Joe Colborne hopes to avoid arbitration | 07/16/2014 10:02 PM
NewsJoe Colborne wants to avoid his arbitration hearing on August 1 if possible.
ImpactThe hearing would be moot if the Flames and Colborne agree to terms before it starts. The arbitration process can be tough on a player as he has to sit there and listen to all the reasons the team feels like he's not worth as much as he claims. "I've seen a few guys go through the whole situation," Colborne said. "I've heard when you go in there and your agents are talking, you feel like the biggest human alive. You feel like you're a superhero. And then the team comes in and you don't feel quite so big after all, and you come out of like you've been through the ringer."

Joe Colborne preps for game against old team | 04/01/2014 9:22 AM
NewsJoe Colborne will play against his former Toronto Maple Leafs at a time when the team has hit a low point.
ImpactToronto has lost eight games in a row in regulation time and the Calgary Flames will attempt to make it nine. On Colborne's end, he admitted that Tuesday's contest will be emotional for him. "Obviously, it's where I played my first game, my first playoff game - that was one of the coolest moments of my life," Colborne said. "It's going to be a fun game. We're going to be battling hard. We know how much these two points mean to them." Realistically, Toronto has already been eliminated from the playoffs, but if they win all six of their remaining games, there's at least a chance that they will end up with a Wild Card spot. If Calgary beats Toronto Tuesday night, that faint hope will be gone.

Colborne went to Camrose over the Olympic break to be there for the event. "It's just such an honour," said Colborne. "It still is a shock. When Boris (Rybalka) called me in the summer and kind of mentioned that they had been thinking about it for a while and wanted to use the Olympic break, it kind of blew my mind."

NewsJoe Colborne vented his frustration over the Calgary Flames anemic offense.
ImpactCalgary has been shut out of four of its last six games. "No matter what anyone says, it's frustrating when we're not scoring," Colborne said. "When you score one goal in four games, that's something you take to heart. You keep trying to look at the positives, but this is a results-based business. When you're not getting the results, it's frustrating. We're all competitors. It sucks to lose. It wears on you. We have to start stringing something together." Calgary is near the bottom of the pack with a 15-22-6 record. We wouldn't count on them bouncing back in the second half of 2013-14.

ImpactColborne grew up a huge Flames fan and can't wait to play his first full game at the Saddledome. He'll likely fit into the third spot at center on the Flames depth chart and expect him to stay there all season. The Flames are excited to have a big (six foot five inch) center and think he is NHL-ready. Look for Colborne to get 8-10 goals and 25 points so he should not be on your fantasy radar at this time.
Brian Burke aided in Colborne trade | 09/29/2013 5:59 AM
NewsBrian Burke's advice helped the Flames decision in trading for Joe Colborne.
ImpactIt's the second time that Burke has been involved in the trading for Colborne as he was the Maple Leafs GM when they picked him up as part of the Tomas Kaberle. "With the opportunity to speak with Brian Burke and learn about Joe's hockey sense and character from someone who had him as a player and knows him so well, it became clear to us that this is the type of young, big center we need," Flames GM Jay Feaster said in a statement. "He fits in very well with our rebuild and provides size up the middle which we believe is critical going forward. The fact that he is from Calgary is an added bonus. We look forward to welcoming him to the Flames family." Look for Colborne to fit in as a bottom two center and get 10 goals with 25 points if he plays a full season.
Flames acquire Joe Colborne from Leafs | 09/29/2013 12:20 AM
NewsThe Flames acquired Joe Colborne from the Maple Leafs for a conditional fourth-round pick in the 2014 draft.
ImpactThe pick becomes a third-rounder if Colborne registers 10 goals and 35 points and Calgary makes the playoffs (very unlikely). This is the first of many moves that should transpire across the NHL over the next day or so as teams cut down their rosters and get under the salary cap. In 65 games in the AHL last season, Colborne had 14 goals and 42 points, and he's recorded six points in 16 NHL games. He'll get a nice opportunity with the rebuilding Flames.
Joe Colborne likely to make the Leafs in 2013 | 09/14/2013 8:43 AM
NewsLook for Joe Colborne to make the opening night roster of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
ImpactThe highly regarded forward has troubles over the last two seasons due to wrist problems but the Maple Leafs cannot send him back to the minors without going through waivers and it is unlikely they will do that with the former first round pick. "I want to be a Leaf," said Colborne. "I've had so much fun here. The organization has done so much for me, I would like to be here for a long time. I love the attitude of the whole program. I love the hard work that we have to do. I like the direction the organization is going and I want to be a part of it." Colborne will not have fantasy value as he will be a bottom six forward if he makes the team so do not draft him unless he is a close friend or family member.

NewsJoe Colborne bulked up over the summer, adding more than 10 pounds of muscle to his towering six-foot-five frame.
ImpactThe Toronto forward said he tips the scales at well over 220 pounds now. Colborne worked hard on his leg strength during the off-season and he's expected to compete for a roster spot at training camp. "I was thankful for the opportunity in the playoffs last spring, and I think I made a good first impression ... now I've got to carry that forward and just show them what I can do," he said.

He had two shots in just over 15 minutes of ice time while playing between Joffrey Lupul and Matt Frattin for most of the night. Colborne replaced Tyler Bozak in the lineup, but he may have stepped on the toes of coach Randy Carlyle when he admitted to the media that he knew he would play after Game 5. "Randy wanted to throw you guys for a bit of a loop," he said. "We kept it real quiet. I wasn't able to tell anyone outside of my parents, and I made them swear they wouldn't be letting that slip." The Leafs bench boss didn't appear to be happy when the Toronto Star told him about Colborne's comments. If Bozak can't play in Game 7 then it's possible that Colborne will play again.
