|Assets:||Has great size and strength, plenty of snarl to his game, as well as good instincts. Can score goals and kill penalties, but he does his best work when utilizing his big frame to create space for teammates. Will also drop the gloves and is a big open-ice hitter.|
|Flaws:||Definitely needs more work on his puck skills. Must also continue to work on his skating stride and overall discipline in order to maximize output in the National Hockey League. Otherwise, he may remain a bottom-six forward at the highest level.|

Tom Wilson won't be ready for camp | 07/09/2014 8:17 PM
NewsTom Wilson isn't projected to fully recover from his ankle injury until after the start of the Capitals' training camp.
ImpactCapitals coach Barry Trotz was previously optimistic about Wilson's chances of being ready for the start of camp. Wilson's agent said that his client is still expected to be fine before the end of the preseason though. He suffered the injury during the offseason in a "fall," but other than that the Capitals are being vague on what caused it.

Tom Wilson has suffered an ankle injury | 07/02/2014 4:51 PM
NewsTom Wilson has sustained an ankle injury.
ImpactWilson is being evaluated and there's no timetable for his recovery yet. Even if he ends up being projected to return in time for the 2014-15 campaign, this might significantly hinder his summer workout routine.
Tom Wilson says he's done enough fighting | 03/16/2014 11:35 AM
NewsTom Wilson, 19, has skated only 503 minutes with the Washington Capitals this season, by far the fewest of the nine teenage NHL rookies who have played at least 50 games this season.
ImpactWilson has scored only three goals and nine points in his limited playing time and has spent more of the year illustrating his grit. The Toronto native ranks fourth in the NHL with 133 penalty minutes and is tied for second in major penalties (13), including 12 fights. But Wilson wants to work toward making a greater impact on the Capitals. "I don't know how many fights I have this year, but I've done that enough. I want to work on my game and keep learning the other stuff," Wilson said.
No supplemental discipline for Tom Wilson | 12/19/2013 6:19 PM
NewsTom Wilson will not face supplemental discipline for his check on Philadelphia Flyers forward Brayden Schenn.
ImpactHe had his hearing with the league on Thursday. Wilson received five minutes for charging and game misconduct on the play. The rookie winger has four points and 78 penalty minutes in 34 games this campaign.

NewsTom Wilson might be suspended for charging Brayden Schenn on Tuesday.
NHL Department of Player Safety on Twitter
ImpactWilson was ejected from Tuesday's game as a result. There was some initial concern that Schenn might have sustained a concussion as he ended up slamming head-first into the end boards, but fortunately he seems to have escaped with just some stiffness. Wilson has a phone hearing scheduled for Thursday, which means he can't be suspended for more than five games.
Tom Wilson gets ejected, may face suspension | 12/17/2013 11:50 PM
NewsWashington Capitals forward Tom Wilson was ejected from Tuesday's 5-2 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers for charging Brayden Schenn, who seems OK as of this writing.
ImpactWilson racked up a staggering 20 PIM thanks to that altercation. It's unlikely that made a big impact for fantasy owners, as he's (rightfully) only owned in 1 percent of leagues. The winger could be more prominent in the future, though.
Tom Wilson (personal) misses practice Thurs. | 12/05/2013 12:23 PM
NewsTom Wilson skipped Thursday's practice because of family reasons.
ImpactHe's expected to be back in Washington on Friday. The Capitals don't play again until Saturday night against Nashville, so we'll leave Wilson as active.
Caps won't loan Tom Wilson to Canada for WJC | 12/02/2013 5:38 PM
NewsTom Wilson won't be loaned to Canada's World Junior Championships squad.
ImpactThe Washington Capitals want to keep him on their NHL roster. "He means too much to our team and it's best for his development to stay with the Capitals," said GM George McPhee in a statement. In 27 games with the Caps this season, Wilson has four points and 53 penalty minutes.

NewsTom Wilson won't be returned to the OHL Plymouth Whalers this season.

ImpactThe Capitals have decided to continue Wilson's development with the NHL club. He has no points in seven contests and is averaging just 6:42 minutes per game, so we don't expect him to have any fantasy value in 2013-14.
Capitals made room for winger Tom Wilson | 09/29/2013 7:02 PM
NewsThe motive for trading Mathieu Perreault on Sunday was pretty obvious: the Washington Capitals wanted to make room for large winger Tom Wilson.
ImpactDominating junior-level hockey again wasn't in the best interest of the team or the player, apparently. The 2012 first-rounder (16th overall) might not be ready to dominate offensively at the NHL level just yet, but he's worth monitoring, at least if he can provide some supplementary stats like PIM as a budding power forward.
GM MCPhee thinks Wilson belongs in junior | 09/29/2013 10:51 AM
NewsGM George McPhee thinks that Tom Wilson could be better off playing this season in junior hockey.
ImpactMcPhee said that he does not love playing teenagers and then stated: "The benefits are he plays a lot more," when asked if he should be back in junior hockey. "He plays the power play, penalty kill, everything else. But is it not enough? Does he need more? If you keep him here does he develop better habits playing here even though he's not playing as much as you like? It's something you keep watching." The Capitals have a big decision to make although they could wait nine NHL games and see how he progresses.
Tom Wilson, 19, good bet to make Capitals | 09/21/2013 11:41 AM
NewsIn three preseason games, Tom Wilson has two goals and two fights and has done everything to stay on Washington's roster with about a week before final roster cuts.
Impact"I've got to prove to them I'm worthy of staying around," Wilson said. "I just need to stay humble, work hard, do the blue collar stuff and stay around as long as possible." Wilson, 6-foot-4 and 217 pounds, may still be growing at 19. He is an impressive player and a bona fide rookie-of-the-year candidate. With Plymouth of the OHL last season, Wilson had 58 points (23 games) in 48 games.
Oates endorses Tom Wilson's bid to make Caps | 09/18/2013 10:51 AM
NewsCapitals coach Adam Oates wants Tom Wilson to be part of the Capitals' opening game roster.
ImpactCapitals GM George McPhee will make the final determination, but getting the head coaches public endorsement is huge. Wilson is battling for a roster spot after enjoying a three-game stint with the Capitals in 2013. "We need what he brings," Oates said. "We have some smaller guys in certain positions and he's a big, strong guy and that will always help." Wilson isn't eligible to play in the AHL yet, so he'll either play for the Capitals or OHL Plymouth Whalers.
Tom Wilson would like to play at 2014 WJC | 08/12/2013 1:29 PM
NewsTom Wilson wants to be playing in the NHL this season, but if he isn't then playing for Team Canada at the 2014 IIHF World Junior Championship is high on his wishlist.
Impact"Hopefully I can stay up [in the NHL] as long as I can, but it's a tremendous honor to play for Hockey Canada," he said. "It's been a dream of mine since I was tiny." Wilson was cut from the squad last year. He hasn't played with the Capitals in the regular season, but skated in three playoff contests with Washington in May. Wilson would probably benefit from a trial NHL period in 2013-14 if he can stick with the team following training camp.
Caps hope Tom Wilson uses more than size | 07/14/2013 10:18 AM
NewsWashington Capitals coach Adam Oates expressed his desire to see prominent prospect Tom Wilson do more than just throw his weight around.
ImpactHe's concerned that Wilson will develop bad habits, especially if he returns to the OHL. "Where he plays he's such a big man, the one thing that we don't want is for him to get in lazy habits because he dwarfs everybody over there [in the OHL]," Oates said. "I mentioned Troy Brouwer's stick - he's a big man like him and he's figured it out - so just experiment with it and try to maximize a little bit more."

Caps' Tom Wilson makes good first impression | 05/12/2013 12:15 PM
NewsTom Wilson played only six minutes and 24 seconds in his NHL debut for the Washington Capitals on Friday night, but the young winger still managed to make a solid first impression.
ImpactHe was credited with a shot on goal and four hits in just eight shifts while demonstrating his strong skating ability and ably protecting the puck with his 6-foot-4, 210-pound frame. "For a 19-year-old to come in and establish a little bit of a presence out there and not back down from anyone, starting stuff and playing a solid fourth-line game, that says a lot about his character," said Jay Beagle, who skated on the fourth line with Wilson. Coach Adam Oates said that if not for the penalties the Capitals took early on in the game, he likely would have used Wilson more. So don't be surprised to see more ice time for the 2012 first-round draft pick against the New York Rangers today, depending on the game situation.

ImpactThe 16th overall pick in the 2012 draft recorded 58 points and 104 penalty minutes in 48 games with Plymouth of the OHL this season. He plays a physical style and he's capable of chipping in offensively. Coach Adam Oates said he's looking for a "spark" and Wilson could provide that on the fourth line alongside Matt Hendricks and Jay Beagle.
Caps bring up Tom Wilson, may play Friday | 05/09/2013 2:18 PM
NewsTom Wilson has been recalled by Washington and he might play in Game 5 on Friday night.
ImpactHe skated with Matt Hendricks and Jay Beagle on the fourth line during Thursday's practice. Joey Crabb, who was also called up from the minors Thursday, joined extras Wojtek Wolski, Aaron Volpatti and Brooks Laich. Coach Adam Oates would not confirm Wilson's presence in the lineup, but said Crabb, Wolski and Volpatti are options to play as well.

ImpactHe was called up to participate in part of Washington's training camp. The 16th overall pick in the 2012 draft has put up 36 points and 59 penalty minutes in 31 games with the Whalers this OHL campaign. He'll probably get a longer look at camp next fall.
Tom Wilson invited to Capitals' training camp | 01/11/2013 12:11 AM
NewsThe Washington Capitals have added junior prospect Tom Wilson to their training camp roster.
ImpactWilson, 18, was selected 16th overall in the 2012 draft and signed a three-year entry level deal with Washington in July after he stood out at the team's annual development camp. Wilson's invite is something of a reversal for the Capitals, considering that earlier this week, general manager George McPhee said he didn't envision including junior players in the abbreviated training camp. In 30 games with the Ontario Hockey League's Plymouth Whalers this season, Wilson has recorded 12 goals, 22 assists and 59 penalty minutes and he was one of the final players cut from Canada's world junior team roster last month. Wilson is slated to play with Plymouth Friday night and travel to Washington Saturday.

Tom Wilson gets assist to continue solid year | 01/04/2013 10:36 PM
NewsTom Wilson notched an assist in Plymouth's 4-3 triumph over Owen Sound on Friday night.
ImpactWilson continues to compile the points despite not really be considered a big offensive threat when he was drafted by the Capitals in the 2012 draft. He has 30 points in 28 games.
Tom Wilson showing improved scoring touch | 01/02/2013 10:48 PM
NewsTom Wilson lit the lamp in Plymouth's 6-2 win over Guelph on Wednesday night.
ImpactWilson wasn't really known for his scoring ability when the Capitals drafted him in the first round of the 2012 draft, but he's showing a lot of improvement in that area this year in the OHL. The 18-year-old has topped his career highs in goals with 11 and points with 29. Last year, he had nine and 27, respectively, in 49 contests. Mitchell Heard, the Avalanche's 2012 second-round pick, also had two assists in his first OHL game this year.
