots Thursday after he blocked 41 of 42 versus Toronto on Monday. Ward has been great in his past two outings and they have helped him get back to an overall record of 3-3-0.
Cam Ward solid in win Monday | 02/04/2013 11:21 PM
NewsCam Ward stopped 41 of 42 shots in the Hurricanes' 4-1 win over the Maple Leafs Monday night.
ImpactWard owners who were ready to hit the panic button after a few subpar performances from the former Conn Smythe Trophy winner can breathe a sigh of relief for now. Moreover, Ward still deserves to be started everytime he's between the pipes as Carolina should be better this season. He's still an elite goaltender.
Cam Ward still trying to shake off the rust | 01/29/2013 7:55 AM
NewsCam Ward is frustrated with his rusty start to the 2013 campaign, but he feels like he is working his way back into game shape.
Raleigh News & Observer
Impact"Obviously it's been a tough adjustment with the long layoff and a frustrating process," Ward said after allowing four goals in Monday's loss to Boston. "I expect myself to be up to my potential right off the bat, and it's been hard. I thought tonight was the best I've felt in the first few games, and I just have to keep working at it." He has surrendered eight goals in the four first periods he has played this season, but that sharpness should return with time. Ward managed to turn his game around last season despite some struggles and we think he'll do the same this year as well.
Cam Ward gets saddled with loss Monday | 01/28/2013 11:22 PM
NewsCam Ward allowed four goals on 37 shots in a 5-3 loss to the Boston Bruins Monday night.
ImpactIt's been quite the struggle for Ward so far in this 48-game shortened season. The former Conn Smythe Trophy winner was also shaky last season but it was partly due to the mediocre defense that was in front of him. However, the Canes should be better this season and Ward still deserves a spot on your fantasy roster.
Cam Ward registers first win over Sabres | 01/24/2013 11:57 PM
NewsCam Ward stopped 30 of 33 shots to earn his first win of the season, which was a 6-3 drubbing of the Sabres.
ImpactWhile most any NHL-caliber goaltender should be able to earn a victory if his teammates scores six times, the win is a step in the right direction nonetheless for panicky Ward owners.
Cam Ward will get the nod against Sabres | 01/24/2013 3:09 PM
NewsCam Ward will be between the pipes for Carolina on Thursday against Buffalo.
Chip Alexander on Twitter
ImpactWard has gotten off to a horrid start this season with a .789 save percentage and a 6.00 goals-against average in a pair of losses. He'll be looking for something positive against the Sabres.
Cam Ward drops second straight game | 01/22/2013 11:22 PM
NewsCam Ward allowed four goals on 26 shots in a 4-1 loss to Tampa Bay Tuesday night.
ImpactWard owners are likely ready to hit the panic button after two subpar efforts from the former Conn Smythe Trophy winner to begin the season, but we're preaching patience. Given his track record, Ward deserves the benefit of the doubt at this point.
Cam Ward seeks redemption vs. Lightning | 01/22/2013 10:18 AM
NewsCam Ward will be back between the pipes for Carolina on Tuesday night when the Hurricanes play their home opener against Tampa Bay.
Raleigh News & Observer
ImpactWard was pulled after the first period at Florida after he permitted four goals on just 12 shots, with three coming by way of the power play. "I think what's important is that (Ward) bounces back mentally," coach Kirk Muller said. "Rolls up the sleeves, gets ready, works through this.... He's the first to say, 'I wasn't good' and that's OK. The key is how you respond." Look for Ward to redeem himself against a tired Tampa Bay team that dropped a 4-3 decision to the Islanders on Monday afternoon.
Cam Ward allows four goals Saturday | 01/20/2013 1:08 AM
NewsCam Ward kicked out only eight of 12 shots in a 5-1 loss Saturday night.
ImpactDan Ellis replaced Ward and went on to stop 12 of 13 shots. Don't read too much into Ward's rough start. The Carolina Hurricanes and Ward should bounce back as the season drags on.
Cam Ward glad to be back after lockout | 01/08/2013 12:07 PM
NewsCam Ward received the day he had been hoping for on Monday when players were permitted to once again use the team facilities for the first time since the old CBA expired on Sept. 15.
Raleigh News & Observer
Impact"It's the day we've kind of been hoping for since this lockout began, just to be able to come back in your own dressing room and get back on the ice knowing there's going to be a season," Ward said. "I'm just excited that it's over and we're back at it." Ward didn't head overseas during the work stoppage, but he remained in shape in Raleigh while skating three times a week at Raleigh Center Ice.
