|Assets:||Was one of the best standing in front of the net to tip in point shots. Had underrated playmaking skills. Went to the net with vigor and scored the majority of his goals due to supreme determination. Always led by example.|
|Flaws:||His style of play often led to a lot of injuries. Didn't have enough of a shot to be an elite goal-scoring winger. Wasn't as dangerous later on in his career, mainly because he took so much abuse in front of the net.|

Ryan Smyth unable to score on the power play | 04/13/2014 6:59 AM
NewsRyan Smyth was unable to score on the power play and will end his career tied for first with Glenn Anderson on the Oilers all-time list.
ImpactSmyth had 126 power play goals with the Oilers which tied Anderson and was one ahead of Wayne Gretzky. Coach Dallas Eakins gave him every opportunity to break the record as Smyth saw a whopping 7:10 minutes of ice time with the man-advantage but it was not to be. It was quite a career for 'Captain Canada' who retires at the age of 38.
Oilers' Ryan Smith retires on winning note | 04/13/2014 1:17 AM
NewsRyan Smyth's farewell to the NHL was upstaged by the Edmonton Oilers' new guys Saturday night.
ImpactFirst-year Oilers Roman Horak, Will Acton and Steve Pinizzotto combined for five points in a 5-2 win against the Vancouver Canucks, bringing Edmonton's eighth consecutive non-playoff season to an end on a winning note. Horak scored his first goal with the Oilers, Acton has his first two-point game in the NHL with a goal an assist, and Pinizzotto earned his first two NHL assists. Jeff Petry, Jordan Eberle and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins also scored for the Oilers. Taylor Hall had three assists to finish the season with 80 points. Smyth, named captain for the night, didn't get onto the scoresheet in his 1,270th and final regular-season game, but took seven shots, only one on net. The Alberta native received a standing ovation late in the game and received another one after the final horn as he skated around Rexall Place before standing by the glass with his family and waving. Smyth is retiring after 19 NHL seasons, 15 of them spent with the Oilers, who paid tribute to him throughout the night.

Ryan Smyth working to set Oilers' PPG record | 04/04/2014 9:58 AM

ImpactWith 126, Smyth is tied with Glenn Anderson for first place on the list. He's scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent this summer and at the age of 38, he might not have another campaign with the Edmonton Oilers.
Ryan Smyth says team is building character | 03/15/2014 9:14 AM
NewsRyan Smyth senses some character building for the Oilers lately.
ImpactFor the second time in three road games, the Oilers came back to earn at least a point, getting one against the Red Wings in a shootout loss Friday night. "We're building some character in this lockerroom, learning from our mistakes, putting them off to the side and continuing to play," said Smyth, who had the lone regulation goal for Edmonton. "You have to find a way to keep yourself in it and capitalize on a few chances here and there."
Ryan Smyth scores lone EDM goal in SO loss | 03/14/2014 11:06 PM
NewsRyan Smyth fired home the only Oilers goal of the evening during a 2-1 shootout loss to the Detroit Red Wings on Friday.
ImpactSmyth has managed 10 goals and 23 points through 58 games this season at the age of 38. It was his first point in three games, while the veteran has points in just three of his last 13 games.
Ryan Smyth passes Gretzky in Oilers PPGs | 03/07/2014 9:45 AM
NewsRyan Smyth passed Wayne Gretzky on the Oilers' all-time power-play goals list.
ImpactSmyth scored his 126th power-play goal with Edmonton on Thursday. Of course, Smyth has played much of his 1,252 game NHL career with the Oilers while Gretzky was limited to nine campaigns with the team during their NHL days. That doesn't take away from the fact that Smyth's 126 power-play goals is impressive though and Smyth still seems rather happy with it. "He's got so many records, it's nice to be past him for this one," Smyth said.
Smyth leads Oilers comeback over Islanders | 03/07/2014 3:21 AM
NewsRyan Smyth had a goal and an assist in Edmonton's 3-2 overtime win against New York Islanders Thursday night.
ImpactSmyth got the Oilers on the board with a power-play goal at 8:28 of the third period. It was Smyth's 126th power-play goal, tying him for the franchise lead with Glenn Anderson. Smyth has been struggling this season and he has only nine goals with 13 assists in 54 games this season. He also has an awful minus-15 rating. Philip Larsen adn Taylor Hall also scored for the Oilers, while Sam Gagner registered two assists in the win.
Ryan Smyth turns 38 and eyes another contract | 02/22/2014 9:41 AM
NewsFormer NHL all-star Ryan Smith of the Edmonton Oilers turned 38 on Friday and is one of the oldest players in the league, but that isn't preventing him from thinking about his playing future.
Impact"I'm fighting for another contract," Smyth said. "It's just a matter of playing as hard as you can. My body's held up fairly decent. I feel I can be an asset in a lot of ways. The coach has put me in some key situations, power play and penalty kill and I'm trying to relish playing center. Yeah, I feel I still have game."
Ryan Smyth finds back of the net Thursday | 02/07/2014 8:52 AM
NewsRyan Smyth scored a goal in Edmonton's 2-1 win over the Rangers.
ImpactSmyth has eight goals and 20 points in 49 games this season. He'll turn 38 during the Olympic break and it remains to be seen if he'll extend his career beyond the 2013-14 campaign. Smyth's contract will expire this summer, but he's likely to find work in the NHL if he decides that he wants to play for one more season.
Ryan Smyth has two point night Sunday | 01/27/2014 6:49 AM
NewsRyan Smyth had a goal and an assist in the Oilers 5-1 win on Sunday.
ImpactSmyth centered the fourth line and his goal was on the power play as he tied Wayne Gretzky for second place all-time with 125 power play goals, one behind leader Glenn Anderson. Smyth has seven goals and 18 points this season so we cannot recommend him at this time.
Smyth scores twice in win | 12/28/2013 1:57 AM
NewsRyan Smyth scored twice to lead the Oilers to a 2-0 victory over the Flames Friday night.
ImpactSmyth broke his scoring slump with two goals. The veteran winger now has six goals and seven assists in 30 games this season. Boyd Gordon assisted both of Smyth's goals.
Oilers' Ryan Smyth has been ice cold | 12/26/2013 4:43 PM
NewsRyan Smyth hasn't been able to muster much offense since the end of November.
ImpactHe hasn't scored a goal since Nov. 19 and he has found the back of the net just four times on the year. In his last 13 games, he has contributed just three assists and they all came in one contest against Colorado on Dec. 5. Smyth has produced 11 points and a minus-11 rating in 29 outings and he shouldn't be on your fantasy radar right now.
Eakins hopes Smyth gives Oilers' boost | 11/05/2013 9:01 AM
NewsEdmonton Oilers coach Dallas Eakins is hoping the return of Ryan Smyth from a groin injury will provide the team with a much needed boost.
ImpactEdmonton has lost five straight games going into Tuesday's contest. "We need Smytty in the lineup right now," said Eakins of Smyth. "When things are not going great, you look to experience and leadership. The more guys like that we can have in the room, the better. So he will definitely calm the storm and helpfully be able to pick up some of our guys and hopefully give them some confidence." Smyth is projected to play alongside Sam Gagner and Nail Yakupov.
Ryan Smyth poised to return on Tuesday | 11/04/2013 5:47 PM
NewsRyan Smyth feels ready to return to Edmonton's lineup on Tuesday from his groin injury.
Impact"There's a great deal of possibility," Smyth said about his chances of playing. "We've got a doc on the road and I'm sure he'll assess me and give the okay but I felt really good and confident the last few practices. No nagging, no lingering so that's a positive step." He skated with Sam Gagner and Nail Yakupov at Monday's practice. Coach Dallas Eakins expects Smyth to play.
Ryan Smyth out with an undisclosed injury | 10/22/2013 10:07 AM
NewsRyan Smyth is dealing with an undisclosed injury.
ImpactSmyth has left the Oilers to return to Edmonton, which obviously means that he'll be unavailable for Tuesday's game in Montreal. He has three goals and four points in eight games this season.
Ryan Smyth scores twice, but Oilers fall | 10/12/2013 10:53 PM
NewsRyan Smyth had two goals for the Oilers, but they were edged 6-5 in overtime by the Leafs on Saturday night.
ImpactThe 37-year-old now has three goals on the season, but he's no longer a fantasy option at this stage of his career; he logged only 12:39 of ice time Saturday night. Jordan Eberle (first goal of season and an assist), Boyd Gordon and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins were the other players who found the back of the net. Mark Arcobello recorded three assists, as Taylor Hall picked up two.
Smyth scores in Oilers loss | 10/11/2013 3:43 AM
NewsRyan Smyth scored a lone goal for the Oilers as they lost to the Canadiens 4-1 Thursday night.
ImpactIt was Smyth's first goal of the season for the Oilers. Smyth was a healthy scratch on Monday and now got a chance to prove that he deserves a regular roster spot. He is -6 for the season and head coach Dallas Eakins certainly doesn't like that. Taylor Hall and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins assisted on the lone goal for the Oilers.
Oilers will scratch Ryan Smyth Monday | 10/07/2013 3:07 PM
NewsRyan Smyth will be a healthy scratch Monday night when Edmonton hosts new Jersey.
Impact"There are guys who have not performed well. I've challenged them to be better," said coach Dallas Eakins. "The reason its Ryan is that I knew that he would handle it professionally. I knew he wouldn't have a lip . . . Sometimes being a good leader and a good teammate goes against you." Eakins has warned his players that if their play doesn't improve then they could find themselves out of the lineup as well. Ryan Hamilton, who was called up Friday, will play in his place.
Ryan Smyth's time on first line limited | 10/06/2013 8:13 AM
NewsLook for Ryan Smyth's time on the first line to be over Monday.
ImpactSmyth has struggled as he is minus-five in the Oilers first two games alongside Taylor Hall and Ales Hemsky and with the imminent return of Ryan Nugent-Hopkins on Monday, look for Smyth to take on a bottom-six role. The 37-year-old has little fantasy value.
Ryan Smyth contines to play with Hall, Hemsky | 09/29/2013 7:29 AM
NewsRyan Smyth played all of the preseason on a line with Taylor Hall and Ales Hemsky.
ImpactIt's a nice gig for the veteran as he is seeing more ice time with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Sam Gagner on the shelf. We do not think he will play the whole season with Hall and Hemsky but he could be a scoring winger early in the season in his upgraded role. Take him late in deeper pools with the expectation that he will be dropped from your lineup when the Oilers return to full strength.
RNH injury might increase Smyth's ice time | 09/10/2013 8:56 AM
NewsRyan Smyth might end up playing a bit more than projected in the early weeks of the season due to Ryan Nugent-Hopkins' shoulder injury.
ImpactAmong other things, Smyth might see some time on the Oilers' second power-play unit. "I still believe I can deliver some offense," said Smyth. "I can certainly give more than I did last year. I have to start quicker. I don't want to be known as just a defensive player now." He had just two goals and 13 points in 47 games last season.
Ryan Smyth will fill whatever role he's asked | 08/30/2013 7:22 PM
NewsRyan Smyth is willing to accept whatever role he's given by the Edmonton Oilers this season.
ImpactHe understands that he'll probably be asked to play a lesser role in 2013-14. Smyth notched just two goals and 13 points in 47 games last year.
Ryan Smyth not ready to hang 'em up just yet | 04/30/2013 10:09 AM
NewsRyan Smyth said he feels "great" physically and "absolutely" plans to return for the final year of his contract.
ImpactSmyth had just two goals and 13 points in 47 games this season after turning 37 in February. If he wants to keep playing, it'll like be for the Oil since we can't imagine another team taking on his $4.5 million salary next year. However, that doesn't mean he'll be playing in games. It's entirely possible Smyth could spend more time in the press box next season than on the ice.
Ryan Smyth might lose his role with Oilers | 04/18/2013 10:41 AM
NewsIt remains to be seen if the Edmonton Oilers will have a role for Ryan Smyth next season.
ImpactSmyth, who turned 37 in February, is signed through the 2013-14 campaign. However, he's recorded just two goals and 10 points in 42 games this season. "I'm not making excuses ... I know I haven't played as well as I can," Smyth said. "Throughout games this year, it's been inconsistent. Obviously, my offensive production hasn't been as good as it should be. For sure, internally, I'm thinking, `two goals? I'm better than that.' I'm not trying to sugar-coat this. It's not good when you can remember the games you scored in. One was my birthday (Feb. 21 against Minnesota, his last goal). The other was short-handed (against Vancouver Feb. 4)." At this stage in his career, it seems unlikely that he'll bounce back offensively and the real question is if the Oilers will want to consistently use him as a bottom-six forward next season. He could end up spending a lot of time in the press box as they lean more towards younger options.
Ryan Smyth gets an assist Wednesday | 04/11/2013 11:11 AM
NewsRyan Smyth assisted on the Oilers' lone goal in a 3-1 loss Wednesday.
ImpactSmyth has two goals and 10 points in 39 games this season. He's in the twilight of his career and probably won't do much offensively in 2013-14.
Report: Ryan Smyth was better at left wing | 03/23/2013 12:13 PM
NewsMoving veteran Ryan Smyth from left wing to center has dramatically decreased the player's performance, according to Jonathan Willis of the Edmonton Journal.
Impact"It's generally difficult to come to a firm conclusion after such a short period of time," Willis writes in his analysis (complete with charts), "but the gap in performance is so large that it seems obvious the Smyth at centre experiment isn't working for the player, and more importantly it isn't working for the team."
Ryan Smyth heating up after being scratched | 02/25/2013 12:53 PM
NewsRyan Smyth has a goal and four points in the four games since he was a healthy scratch.
ImpactSmyth had an assist while playing a season-high 22 minutes Saturday and has even started to see time on the Oilers' top forward line. We don't expect the old Captain Canada to resurface anytime soon, but Smyth could make himself worth of adding in deeper leagues if he keeps this up.
Ryan Smyth will play with Yakupov, Belanger | 02/16/2013 11:17 AM
NewsRyan Smyth is projected to play alongside Eric Belanger and Nail Yakupov on Saturday.
ImpactSmyth spent Tuesday's game in the press box. He has just two points in 12 games this season, but he should pick up the pace somewhat as the campaign progresses.
Oilers' Ryan Smyth plans to play smarter | 02/15/2013 11:12 AM
NewsIt looks like Ryan Smyth will probably play on Saturday after being a healthy scratch on Tuesday.
Impact"I'm a competitor so, absolutely, it's tough to take," Smyth said of being scratched. "It's in our nature to play hockey and not sit and watch, but that was the coach's decision. He felt it was best for the team at the time. We'll move forward." Smyth plans to play smarter after accumulating 18 PIM in his last two games.
Ryan Smyth taking a lot of bad penalties | 02/12/2013 9:54 AM
NewsRyan Smyth has been taking a lot of bad penalties of late.
ImpactSmyth has been called for six minors in the last four games, including two for slashing, two for hooking, a tripping and an interference call. These penalties may be caused by Smyth not being able to keep up with the play anymore, a possibility for the veteran who will turn 37 on Feb. 21. He has only a goal and two points in 12 games this season with a minus-three rating so it is very hard to recommend him at this time.
Ryan Smyth scores short handed goal in loss | 02/05/2013 5:01 AM
NewsRyan Smyth scored his first goal of the season while short-handed in the Oilers 3-2 OT loss to the Vancouver Canucks.
ImpactSmyth isn't close to the player he once was, and is now a third line player that will get some special teams time and could move up due to injuries. For now he's not getting the ice time or chances needed to be successful in fantasy formats so steer clear of Smyth unless injuries allow him to move up the depth chart.
Ryan Smyth adjusting to more defensive role | 01/10/2013 11:39 AM
NewsRyan Smyth knows at this stage of his career, he has to take on a bit of a different role.
Impact"I can check. I can kill penalties. Accepting those kind of roles when you are asked to is what makes a good team," Smyth said. He's been an offensive force for most of his career, but he's been on the decline for the last few seasons in that regard and it's hard to see him rebounding at the age of 36. Still, he's worth keeping an eye on if he ends up getting playing time with some of the Oilers' promising young forwards.
