Dan Murphy on Twitter

Zack Kassian presents interesting problem | 05/10/2014 11:09 AM
NewsZack Kassian presents an interesting problem for the Vancouver Canucks.
ImpactThe right winger is about to be a restricted free agent. He has played 156 games with the Sabres and Canucks, compiling 25 goals and 25 assists. He scored 14 goals and added 15 assists in 73 games with Vancouver this season and ended stronger than he started it, with three goals and 10 points in his final 10 games, including a four-assist game against Edmonton March 23. Kassian's entry-level contract, which ended, had him making an average of $870,000 a season. His qualifying offer, according to CapGeek, would actually be lower than that. While a qualifying offer generally has to be an increase on a previous contract, part of Kassian's entry-level deal included a signing bonus and his base salary this past year was $810,000, meaning his qualifying offer would need to be, at minimum, $850,500. ImpactWith one game left in the Canucks' regular season, Sunday against Calgary in Vancouver, Kassian has 14 goals and 15 assists. He's been the Canucks' leading scorer in 16 games since the Olympic break with 12 points. The Canucks have not had a good season and won't be in the playoffs, but Kassian gives them some optimism for the future. The same is true for Shawn Matthias, who also had a goal (his 12th) and an assist (11th) for the Canucks in Edmonton.
Kassian leads Canucks in points post-break | 04/07/2014 11:05 AM
NewsZack Kassian has three goals and a team-leading 10 points in 15 games since the Olympic break.
ImpactKassian isn't known for his offensive abilities, but he's giving the Canucks a glimmer of hope that he might develop into a more well-rounded forward. "His whole game, with and without the puck, has been more consistent," Tortorella said. "And I think he has the puck more because he's been more consistent away from the puck." He has 13 goals and 27 points in 69 games this season.

ImpactHe did a little of everything today, generating that tally, getting two PIM, three SOG and one hit. His 103 PIM make his spotty scoring and so-so peripherals easier to stomach, but fantasy owners would love to see more consistent numbers from the 23-year-old power forward.

Canucks' scoring dearth puzzles Zack Kassian | 01/25/2014 11:09 AM
NewsIn 52 games this season, the Canucks rank 22nd in the NHL with 2.44 goals-per-game, a number skewed only slightly lower by scoring just 30 times in the last 17 games.
ImpactIn 30 of these 52 games, the Canucks have scored two or fewer goals. "It's the same core group that has been here for a long time, and we did not have trouble scoring goals two, three, four years ago, so we don't know what it is that has crept in," Vancouver forward Zak Kassian said, "but somehow it's getting harder to get those goals. We can't blame post-and-out (bad luck) when it's years in the making. It's not a freak couple of weeks; it has been a while now and it's something we have to work on." Assistant general manager Laurence Gilman said: "We are not scoring at a level we're happy with and that clearly has to change. Whether those changes occur because our power play starts to produce or we get greater production from players whose production is down or because we go out and acquire more scoring has yet to play out. But we need to improve our offensive level."

NewsZack Kassian registered an assist in a 2-1 victory over Winnipeg.
ImpactKassian is a physical forward that ends up spending some time in the sin bin, but not enough to justify owning him in standard leagues given his limited production offensively. He has nine points and 47 penalty minutes in 33 games this season.
Tortorella doesn't want Kassian on top line | 12/13/2013 10:55 AM
NewsEven with Alex Burrows sidelined, Canucks coach John Tortorella doesn't want 22-year-old Zack Kassian on the top line.
Impact"I'm not ready to put Zack in those situations where I am playing that line against probably the top two lines on the opposing team," Tortorella said. "We're still in the process of trying to get Zack to process the game, not only with the puck but away from the puck. So that's where I'm at there. It's tough when you have to worry about pucks going in the back of your net when players just aren't ready to read those situations." Kassian was taken with the 13th overall pick in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. He does have some offensive upside, but for now he's mostly noteworthy in fantasy circles because of his aggressive style of play. He has six points and 47 penalty minutes in 27 games this season.

ImpactKassian scored a goal, generated 10 PIM, three SOG and a hit. Even so, he remains a frustrating fantasy factor because he only has three points (all tallies) and 14 SOG in 11 GP. At least he has 19 PIM in his last four games.

I am still getting texts right now. Probably 20 or so." They will be making the trip from Windsor. He has one shot and five penalty minutes in two games this season.

Zack Kassian claims high-stick was accidental | 09/23/2013 4:03 PM
NewsZack Kassian is maintaining his innocence with regard to his high-stick which broke Sam Gagner's jaw.
Impact"Obviously, you never want to see anybody goes through that and it (high stick) was accidental and I hope he gets back sooner than later,"said Kassian. "Things happen at speed and it was a hockey play. I can sit here all day and plead my case. Both sides have their opinions of what happened and that's the way every incident works. I have to go about my business and respect the league's decision." He has an in-person hearing for the incident scheduled with the league on Monday.
Zack Kassian to get in-person hearing | 09/23/2013 11:00 AM
NewsZack Kassian will get an in-person hearing for his high-stick on the Oilers Sam Gagner Saturday.
ImpactThat's not good news as in-person hearings usually get at least a five game suspension. Kassian's hit on Gagner broke the Oilers center's jaw and it looks like he'll miss six-eight weeks. It does not bode well for Kassian so stay tuned.

NewsVancouver Canucks forward Zack Kassian faces a disciplinary hearing for his high-stick on Sam Gagner from Saturday's preseason game against the Edmonton Oilers.
Brad Ziemer on Twitter
ImpactGagner's out indefinitely with a broken jaw and Kassian has a suspension rap sheet, so there's definitely a risk here. He faces a possible opportunity to team up with the Sedin twins to start the season, so Kassian owners must hope that he doesn't miss regular season time.
Canucks want Zack Kassian to step up | 09/21/2013 3:43 PM
NewsZack Kassian is slated to get a bigger role in Vancouver this season.
Impact"I want to give him every opportunity to be a huge part of this team, and I told him that," new coach John Tortorella said at the beginning of training camp. "It's something I think the team needs as far as his willingness, as far as his playing into a bigger role. I'd like to see it happen. He's going to get the opportunity, but he's going to sink or swim himself. That's why I contacted Zack. This is a big year for him, and that's why I wanted him to step out of himself and be a big part of this club." The Canucks want to be able to play Kassian alongside the Sedin twins this season. He played with Daniel and Henrik last year and netted five goals in the first seven games there prior to heading back down the depth chart.

"My back is 100 percent and I'm really excited to get going again. I spoke to management before I went down and they stressed the things I need to work on, both on and off the ice. On the ice, it was just play the way I was early in the season, moving my feet and playing physical. Off the ice, it was just being professional, especially in a market like this. You have to be a professional." He's slated to start on the third line with Max Lapierre and Nicklas Jensen

NewsZack Kassian (back) told the medical staff and coaches he's ready to play in Edmonton tonight, but Vancouver Canucks coach Alain Vigneault didn't seem to believe it, saying he needed to get it confirmed with his trainers.

Slumping Zack Kassian trying to stay upbeat | 03/02/2013 12:10 PM
NewsSlumping Vancouver Canucks winger Zack Kassian is trying to stay upbeat after going 12 games without a goal.
ImpactAfter a red-hot start, Kassian has sunk down from the first line to the fourth and is minus-6 in his past seven games. He played a season-low 6:52 Tuesday against the Phoenix Coyotes and still was on the ice for two goals against. When things were rolling for him the first two weeks of the season, he played more than 19 minutes on three different occasions and collected his share of feel-good headlines. Now he's finding it difficult to score from the bench, or in the penalty box, but that's where Kassian has been for large stretches the past two games. "You definitely look up and say `geez, what did I do to you?' but it's a matter of staying positive," Kassian said. "The biggest thing is obviously not letting it affect the way you play. You don't want to be on the ice when the other team is scoring goals no matter how they go in. It's not fun."
Zack Kassian drops to the fourth line | 02/21/2013 12:01 PM
NewsZack Kassian lined up on the fourth line in practice Wednesday.

Zack Kassian continues hot streak | 01/31/2013 2:28 AM
NewsZack Kassian continues to take advantage of his Lottery ticket opportunity beside the Sedin twins.
ImpactThe budding power forward has all five of his 2013 season goals in the last six games. He's only fired 15 shots on goal, so he's going to need to put more rubber on the net to continue his sniping ways. One other negative: zero assists. One more positive: 12 PIM makes him have more than more dimension.
Zack Kassian scores again in 3-2 loss to LA | 01/29/2013 3:17 AM
NewsZack Kassian scored his fourth goal in five games in the 3-2 shootout loss to the LA Kings.
ImpactKassian is the latest forward to reap the benefits of riding shotgun with the Sedins. He has the three intangibles to be the perfect complement to the dynamic duo, size, skill and grit. With his size and touch he's in for a great season. He's one of the highly sought after waiver wire pickups, as he is also a great source of hits and PIM's. A must add in all formats while he's with the Sedins.
Zack Kassian makes impact for Vancouver | 01/24/2013 2:20 AM
NewsZack Kassian had his best game of the young season on Wednesday night, helping the Vancouver Canucks grab a 3-2 shootout win against the Calgary Flames.
ImpactKassian had a goal, and perhaps most impressively, logged 19:14 time on ice. That tally gives him a two-game streak, but taking that many shifts shows the rising confidence he's inspiring. His beautiful shootout goal won't mean much in most fantasy leagues, yet it shows that he's more than just a brute with a modicum of offensive skill.

The feisty winger could be a darling in rotisserie formats with his ability to score 10+ goals in a full season along with over 100 PIM. ImpactKassian injured a facet joint, which is any one of four projections that link one vertebra of the spine to an adjacent vertebra. "I've had some spasms, but nothing major," said Kassian, who has no history of back ailments. "It just takes a little time to heal. Today, I felt good on the ice and it's day by day and I'm on track to be good for training camp. I don't know how I hurt it. I woke up and it was tight and I had another little issue. Skating and playing games probably didn't help, but we've got it solved."
