More expected from Reilly Smith in 2014-15 | 05/18/2014 6:07 AM
NewsFantasy hockey fans will be expecting more from Reilly Smith next season.
ImpactSmith came into the 2013-14 season under the radar as it was perceived that he was a throw-in in the Tyler Seguin-Loui Eriksson trade. But the former Dallas Star showed everyone that he was a top-six forward in the NHL with a 20 goal, 31 assist performance this season and then added four goals and a helper in 12 playoff games. Smith is eligible for restricted free agency in the off-season but it's hard to believe that the Bruins won't try to sign him to a new deal as quickly as possible.

That should earn him a good raise coming off his entry-level contract, but he may have to prove himself again before getting a longer term deal.
Julien benefits from sticking with Smith | 05/12/2014 12:55 PM
NewsBruins coach Claude Julien is reaping the benefits of sticking with Reilly Smith during his late season slump.
CSN New England
ImpactSmith has bounced back with three goals in his last five games. "I would say he mostly had a great season," Julien said of Smith. "Maybe for a month or so he got really quiet, but for the most part I thought he was pretty consistent. The way he's playing right now is a lot more indicative of the kind of year he's had. Every young player is going go through a lull along the way. Am I pleased with his play? Absolutely. I think he's come up big in the playoffs, and we've seen the Reilly Smith that we saw for most of the regular season." Smith was acquired as part of the blockbuster deal with Dallas that saw Tyler Seguin and Loui Eriksson swap teams. Given that Eriksson had a rough, injury-riddled debut season with Boston, the rise of Smith has prevented the trade from looking one-sided.

"I've heard - even from Dallas - enough about (Tyler) Seguin and (Jaromir) Jagr not scoring too much in the playoffs last year. It is good to get that one in the back of the net and kind of keep you guys off my back a little bit." He struggled to produce after the Olympic break, but the playoffs is a whole new season for him to rebound in.

Boston coach Claude Julien is a big fan of Smith and believes he will have no trouble adapting to NHL playoff hockey. "I don't think that he gets overly excited to a point where it effects him", Julien said. "He's pretty even keeled. Like I said before, if there's anything, he has a tendency to get hard on himself and he demands and expects a lot, but I don't think this is going to be an issue for him". Smith may make a nice late round selection in playoff pools this post-season as he plays on a line with playoff wizard Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand.

"I thought Reilly played well (in Thursday's 3-0 win over Chicago). I liked his game," said Julien. "He was on the puck more, he was creating things, and I thought the pace of his game was better. To me, Reilly took a step in the right direction (Thursday) night. We've got a few weeks to go here and, if he finds his stride like he was finding it (Thursday) night, he'll be OK." If Smith is not OK, look for Julien to move Loui Eriksson up a line and demote Smith to the Bruins' third unit.

CSN New England
ImpactSmith had an assist on Tuesday to close out a phenomenal month for him. He scored nine goals and 14 points in 13 games. I'm just trying hard not to squander it." He certainly hasn't so far with 12 goals and 28 points in 37 games this season. Smith realizes that he might be in line for a cold streak, but he's just trying to keep his game simple and work hard. So far that's served him well.

NewsReilly Smith potted two goals to lead the Bruins to a 4-1 win over the Sabres on Saturday night.
ImpactNot only has Smith quietly put together a fine season to date, with 11 goals and 25 points, he clearly likes playing on Saturdays. It's the second straight Satuday in which he's notched two goals and on the year he has six goals and 12 of his points then. In all seriousness, he needs to be owned in fantasy leagues.
