NewsIt is unclear how Capitals defenseman John Carlson fits in new head coach Barry Trotz's system with a healthy Mike Green and the addition of Matt Niskanen.
ImpactAll three are offensive defenseman and will compete for playing-time on the power play. Carlson should, however, receive top-four defenseman minutes and play some on the secondary power-play unit. Carlson has far less risk than Green or Niskanen because Carlson has not missed a regular-season game since his rookie year.

NewsNew Washington coach Barry Trotz wants to see more consistency from his defensemen when he takes over the club.
Impact"We have to get some consistency on the back end, and when I say the back end, I mean our whole defensive five-on-five game," he said. "There's got to be a consistency factor on the back end. We've got some really good people in [John] Carlson and [Karl] Alzner and [Dmitry] Orlov. That group has to be a little more consistent, especially around the net, the small-area game." He wants to emphasize better puck management and making good decisions to get into the offensive zone.

NewsJohn Carlson believes he has what it takes to represent the United States at the Winter Olympics.
Impact"I have confidence in myself. I always have," said Carlson. "I've got to answer those questions about where I fit for myself, and I do think I'm good enough to make the team, but it's not up to me. I have a lot of work to do first. I need to have a good season, and also I've got to have a good season for the Cap." Team USA will open their orientation camp at Kettler Capitals Iceplex in Arlington today. Carlson is a good puck moving and he can skate, which are valuable skills on the bigger ice used for international play, so he'll be watched closely when the NHL season begins.
John Carlson thinks new system will help Caps | 04/30/2013 7:35 PM
NewsJohn Carlson feels the key to defeating the Rangers in first round of the postseason is to take what made the Capitals last year and blend it with their higher tempo style.
Impact"It plays to our strengths a little bit," Carlson said. "If we can take that commitment level that we had last year in that series into this one with our system and our skills, I think we're a really good team." Washington played in a defensive shell last year under Dale Hunter, but with coach Adam Oates they have been given more freedom to create offense and get in on the forecheck. Committing to blocking shots and being able to grind out wins will be important against a Rangers team that prides themselves in playing that kind of game.
