Jared Cowen feels he's playing 'up and down' | 11/14/2013 10:35 AM
NewsJared Cowen feels he's still trying to find his rhythm following hip surgery last November.
Impact"It's more physical than anything," said Cowen. "My hip isn't bothering me, but it was the same way with the knee. The season after surgery is always up and down. You're playing, but you're not really playing (the way you used to). It's a tough schedule. You're playing so many games, it's tough to really feel good about what you're doing. It's just the constant battles." The 22-year-old defender has three points, 54 hits, 27 blocks and a plus-2 rating in 18 games this season.

NewsJared Cowen is rounding into form after missing the beginning of training camp to settle his contract.
Impact"The more minutes I get, the better I feel," Cowen said prior to Thursday's exhibition game against Montreal. "The biggest thing is just trying to get back into situations and being comfortable. I've only played one game since last year. I just want to get good with the puck and make better plays." He is projected to serve as a top-four defenseman this season and will probably be paired with Patrick Wiercioch.

NewsJared Cowen was paired up with Patrick Wiercioch during a scrimmage on Saturday.
ImpactCowen missed the start of training camp because he was still a restricted free agent, but he might play alongside Wiercioch again during an upcoming preseason game. "I'm glad we played (the scrimmage) because I still feel kind of like a fish out of water," Cowen said. "The more we play, the better I feel. It was obvious (Saturday) I didn't feel good at first. The more the game went on, the more comfortable I felt." Ottawa still has five preseason games left.
Senators turn the page after signing Cowen | 09/15/2013 9:41 AM
NewsThe Senators aren't concerned about the fact that Jared Cowen missed the start of training camp.
ImpactCowen was a holdout as a restricted free agent until he agreed to a four-year/$12.4 million contract on Saturday. "I know what Jared is doing at home. He's working as hard at home by himself as he would be here with his teammates. He's going to come in here and, I believe, not miss a beat," Senators assistant GM Tim Murray predicted. Cowen is projected to serve on Ottawa's second pairing.

Report: Jared Cowen to sign four year deal | 09/14/2013 7:38 AM
NewsThe Ottawa Sun is reporting that Jared Cowen will sign a four-year/$12 million deal on Saturday.
ImpactIt was a tough negotiation for both sides as the Senators wanted to lock him up long-term for eight years for $28 million but Cowen's side was looking for more money and fewer years. Cowen will likely join the Senators in Saskatoon Monday where he has been practicing as Ottawa has a pre-season match there. "A four year deal is fair for both sides," assistant GM Tim Murray said. "He gets to establish himself what they believe as a top player. He'll have one year of restricted free agency after the deal he could hit a home run. We're both on the same side on the term." The ninth pick of the 2009 Draft has played only 89 regular season games. He is not a big scorer so do not draft him in traditional leagues.
Sens on Cowen: Latest offer's more than fair | 09/13/2013 1:55 PM
NewsSenators assistant GM Tim Murray thinks the Senators have already made Jared Cowen an offer that's "way beyond any statistical comparables."
Impact"I don't want to say our last deal was a drop-dead final one, but our last deal was, I gotta tell you, was an extremely lucrative deal for the player, and I really can't see going beyond that right now," Murray said. Cowen is still a restricted free agent and at this point it sounds like the two sides have reached an impasse. That being said, the Senators and Cowen plan to have a face-to-face meeting soon and that might help them come to an agreement.

I guess the term is you `negotiate against yourself'. So, there's some hope we can get some communication going here fairly quickly, so Jared can give us an indication (of something), one way or another." According to a recent report, Ottawa has submitted Cowen with four contracts of varying length, but as of Friday they were still waiting for a response.
