Leafs scratched Jake Gardiner on Wednesday | 11/28/2013 11:14 AM
NewsJake Gardiner was a healthy scratch Wednesday night.
ImpactIt was the first time this season that he watched from the press box. Gardiner struggled in Monday's loss to Columbus and he hasn't produced much offense this season. He has no goals and five assists in 24 appearances.
Gardiner has just five points this season | 11/24/2013 10:59 AM
NewsJake Gardiner registered an assist in Toronto's 2-1 shootout win against Washington.
ImpactAfter recording 30 points in his rookie season, Gardiner has just five assists in 23 games in 2013-14. He definitely has plenty of offensive upside, but we would recommend taking a wait-and-see approach rather than stashing him on your bench in a standard league.
Jake Gardiner played well vs. Boston again | 11/11/2013 11:05 AM
NewsJake Gardiner seems to like playing against the Boston Bruins.
ImpactHe was excellent for Toronto in the playoffs versus Boston, with five points in six games, and had seven shots over 19:31 of ice time in Saturday's 3-1 defeat. Gardiner has only three assists in 17 games this campaign, but more performances like this would go a long way to helping him turn his misfortunes around.
Jake Gardiner trying to find his groove | 10/24/2013 11:47 AM
NewsJake Gardiner is still getting re-adjusted this season, while trying to get back to the level he displayed during the playoffs.
Impact"Definitely not there right now, but I don't think anyone is at that level," Gardiner said. "Playing my off-side is something to get used to and playing with a new partner (Paul Ranger) is something to get comfortable with and get that chemistry. I think we have been working toward that, but we still need some work." He has two assists in 10 games and he's been averaging 19:41 of ice time per contest.
Jake Gardiner in lineup vs. Flyers | 10/02/2013 7:21 PM
NewsJake Gardiner will be paired with Mark Fraser against Philadelphia Wednesday night.

ImpactThere was some talk that Gardiner might spend Wednesday night watching from the press box after a lackluster effort against the Canadiens, but coach Randy Carlyle decided instead to have him skate with a more defensive-minded partner than Cody Franson, who he played with on Tuesday.
Jake Gardiner has not played well in camp | 09/28/2013 11:53 AM
NewsJake Gardiner has not been particularly impressive in the Leafs' training camp to date.
Mark Masters on Twitter
ImpactToronto coach Randy Carlyle was pretty candid about Gardiner not picking up where he left off last season. When asked if Gardiner was playing as well as he did in the playoff last season, Carlyle said "no no he's not". Those looking for a breakout season from Gardiner may have to temper their expectations. His current level of play and the re-signing of Cody Franson have hurt his fantasy value.
Gardiner blossoming before our eyes | 05/11/2013 1:28 PM
NewsJake Gardiner has been one of the best Maple Leaf players the past two games.
ImpactHe has been outstanding moving the puck out of the Toronto zone with his smooth-skating ability. Gardiner has also been solid defensively taking the Bruin forwards out with efficent positioning and physicality. Gardnier has been rewarded for his fine play with ice time. He led all Toronto skaters with 24:05 minutes of ice time in Game 6.
Carlyle sees elevation in Gardiner's play | 05/10/2013 4:55 PM
NewsCoach Randy Carlyle praised the play of Jake Gardiner Friday prior to Game 5 of Toronto's first-round playoff series against Boston.
Globe and Mail
Impact"I think Jake is moving better than at any time he's moved this year," Carlyle said. "I think his competitiveness on the defensive side of the puck has gone up dramatically from where he was at Christmas when he came back. ... He's elevated his game here in the playoffs - he has an element that every team would like." Gardiner has picked up a point in three straight games since getting back into the lineup. He has a goal and three assists in the first three playoff appearances of his career.
Jake Gardiner adds two more assists | 05/09/2013 1:57 PM
NewsJake Gardiner posted two assists and a plus-1 rating in Toronto's overtime loss against Boston Wednesday night.
ImpactThe 22-year-old blueliner has displayed plenty of mobility, while picking up four points in three playoff games for the Leafs. Gardiner played in just 12 games during the regular season, where he accounted for four assists. He still makes some defensive miscues, but even that part of his game has seen some improvement in the postseason which has led to more ice time from the coaching staff.
Jake Gardiner scores first NHL playoff goal | 05/06/2013 10:58 PM
NewsJake Gardiner scored his first career NHL postseason goal in Monday's 5-2 loss to the Boston Bruins.
ImpactGardiner's goal was also the Maple Leafs' first home playoff goal since 2004 and the tally sent off a raucous celebration inside and outside of the Air Canada Centre. Unfortunately for all of Toronto, the Bruins scored 50 seconds later and again two minutes after that. The Maple Leafs likely need to win Wednesday night to ensure to the series heads back to Toronto for Game 6.
Jake Gardiner proves his worth against Bruins | 05/05/2013 7:33 AM
NewsJake Gardiner enjoyed a solid game for the Maple Leafs in Saturday's 4-2 win over the Bruins.
ImpactGardiner was a healthy scratch for the series opener, but after the team struggled with its breakout passes it became clear Gardiner's puck handling skills were needed. The slick blue liner shook off a first period giveaway and his calm demeanor while carrying the puck proved invaluable for Toronto. Of all the players inserted into the Maple Leafs' lineup for Game 2, Gardiner has the greatest chance to make a long-term impact on their playoff run.
Gardiner to draw back in for Game 2 v Bruins | 05/04/2013 10:57 AM
NewsLook for Jake Gardiner to draw back into the Toronto lineup against the Bruins for Game 2 Saturday night.
ImpactWith Mike Kostka out with a broken finger and John-Michael Liles being a healthy scratch due to ineffectiveness, Gardiner will suit up and skate with Ryan O'Byrne on the Buds' third defenseman pairing. Feel free to activate him if you need a defenseman in your lineup.
Jake Gardiner back in the lineup Saturday | 04/14/2013 11:54 AM
NewsJake Gardiner returned to the lineup Saturday in place of John-Michael Liles.
ImpactGardiner was a healthy scratch for five of the Leafs' last six contests but led the Buds with nearly 24 minutes of ice-time in the win over Montreal Saturday night. "I thought Jake Gardiner had one of his better games; he skated, he moved the puck, I didn't think he was a liability defensively, I thought he had a good game," said coach Carlyle. Gardiner is an NHL-level talent who shouldn't be forgotten in fantasy circles for next year's draft. Gardiner was first among NHL rookie blueliners in points last season with 30 in 75 games but still needs work on his defensive game.
Gardiner could return to lineup v Habs | 04/13/2013 12:58 PM
NewsDon't be surprised is Jake Gardiner returns to the Maple Leaf lineup against Montreal Saturday night.
Jonas Siegel Twitter
ImpactHe was a healthy scratch for five of the Buds' last six contests. If Gardiner does play, it may be at the expense of John-Micahel Liles who struggled in games this week.
Jake Gardiner continues to sit in limbo | 04/10/2013 12:05 PM
NewsJake Gardiner returned to the press box in Monday's win over the New York Rangers.
ImpactHe has watched four of Toronto's past five games as a healthy scratch. "I'm not sure what's going on," Gardiner said Tuesday. "I feel like I can definitely contribute. I'm going to do whatever the team needs to win. I'm just going to try to contribute any way I can." Coach Randy Carlyle still thinks Gardiner is a little too raw in the defensive zone and may not want to have him out there with the Leafs trying to secure a playoff spot. The problem for Gardiner is that he can't be sent down without having to pass through waivers and he would certainly be claimed by another team if that happened. He's still a very good fantasy prospect, but it doesn't look he'll have much value for the remainder of the year.
Jake Gardiner back in the lineup Saturday | 04/07/2013 11:08 AM
NewsJake Gardiner returned to the lineup Saturday night following a three-game stint in the press box.
ImpactGardiner is an NHL-level talent who shouldn't be forgotten in fantasy circles for next year's draft. Gardiner was first among NHL rookie blueliners in points last season with 30 in 75 games.
Jake Gardiner healthy scratch Thursday night | 03/29/2013 11:11 AM
NewsJake Gardiner found himself as a healthy scratch Thursday less than 10 days after being recalled from the AHL.
Jonas Siegel on Twitter
ImpactThe Leafs' decision to leave Gardiner in the AHL was a hotly debated topic for months before they recalled him last Tuesday, so it's a little surprising that he found himself in the press box already. The smooth-skating defenseman said Friday morning that he got the message from coach Randy Carlyle. "I think Randy wants me to hit guys more, not necessarily hit them I guess, just finish my check," Gardiner said. We'll have to see if he gets to implement that again Saturday night.
Jake Gardiner set to play Wednesday | 03/20/2013 1:15 PM
NewsJake Gardiner will suit up for Toronto Wednesday night after being called up from the minors on Tuesday.
ImpactHe will be paired with John-Micheal Liles against Tampa Bay. "My mindset is to just to play my game and help the Leafs get some wins," he said. "I'm getting a second chance. I have to make sure I help get this team a win." The smooth-skating defenseman should add some mobility to Toronto's back end and he should get some power-play time versus the Lightning.
Maple Leafs recall Jake Gardiner from AHL | 03/19/2013 3:59 PM
NewsToronto Maple Leafs recall Jake Gardiner from AHL Toronto.
James Mirtle on Twitter
ImpactIt sounds like the pleas of Gardiner's agent finally reached the doors of Dave Nonis. More likely, however, the odds that Nonis simply couldn't leave Gardiner in the AHL anymore. The Minnesota native has 10 goals and 31 points in 43 games with the Marlies this season, which is something the big league club could seriously use on its blue line. Now that he's back in the NHL, we recommend picking up in most leagues.
Jake Gardiner won't be summoned - yet | 03/13/2013 3:54 PM
NewsIt sounds like Jake Gardiner won't be called up yet despite his agent, Ben Hankinson, pleas via Twitter.
James Mirtle on Twitter
ImpactHankinson used the hashtag FreeJakeGardiner on Twitter Tuesday night, which started a stir. Gardiner has 10 goals and 30 points in 40 games, so it's not hard to see why there are those who would like to see the Toronto Maple Leafs give him another shot, especially after he had 30 points in 75 NHL contests last season. "[We want him at a level] where he's probably too good for the AHL," Leafs coach Randy Carlyle explained. "And I haven't heard anybody tell me that he has." He's worth picking up whenever the Leafs summon him.
Agent wants Leafs to 'free' Jake Gardiner | 03/13/2013 9:23 AM
NewsJake Gardiner's Minnesota-based agent, Ben Hankinson, caused a stir on Twitter last night after Tuesday's loss in Winnipeg.
ImpactHe tweeted: "#FreeJakeGardiner," which has over 500 retweets. Gardiner has been stuck in the minors since recovering from his concussion. The Leafs have eight defensemen on their roster and would need to make some roster decisions to bring Gardiner up. He has accumulated 10 goals and 30 points in 40 AHL games this campaign and has skated in just two games with the Maple Leafs. Toronto could also reinstate John-Michael Liles from the press box to add some mobility to their back end in the meantime.
Jake Gardiner has to stay in the AHL for now | 02/20/2013 4:53 PM
NewsJake Gardiner has been very well in the AHL and appears to have put his concussion issue behind him.
ImpactHe logged 34 minutes of ice time and contributed an assist in the Marlies' 2-1 loss to Houston on Monday. Unfortunately, the Maple Leafs don't have a spot for him on their roster right now barring a trade or an injury and whoever he replaces would have to clear waivers to be sent down. Gardiner can also only play three more NHL games before he has to start clearing waivers himself to be shuttled between the Marlies and the Leafs. He has been great in the AHL this campaign with nine goals and 22 points in 31 games. Make no mistake though, Gardiner is an NHL-level talent who shouldn't be forgotten in fantasy circles. He just may have to wait a little to get his chance again and will continue to improve in the minors until then.
Leafs return Jake Gardiner to AHL | 01/30/2013 8:01 PM
NewsAs expected, Jake Gardiner has been returned to the AHL by the Maple Leafs.
ImpactHe returned to action last Wednesday after being out since December 8 with a concussion and played on Thursday as well. However, the team feels he needs to work himself back into shape and that he'd be better off doing that in the minors.
Jake Gardiner won't play Tuesday night | 01/29/2013 8:02 PM
NewsJake Gardiner won't play Tuesday night while he works his way back from a concussion.

ImpactGardiner had been labeled a "coach's decision" for Tuesday's game against Buffalo and we expect that will be his status again for Saturday's game against Boston if he's still with the Leafs. Coach Randy Carlyle said earlier Tuesday that returning Gardiner to the AHL later this week is still very much in play.
Leafs say Jake Gardiner a 'coach's decision' | 01/29/2013 3:20 PM
NewsJake Gardiner is still trying to work his way back from a concussion and is a "coach's decision" Tuesday night vs. Buffalo.
ImpactGardiner was originally assigned to the Toronto Marlies but rejoined the Leafs due to the AHL's All-Star break. Gardiner hasn't look like himself since returning to action and we'd be surprised if he was in the lineup tonight. Coach Randy Carlyle said returning Gardiner to the AHL later this week is still very much in play.
Jake Gardiner likely to return to AHL | 01/28/2013 1:42 PM
NewsJake Gardiner, who is working his way back from concussion-like symptoms, is up with the Leafs because the AHL is on their all-star break.
ImpactIt is expected that Gardiner, who skated with the Leafs on Monday, will be returned to get more conditioning in the minors once the all-star festivities are over. The AHL resumes action on Thursday and the Toronto Marlies play Friday.

Leafs will have Jake Gardiner back vs. Pens | 01/23/2013 5:27 PM
NewsJake Gardiner has been activated for Wednesday night's game against Pittsburgh.
ImpactHe will make his season debut after being sidelined since December 8 with concussion and whiplash symptoms. Gardiner was first among NHL rookie blueliners in points last season with 30 in 75 games. He should get some power-play time and help Toronto's transition game. Get him back in your lineup if you normally would.
Jake Gardiner not ruled out for Wednesday | 01/23/2013 4:33 PM
NewsJake Gardiner (neck/head) hasn't been ruled out for Wednesday's game against Pittsburgh.
ImpactHowever, don't be surprised if the Leafs decide to hold him out for another game after coach Randy Carlyle speaks with team doctors and management before making a decision on the young defenseman's status. Gardiner has declared himself fit to play and he's just waiting for the green light from the doctors.

NewsRandy Carlyle says Jake Gardiner (concussion/whiplash symptoms) skated Tuesday and could play in Saturday's season opener.
Jonas Siegel on Twitter
ImpactGardiner hasn't played since suffering a concussion after a hit to the head Dec. 8, so it's surprising that he's even an option Saturday. Concussions have different timetables for each player, so owners who drafted Gardiner in keeper leagues will just have to wait and see if he progresses in time to play Saturday.
