NewsRed Wings winger Danny Cleary (knee) appears to have arrived at training camp healthy for the first time in a couple years.

Daniel Cleary aims to prove doubters wrong | 07/17/2014 9:59 AM
NewsDaniel Cleary wants to prove those that question his contract wrong.
ImpactCleary agreed to a one-year deal worth at least $1.5 million and up to an additional $1 million in bonuses. That's significant given how much he's declined in recent years. His 2013-14 campaign was another low for him as he had just eight points in 52 games. "You want to prove people wrong," said Cleary. "My main objective is get healthy and play the way I know I can. Last year was a tough year." He might do a bit better this season if he can stay healthy, but we wouldn't count on him having any fantasy value in standard leagues.

NewsDaniel Cleary is hoping to bounce back in 2014-15.

ImpactCleary inked a one-year deal with the Detroit Red Wings after recording just eight points in 52 games last season. "My program has been one of loyalty, and there's good things and bad things that go with that," Red Wings GM Ken Holland said on re-signing Cleary despite his struggles. "Way more good, in my opinion. I reached out to a lot of people before signing Dan, and he's very popular in our organization and with our on-ice leaders." Perhaps Holland will be rewarded for taking a chance on Cleary, but we doubt it. We think Cleary's days as a reliable secondary scorer are over.

NewsPhiladelphia GM Paul Holgrem doesn't resent Daniel Cleary for deciding to stay with the Detroit Red Wings.
Philadelphia Inquirer & Daily News

"He spent eight years there and he was hoping to continue his ride with the Red Wings. Good for him. He's a loyal guy, a character guy. He obviously has deep roots with the Red Wings. I actually think more highly of him now than I did a couple days ago." Cleary had accepted an invitation to join the Flyers in camp on a tryout contract, but after talking with Detroit's brass on Wednesday he agreed to a one-year deal to remain with the Wings.

"He knows his role. He's made a home in Detroit. He knows his teammates. He's been here since 2005. You talk to him. He likes being a Red Wing." ImpactCleary is also allegedly no longer expected to attend the Philadelphia Flyers' training camp due to a "complication." The idea seemed to be that Cleary would attend Philadelphia's camp on a professional tryout offer and then, once the Flyers had put themselves in a better cap situation at the end of the month, Cleary would sign a three-year/$8.25 million deal. For his part, Flyers GM Paul Holmgren both denied that Cleary has been guaranteed a contract and that Cleary won't attend their training camp, which opens Thursday.

Now, Holmgren is also attempting to shoot down the reports that Cleary will not attend their camp.
Flyers reported Cleary bid dwarfs Wings' | 09/10/2013 3:24 PM
NewsThe Detroit Red Wings offered Daniel Cleary significantly less in July than the three-year/$8.25 million deal that he will reportedly sign with the Philadelphia Flyers.
Detroit Free Press
ImpactCleary's contract with Philadelphia isn't official and that isn't expected to change until the end of the month. Either way, Detroit offered Cleary a little under $2 million annually for a three-year deal and an alternative that would have paid him a little more per season, but with a shorter term. Both proposals were made in July, before Detroit signed Daniel Alfredsson and Stephen Weiss. They were still willing invite Cleary to their training camp on a tryout basis, but he turned them down. "I'm a big Dan Cleary fan," Red Wings GM Ken Holland said. "I think he really grew into a real solid NHL player in Detroit. He was a good leader. We tried to re-sign him."

Flyers sign Daniel Cleary to three-year deal | 09/10/2013 1:07 AM
NewsDaniel Cleary has signed a three-year/$8.25 million contract with the Philadelphia Flyers.
Helene St. James on Twitter
ImpactCleary's deal will be official at the end of September and it will come with a no-movement clause. This deal is a curious one for the Flyers given that their third and fourth lines already looked solid and they were already up against the cap. With Cleary signed, the Flyers are expected to shop one of the nine defensemen, not including Chris Pronger, they have signed to one-way contracts. Cleary doesn't have much offensive value to begin with and this move doesn't do him any favors from a fantasy perspective. He isn't likely to get much playing time on a scoring line or with the man advantage.

He isn't interested in attending Detroit's camp on a tryout basis unless he gets a guarantee that he'll get a contract. Cleary says he has "options with guaranteed contracts from other teams," but he would like to stay with the Wings.

Three other teams are said to be interested in Cleary's services. Cleary had only nine goals and 15 points during the regular season but was strong in the playoffs with 10 points in 14 games. Look for a 20 goal, 40-45 point season from Cleary and draft him accordingly.

UFA Daniel Cleary skates with Red Wings | 09/06/2013 10:07 AM
NewsDaniel Cleary took part in a conditioning skate with his old Red Wings teammates.
ImpactCleary is an unrestricted free agent and there doesn't seem to be a spot for him with Detroit. He's a solid bottom-six forward so it wouldn't be surprising if an NHL team asks him to attend their training camp on a tryout basis and that ends up leading to a one-year deal.
Winger Daniel Clearly could be ex-Wing soon | 08/11/2013 10:06 AM
NewsThe Detroit Red Wings have had interest in re-signing veteran left winger Daniel Cleary, who is an unrestricted free agent, but the team is having a difficult time finding salary-cap room for him.

He was great in the postseason with 10 points and 25 hits in 14 games.

That being said, it wouldn't be surprising if Detroit managed to retain his services.
Red Wings need more discipline: Daniel Cleary | 05/26/2013 11:11 AM
NewsThe Red Wings were completely outplayed in their 4-1 loss to the Blackhawks in Chicago Saturday night and veteran forward Daniel Cleary thinks his team will require a more disciplined approach to prevent the Hawks from coming back and taking this Western playoff series.
ImpactThe Wings were ahead 3-1 in the best-of-seven set and, after Saturday, remain ahead 3-2. "We gift-wrapped a couple goals," said Daniel Cleary, who scored the Wings' lone goal. "We gotta be more disciplined. Look, they played better than us, played harder, played more determined. It's hard to match that when their backs are against the wall. We have to be ready to go Monday night as if our backs are against the wall, which I like to think they are. As a young team, we just have to tell them to play loose, not tentative or scared," Cleary said. "You can't be afraid of success. You gotta go out and take it. The Blackhawks flat-out just wanted to win more than us, and we have to have the same mentality."

We feel that the gap is not like that. They're the (No.) 1 seed. They've got the pressure." The Blackhawks biggest edge over the Red Wings lies in their depth. If Detroit is going to win this series, it will probably be because guys like Cleary stepped up.

NewsDaniel Cleary ended his nine game pointless slump on Thursday.
Detroit Free Press
ImpactCleary scored his first goal of the season at 5:14 of the first period. He broke out in 2010-11 with 26 goals and 46 points in 68, but you're better off forgetting that. The 34-year-old forward is a marginal option in standard fantasy leagues at very best.
Cleary and other NHLers ramp up workouts | 01/05/2013 12:58 PM
NewsMany NHL players are ramping up their workouts with the hope that a 48-game schedule will start on January 19th.
ImpactDaniel Cleary and a number of Detroit players will intensify their workouts this week and will play in five-on-five games with some Phoenix players. "Our goal is to get a good week of five-on-five games, with maybe a referee, focusing on the little things: stopping and starting, the attention to detail, the defensive side of the game, a little bit. And, if things go well, it'll make sure you're ready", said Cleary. Many NHL players have either started or will start the same process, including the Penguins under the leadership of Sidney Crosby. Let's hope these scrimmages are not in vain.
Cleary understands that time is running out | 01/03/2013 10:45 AM
NewsAs the CBA negotiations drag on, Daniel Cleary knows that time is running out.
Impact"There's a window of opportunity here that we all know is getting smaller and smaller," Cleary said. "The bottom line is they're talking and that's all we can hope for as a fan or a player, they're talking." The talks are expected to resume on Thursday with mediators present. It's believed that the two sides have roughly a week left to save the NHL season before we pass the point of no return.
