Pens undecided on Olli Maatta to World U20s | 12/08/2013 9:49 AM
NewsThe Pittsburgh Penguins have not yet decided on whether they should loan defenseman Olli Maatta to the Finnish junior team for the Under20 World Championships.
ImpactThe loss of defenseman Brooks Orpik on Saturday may force the Penguins to keep the young rearguard who has a goal and five assists in 31 games. He has no real fantasy value at this time as he has an even plus/minus rating and only four penalty minutes but at age 19 he is going to be a mainstay on the Penguins blueline for many years.
Olli Maatta earning lots of respect with Pens | 11/23/2013 11:39 AM
NewsRookie Olli Maatta, 19, Maatta has earned a spot alongside all-star Kris Letang in a pairing that calls for more minutes and more responsibility is easier.
Impact"As he's gotten more comfortable and more reliable, more dependable, he's gotten a bump up in responsibility," coach Dan Bylsma said. "Playing with Kris Letang, he's getting [matched against] good players on other teams, top lines at times. He's been up to that task, especially the last two games, maybe three games, [which] have been his strongest games." Maatta entered the game Friday with a goal and three assists and a plus-minus rating of plus-1. He was averaging more than 16 minutes of ice time a game in the three games after he moved to Letang's pairing. He was under 16 minutes in 14 of the first 17 games.
Pens might still demote Olli Maatta in 13-14 | 10/25/2013 10:51 AM
NewsAlthough Olli Maatta will stay past the nine-game mark, the Pittsburgh Penguins aren't guaranteeing that he'll stick with the team for the entire 2013-14 campaign.
ImpactThe nine-game mark is significant because once Maatta plays in his 10th game on Friday, this will count as the first season of his entry-level contract. If he reaches the 40-game mark this season, then he'll be eligible to become an unrestricted free agent a year earlier. "We'll see how it goes," Penguins GM Ray Shero said. "Physically he seems ready for the challenge. It's a step in his career that I think he's ready for, and we'll continue to look at it as we go down the line." It will be particularly interesting to see how Maatta is impacted by the return of Kris Letang, which is also likely to happen Friday.

NewsOlli Maatta will be staying with the Pittsburgh Penguins this season.
ImpactThe rookie rearguard has appeared in nine games for the Penguins this campaign and the first year of his contract will kick in after he plays in his 10th contest Friday night against the New York Islanders. Penguins weighing options regarding Maatta | 10/23/2013 10:41 AM
NewsThe Pittsburgh Penguins are still weighing their options when it comes to Olli Maatta.
ImpactMaatta has played in nine games and if he plays in a 10th contest then this will count as the first season of his entry-level contract. One consideration for the Penguins is the fact that Kris Letang (knee) should return soon and that would push Maatta down in the depth charts. If they're not confident Maatta will play consistently, then it might make more sense to return him to OHL London.
Olli Maatta awaits Penguins' decision | 10/22/2013 2:51 PM
NewsOlli Maatta has played in nine games with the Pittsburgh Penguins and if he plays in 10 this will count as the first season of his entry-level contract.
ImpactIn other words, Maatta's trial period is over. The Penguins can either choose to return him to OHL London or allow that key milestone to pass and thus likely keep him for the rest of the 2013-14 campaign. Rookies that survive past the nine-game mark typically stick with their club for the remainder of the season, but it's worth noting that he'll hit another key milestone once he plays in his 40th game. At that point, he'll be eligible to become an unrestricted free agent a season earlier. The Penguins haven't announced their decision yet, but earlier reports suggest that he will be allowed to stick with the club.
Olli Maatta staying more than nine games. | 10/20/2013 10:06 AM
NewsThe Pittsburgh Tribune-Review is reporting that multiple sources have said that rookie defenseman Olli Maatta will remain with the Penguins past the nine game mark.
ImpactOnce Maatta plays more than nine games, the first year of his entry-level contract is used up but the more important milestone is the 40 game mark when the season actually counts as one as far as getting closer to free agency is concerned. Maatta scored his first NHL goal on Saturday and the defenseman now has three points in eight games while averaging 14:58 minutes per game. It's tough to make a call on him fantasy wise as Kris Letang should return shortly, moving him down another peg on the depth charts.
Olli Maatta making case to stay with Penguins | 10/10/2013 9:43 AM
NewsOlli Maatta is making a strong impression on the Pittsburgh Penguins.
ImpactMaatta has burned through three games of his nine-contest trail. At that point, the Penguins need to either return him to the OHL or have this count as the first season of his entry-level contract. So far, he's looked ready to play in the NHL, but he might get sent down anyways. The Penguins already have an established defense and it would take some doing to give Maatta regular minutes after Kris Letang returns from his knee injury.

Olli Maatta is still with the Penguins | 09/30/2013 10:02 AM
NewsOlli Maatta is still a member of the Pittsburgh Penguins as the 5pm ET cutdown looms.
ImpactAll teams must be down to their 23 man limit and be at or under the $64.3 million salary cap. Maatta has played well in training camp and is one of Pittsburgh's top prospects but if he does not crack the lineup he must return to the London Knights for the remainder of the season.
