Williams affected by Carter's return | 12/03/2013 5:20 AM
NewsJustin Williams has quietly been affected by the return of Jeff Carter back into the Kings' roster.
ImpactWhen Jeff Carter was sidelined for 10 games with a foot injury, Williams recorded eight points along with 25 shots on goal, all while garnering a whopping 52.7 percent share of the Kings' power play opportunities. Since Carter's return on Nov. 25th, Williams has registered just two points along with 10 shots on goal in four contests. The biggest difference has been the power play time, as he's been relegated to appearing in just 29.7 percent of the Kings' man advantage chances during this span as he's garnering mostly second unit power play time alongside Dustin Brown and Jarret Stoll instead of his usual spot alongside Anze Kopitar. Williams' owners should monitor this situation closely, as he could spell trouble down the track. If you can manage to send a "sneaky" offer to get him off your roster, it just might be a smart idea.

ImpactThe goal was Williams 500th career point in the NHL and it was his second goal of the season as Anze Kopitar set him up. "It doesn't mean too much right now, but I'm sure as I look back on my career it will take on a special meaning," Williams said. "This sport has given me so much, and to dwell on things like that right now takes away from what we are trying to do as a team. I'll have plenty of time to reflect down the road."

NewsFormerly thought of as an injury-prone player, Kings winger Justin Williams has become a consistent presence in the Los Angeles lineup over the past two seasons.
ImpactWilliams has not missed a regular season or playoff game over the past two years and notably played through a separated shoulder during the 2013 postseason. Linemate Dustin Brown praises Williams for his hard work, saying "I think when you look at people, I mean you look at [Anze Kopitar]'s stats - a big reason why he's getting the numbers he's getting is [Williams]. Even though [Williams] has not maybe been getting the assists or the points or the goals that he wants, he's creating havoc in front of the net." It has been an interesting career resurgence for a player whose fortunes looked bleak before coming to the West Coast.

ImpactWilliams proved once again that he's a clutch player, as he now has five goals in four career Game 7's. His goals came within three minutes of each other in the second period, and he almost notched the hat trick just minutes later before Antti Niemi robbed him. The Kings offense struggled at times this series, but if Williams and the rest of the Kings' top players can step up moving forward, this team will be very scary. Slava Voynov continued his impressive postseason with two assists in the win.

NewsJustin Williams said the Los Angeles Kings need more offense from their top players.
Los Angeles Daily News

"Plain and simple, your guys who produced during the year need to produce just as much, if not more, during the playoffs." Williams has just two points in the playoffs -- a goal and an assist -- and nothing in the three games against San Jose. The Kings have a 2-1 series lead but have scored just seven goals in the three games. While Mike Richards and Jeff Carter each have three points in the series, regular-season scoring leader Anze Kopitar hasn't registered a point since May 8 and is likely one of the people Williams is not-so-subtly addressing.

Los Angeles Daily News
ImpactWilliams deflected a Mike Richards shot a little over eight minutes into the third period, but the goal was reviewed by Toronto to make sure it wasn't deflected above the crossbar. "I was in front of the net," Williams said. "I felt it was much below my shoulders. At the same time, it was called a goal on the ice and at that point it's really hard to overturn something. So, I was certain it was good, yeah."

Los Angeles Times
Impact"He's always trying to do everything he can," Sutter said. "Sometimes it's better for Willy not to do too much, just do a little bit less, and Brownie (linemate Dustin Brown) will get like that too. Where he will lose his identity once in awhile and you've got to reinforce that."

NewsJustin Williams has only one goal and two points in seven games this season.
ImpactHe has dropped to the third line and while coach Darryl Sutter wasn't necessarily calling him or his teammates out, he is not happy with their play. "Sometimes, he just has to slow it down a little bit," Sutter said. "Simon goes in and out during games. It's an issue with two or three of our older guys. They can't go in or out during games, or else we're better off playing younger guys that are learning it. The whole thing - and again, I'm not singling Gagne or Willie out or anybody like that - but hey, this is a totally different team, quite honest, when you're playing those kids on defense. It totally changes how your team has to play, or what you're trying to do. So it puts a lot more onus on that veteran group to be consistent. If they're not, then you're just going to struggle with it. It's really not that hard to figure out."
