|Assets:||Moves the puck well and owns decent overall ability from the back end. Also has a projectable 6-2 frame. Is very mobile and usually makes the safe, smart play with the puck.|
|Flaws:||Needs to fill out his big frame in order to maximize his NHL upside. Lacks a physical edge to his game, which limits his overall shutdown appeal. Isn't a high-end point producer, either.|
|Career Potential:||Mobile puck-moving defenseman with some upside.|

D Chris Tanev not feeling love from Canucks | 07/06/2014 10:09 AM
NewsChris Tanev has accepted a one-year contract with the Canucks for $2 million but he still isn't feeling the love from the organization.
ImpactTanev, who established himself as a top-four defenseman last season averaging 20:44 in 64 games, to a bargain-basement $2-million, one-year deal. The signing came hours before the deadline to file for salary arbitration. There was a feeling from Tanev's side that $2 million would be his ceiling in an arbitration award because he's not a big-time producer in measurable stats like points. But it's nowhere near what the 24-year-old would get on the open market. The key stat in arbitration for defensive defensemen, however, is ice time, and there were two RFA defensemen who've signed in the past year comparable to Tanev. Ottawa's Jared Cowen, with 158 career games to Tanev's 156, averaged 13 fewer seconds than Tanev this past season and put up 15 points. Ottawa signed Cowen in September to a four-year, $12.4-million contract. There's also Washington's Karl Alzner, who averaged 12 fewer seconds and had one more point than Tanev last season. He just finished the first year of a four-year, $1

I don't think he's ready to practice with us even starting next week," Canucks coach John Tortorella said. He was projected to be out until at least the end of February, and that seems accurate right now. The defenseman has 14 points in 54 games this season.

Chris Tanev would thrive in KHL: Canucks GM | 08/17/2013 9:44 AM
NewsChris Tanev, a restricted free agent with the Vancouver Canucks, has drawn interest from KHL clubs, and you get the impression Canuck general manager Steve Tambellini isn't trying to dissuade the defenseman from jumping.
Impact"He is a young talented defenceman who will have success in any league in the world," Tambellini wrote in an email to The Province newspaper in Vancouver. "His skill set allows him to be a very reliable player both offensively and defensively. In both the KHL and NLA (Swiss A league), he would be able to log an elite level of ice time and be a great safety half to a top defence pairing. Chris always seems to complement any partner in the NHL and that would be no different in Europe."
Agent: KHL teams interested in Chris Tanev | 08/13/2013 11:31 AM
NewsChris Tanev's agent, Ross Gurney, has revealed that his client is drawing interest from KHL clubs, but his focus is still returning to the Vancouver Canucks.
Impact"We are waiting to hear from them," Gurney said of the Canucks. "We did have some momentum for a period of time a couple of weeks back, but we haven't heard back from them since our last conversation. The only variable that has changed is that for whatever reason there seems to be an uptick in the amount of interest from the KHL." Gurney added that he has received calls from the Swiss Elite League as well. Vancouver assistant GM Laurence Gilman said Monday that he is confident that something will be worked out with Tavev, who is a restricted free agent.

Canucks' talks with Tanev move slowly | 07/16/2013 11:41 AM
NewsThe Vancouver Canucks' negotiations with restricted free agent Chris Tanev are moving slowly.
Impact"Restricted free agents without arbitration rights are in a classification all their own. There doesn't seem to be any urgency right now but, eventually, we'll make progress," Tanev's agent Ross Gurney said. The only negotiating weapon Tanev has is the possibility of an offer sheet from another team. The Canucks don't have a ton of cap room, so an opposing squad might be able to out-muscle Vancouver with a sizable contract if they're so inclined.

NewsChris Tanev's agent says the Vancouver Canucks extended a qualifying offer to his client Tuesday.

ImpactTuesday was the deadline for teams to qualify pending restricted free agents or lose them to UFA status. Tanev is only 23 years old, but remains more of a depth defenseman for Vancouver. He had two goals, seven points and a plus-4 rating in 38 games last season.

NewsThe Vancouver Canucks announced Tuesday that Chris Tanev (leg) will be sidelined indefinitely.
Cam Tucker on Twitter
ImpactCoach Alain Vigneault says he's hopeful Tanev will return in time for the postseason, which sounds to us like Tanev will miss the remainder of the regular season. Tanev doesn't have a ton of fantasy value, but he's one of the Canucks' steadier defensemen and his absence will definitely be felt.
Chris Tanev out with leg injury | 04/09/2013 11:17 AM
NewsChris Tanev was out of the Vancouver lineup Monday with a leg injury.
ImpactTanev has been one of the unsung heroes on the blueline, just being a steady defenseman for the first place Northwest Division Canucks. Consider him day-to-day for now.
Chris Tanev defends teammate Alex Edler | 03/23/2013 12:44 PM
NewsDefenseman Chris Tanev of the Vancouver Canucks doesn't like the two-game suspension to teammate Alexander Edler for the hit he laid on Phoenix Coyotes' goaltender Mike Smith on Thursday night.
Impact"He was just trying to look Alex off and hoping he wouldn't go behind the net," reasoned Chris Tanev, who skated gingerly Friday on a bothersome right foot but will play against the Los Angeles Kings Saturday. "Alex was just trying to play the puck and Smith happened to be up against the wall. I don't know really where he (Edler) could have gone. They're both big guys and it's definitely a tough play. I'm sure he (Edler) was trying to squeeze through him, but there wasn't much space to move around. Alex was just trying to get his stick. It's just one of those hockey plays, I guess."

NewsChris Tanev returned to action on Thursday March 14.
Chris Tanev suffered upper-body injury Sunday | 03/12/2013 4:08 PM
NewsChris Tanev suffered what appeared to be a hand or arm injury during Sunday's game against the Minnesota Wild.
ImpactTanev left the game after blocking a shot, but his status remains a bit of a mystery. Canucks coach Alain Vigneault said Tuesday that he has no update on Tanev. The undrafted 23-year-old blueliner isn't much a fantasy weapon so this news shouldn't affect most teams.
Chris Tanev to move up to first unit | 02/21/2013 11:53 AM
NewsLook for Chris Tanev to play alongside Alexander Edler Thursday.
ImpactHis teammates think a lot of the undrafted 23-year-old. "He's a smart player," Kevin Bieksa said. "I see a lot of similarities to Alex Burrows. When he came up, people were saying the same things about him. He wasn't a good enough skater, he didn't have a good enough shot. But he just thinks the game so well. [Tanev] is really smart. He's really high percentage. And really poised. He gets the puck, and he has pressure on him, but he holds on to the puck and he makes the best possible decision every time." While we cannot recommend Tanev in fantasy pools as he has only a goal and three points in 15 games to go with a plus-three rating and six penalty minutes, he does make for a nice story.

NewsChris Tanev netted his first NHL goal on Monday.
ImpactTanev's scored in overtime to put the Canucks past the Edmonton Oilers. It took him 63 career games to reach that feat. The blueliner isn't expected to have any fantasy value in standard leagues this season.
