"Sergei has had an impressive NHL career and has been a big contributor to Ottawa's offense over the last three seasons. We are excited to see him continue his career here in Dallas the next two years." Gonchar is 39 years old, there will obviously be questions about how much longer he can remain effective, but he certainly didn't slow down this year. He also reportedly has a deal on the table from the KHL's Matallurg Magnitogorsk that's worth more than $7 million per season, but agent J.P. Barry said Gonchar wants to play in the NHL. NewsSergei Gonchar's offer from KHL club Matallurg Magnitogorsk is reportedly worth over $7 million per season, according to sources of the Ottawa Sun.
ImpactHe is considering the deal but he would like to stay in the NHL if possible. "There's no surprise there. He's had standing offers there for years," said agent J.P. Barry. "They wanted him to come there before he signed with Ottawa. Absolutely (he wants to play in the NHL). The timing is hard for him because the free agency doesn't get done until July 5. That's why this is tough for him." He made $5.5 million with the Senators last season and according to sources the team may want to take a pay cut to return to the fold. If Gonchar wants to earn big money then his best bet may be to head to Russia, but he should attract interest from other NHL teams as a free agent as well.
