|Assets:||Can play a sound defensive game, log big minutes and also be used in a shutdown role. Moves the puck well out of the defensive zone. Has loads of hockey sense. Can also be used in an offensive role, if required.|
|Flaws:||Isn't a physical defenseman, which somewhat limits his effectiveness against big NHL forwards. Is also a limited contributor in the offensive zone and not a natural with the man advantage. Lacks ideal size.|
|Career Potential:||Savvy big-minute shutdown defenseman.|

NewsWith Alex Edler out of the Canucks' lineup due to a knee injury, Dan Hamhuis saw a boost in responsibility.
ImpactHamhuis picked up an assist in the overtime victory, but it was his appearance in 69.3 percent of the Canucks' power-play opportunities that was the eye catching stat. He also garnered the most ice-time among all Vancouver blue-liners as he clocked out while registering a whopping 29:36. If Edler is sidelined for an extended period of time, look for Hamhuis to be his primary replacement.

NewsDan Hamhuis was the lone scorer for the Canucks in their lopsided 5-1 loss to the Kings on Saturday night.
ImpactHamhuis doesn't have tremendous offensive upside and has never scored at a very high clip, but he's a decent all-around contributor. The goal was his third in four games, to go along with two penalty minutes, two hits, two blocked shots and a minus-one rating. Kevin Bieksa and Ryan Kesler had the helpers. As HNIC's Elliotte Friedman noted, with the game out of hand and a tilt in Anaheim on Sunday, the Sedins played just two shifts in the third period.

Hamhuis may represent Canada at Olympics | 08/27/2013 5:16 PM
NewsDan Hamhuis could end up patrolling Canada's blueline at the Winter Olympics.
Impact"I've always enjoyed the international game," Hamhuis said. "I love the big ice. I love the room. It's a puck-possession game on that big ice and it's a challenge to defend but I enjoy that. I've been working a lot on my skating. I've been trying every year to become a better skater. With all that room, you have to have guys who can skate. Hopefully, I can fill that role." Duncan Keith is probably the only lock to play for Canada who shoots left handed, so Hamhuis could squeeze into the picture there. Other left-handed Canadian hopefuls include Jay Bouwmeester, Marc Staal, Marc-Edouard Vlasic, Marc Methot, Dion Phaneuf and Karl Alzner.

ImpactHamhuis is likely day-to-day but you never know with groin injuries. It is one injury that comes up a lot during shortened and compressed seasons but of course the season has yet to start. Be a bit wary of Hamhuis and we suggest not drafting him high at this time despite his 37 points last season and back to back plus-29 ratings.
