Pens getting offense from young defenseman | 03/16/2014 10:55 AM
NewsWith Kris Letang's health scare taking a perennial Norris Trophy contender out of the lineup and few forwards scoring outside of Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Chris Kunitz, the Penguins have turned to a 19-year-old Finn to spark the offense from the blue line.
ImpactOlli Maatta, 19 and a year removed from junior hockey, is displaying nearly unprecedented offensive talent for a teenaged defenseman. After a modest start, Maatta is besting goalies and setting up teammates like a contender for the Calder Trophy, given to the league's top rookie. His points-per-game total increased to .54 in December, .67 in January, and .73 during the Olympics-shortened month of February and March. Maatta boasts the highest points total (28) among a bumper crop of scoring-savvy rookie defensemen, including Winnipeg's Jacob Trouba (24), Anaheim's Hampus Lindholm Ducks (23) and Nashville's Seth Jones (23). Maatta's scoring prowess at such a young age is even more impressive when considering that goals are scarce in today's NHL. Teams are averaging 2.76 goals per game in 2013-14, compared to nearly four per game during the early to mid 1980s.

"It's amazing how these days young guys can come in the league and be ready like that, said Selanne, tournament MVP in his record-tying sixth Olympics. Maatta helped Finland win the bronze medal with two goals and three assists in six games. "Even at the Olympics, when he played best against best, he was so calm," Selanne said. "He didn't look like he was a first-year player." Maatta, selected by the Penguins 22nd overall at the 2012 NHL draft, had two goals Thursday night in a 5-3 loss at San Jose. It was his first multiple-goal game in the NHL and his third multiple-point game in the past five outings going into the game against the Ducks. He has nine goals, 18 assists in his 61 games.

Penguins think very highly of Olli Maatta | 01/30/2014 8:22 AM
NewsIf it were up to the Pittsburgh Penguins, Olli Maatta would be getting serious consideration for the Calder Trophy.
Impact"The last time I saw a rookie defenseman have this kind of an impact was Rob Blake with the Kings (during the 1990-'91 season)," assistant coach Tony Granato said. "We've asked him to do more than we ever ask rookies to do: top unit, playing against the top players, killing penalties, playing the power play. And he does it all so well. He's like no rookie I've ever seen. It's a remarkable thing." Offensively, Maatta has 19 points in 52 contests, which puts him well behind the pack in that regard. That being said, he does have five points in his last six games.

Pens might still demote Olli Maatta in 13-14 | 10/25/2013 10:51 AM
NewsAlthough Olli Maatta will stay past the nine-game mark, the Pittsburgh Penguins aren't guaranteeing that he'll stick with the team for the entire 2013-14 campaign.
ImpactThe nine-game mark is significant because once Maatta plays in his 10th game on Friday, this will count as the first season of his entry-level contract. If he reaches the 40-game mark this season, then he'll be eligible to become an unrestricted free agent a year earlier. "We'll see how it goes," Penguins GM Ray Shero said. "Physically he seems ready for the challenge. It's a step in his career that I think he's ready for, and we'll continue to look at it as we go down the line." It will be particularly interesting to see how Maatta is impacted by the return of Kris Letang, which is also likely to happen Friday.

ImpactMaatta has played in nine games and if he plays in a 10th contest then this will count as the first season of his entry-level contract. If they're not confident Maatta will play consistently, then it might make more sense to return him to OHL London.
Olli Maatta awaits Penguins' decision | 10/22/2013 2:51 PM
NewsOlli Maatta has played in nine games with the Pittsburgh Penguins and if he plays in 10 this will count as the first season of his entry-level contract.

The Penguins can either choose to return him to OHL London or allow that key milestone to pass and thus likely keep him for the rest of the 2013-14 campaign. Rookies that survive past the nine-game mark typically stick with their club for the remainder of the season, but it's worth noting that he'll hit another key milestone once he plays in his 40th game. At that point, he'll be eligible to become an unrestricted free agent a season earlier. The Penguins haven't announced their decision yet, but earlier reports suggest that he will be allowed to stick with the club.

Maatta scored his first NHL goal on Saturday and the defenseman now has three points in eight games while averaging 14:58 minutes per game. It's tough to make a call on him fantasy wise as Kris Letang should return shortly, moving him down another peg on the depth charts.

At that point, the Penguins need to either return him to the OHL or have this count as the first season of his entry-level contract. So far, he's looked ready to play in the NHL, but he might get sent down anyways. The Penguins already have an established defense and it would take some doing to give Maatta regular minutes after Kris Letang returns from his knee injury.
