ImpactThornton is an unrestricted free agent and Bruin GM Peter Chiarelli told reporters that he believed the NHL game was trending away from fighting and that he wanted to add speed to his lineup for 2014-15. Those comments can not be viewed as positive for a Thornton return to Beantown.

Shawn Thornton: Players won't get too rusty | 02/11/2014 9:48 AM
NewsShawn Thornton doesn't think players will end up taking it too easy during the Olympic break.
ImpactThose that aren't playing in Sochi will get to spend some time vacationing before they have to return to their team's for practice. That creates potential problems as teams or players that have momentum could lose it and players could get rusty. Still, Thornton is confident that those NHLers on break won't lose sight of the bigger picture. "Guys do a pretty good job of staying in shape during the break," he said. "They may take 4-5 days off to enjoy it at first, but then everybody is back working out wherever they are. Nobody gets out of shape anymore. Everybody takes care of themselves." He added that it might be in contrast to 2010, where he felt guys were a little sloppy in the games immediately after the break. It helps that those not participating in the Olympics will have a week of team practices before play resumes.

I'm looking forward to [Saturday], to hopefully play and start moving forward, focusing on the tasks ahead and not on the past." NewsIt sounds as though Boston forward Shawn Thornton will be appealing the 15-game suspension he received for punching an unsuspecting opponent and causing a serious injury to Pittsburgh's Brooks Orpik.
ImpactThe 15 games means that he would lose $86,615,45 but Thornton said: "I will be consulting with the Bruins, my representation and the NHLPA about next steps, and will be in a position to address the matter publicly after speaking with those parties." NHL rules give Thornton one week to appeal the ruling, and it sounds as though he will. Bruins president Cam Neely was appalled with the NHL ruling. "We've had our fair share of players hurt badly by concussions. I don't think anyone's gotten a 15-game suspension out of those. Thornton is a guy who plays the role he plays and has never had any suspensions or issues. It comes down a little harsh for me. I feel bad personally for Thornton. I can speak to his time in Boston and he's been a fair, honest player. This certainly wasn't like him. He feels terrible about it. He knows it's affected his reputation. He's been a great teammate for a lot of years. I feel very bad for him."

ImpactThe Bruins said Thornton will miss the next seven to 10 days, although concussions are incredibly difficult injures to pinpoint. Both Thornton and the Bruins will have to wait this out until all of the symptoms clear. Thornton doesn't really have fantasy value, so this is more of an FYI than anything.

ImpactCoach Claude Julien said after the game Thornton was still being evaluated. The fight with Scott was one of the most anticipated of the season after the Sabres signed Scott in the offseason, admittedly in response to last year's Ryan Miller incident. No one in Boston said concussion Thursday when it came to Scott, but it certainly wouldn't surprise us.
Bruins' fourth-liners pick up the slack | 01/26/2013 9:37 AM
NewsWhile the rest of the Bruins were struggling to get going, the fourth line picked up the slack against the Islanders.
ImpactIt was a great night for the fourth line as Shawn Thornton, who also had 10 penalty minutes, and Gregory Campbell netted goals. "They played an extremely good game for us," coach Claude Julien said. "They allowed us to stay in the game for two periods until we got ourselves going a little bit."
S. Thornton: NHL now seems willing to talk | 01/03/2013 10:01 AM
NewsShawn Thornton seems to think that the NHL is acting differently now than it has previously in this lockout.
Impact"We've said all along that we're willing to negotiate, and if they're willing to negotiate, then things will get done. But that didn't seem to be case until now," said Thornton. "Hopefully we're into it and something good comes out of it today, tomorrow or however long it takes. Hopefully we can get something done sooner than later. Both sides want to play, and the sooner the better. They keep on talking about (a 48-game schedule), but if you can get 52, why not?" In order to get a 52-game season, the two sides probably have to reach an agreement by Thursday.
