|Assets:||An unselfish and gifted playmaker, he's a strong possession-type puckhandler with good vision and supreme passing skills. He's also a pretty versatile forward.|
|Flaws:||Doesn't shoot the puck nearly enough, which hurts his overall value. Not very big or fast, he can also be a liability at times because of his lack of physicality. Lacks consistency.|
|Career Potential:||Inconsistent but creative and versatile playmaker.|

Ville Leino will be a healthy scratch Tuesday | 12/10/2013 4:36 PM
NewsVille Leino will spend Tuesday's game in the press box.
ImpactIt's hard to blame Sabres coach Ted Nolan given that Leino has no goals and five assists in 18 games this season. "Certain players with a certain skill set, they have to bring it," Nolan said. "And if you're not going to play as well as you can, sometimes it's better off to sit and observe for a while. And hopefully when he gets back in here, he plays the way he's capable of playing." Leino certainly might bounce back, but he's not worth taking a chance on in standard leagues at this time.
No goals yet for Buffalo's Ville Leino | 12/04/2013 6:39 AM
NewsVille Leino doesn't have a goal in 16 games this year.
ImpactHe has contributed five assists during that time and two of them came in last Friday's win over Toronto. Leino was recently moved to center to try to give him the puck more, but it hasn't led to more shots or any goals for the offensively starved Sabres.
Leino plays center on Sabres' second line | 11/16/2013 9:42 AM
NewsVille Leino centered the Sabres' second line Friday night against Toronto.
ImpactHe skated between Steve Ott and Tyler Ennis. Ott had a dominating game and Ennis is much more confortable on the wing than he is at center. Look for this line to stay together in the near term, making Leino an interesting player to watch. This unit could be surprisingly effective going forward.
Ville Leino gets put back in Sabres' lineup | 11/12/2013 5:41 PM
NewsVille Leino will be reinserted back into the Sabres' lineup on Tuesday.
ImpactLeino spent Friday's game in the press box, although coach Ron Rolston didn't speak to him specifically about the decision. "There's no point in guessing," Leino said. "I don't think it really matters at this point." Leino has just one point in seven games this season.
Can't blame Leino for 6-2 loss to Ducks | 11/09/2013 9:08 AM
NewsVille Leino was a healthy scratch against the Ducks Friday night.
ImpactWell at least he can't be blamed for that terrible 6-2 effort in Anaheim. Mikhail Grigorenko took his place in the lineup and scored his first two goals of the season. With the Sabres floundering as badly as they are, Leino is sure to get another chance to play soon.
Ville Leino picks up an assist in return | 10/27/2013 9:19 AM
NewsVille Leino had an assist in his return from cracked ribs.
ImpactLeino was limited to just 9:56 minutes of ice time, but his responsibilities should increase now that he's had an opportunity to shake off some of the rust. This was his first game since Oct. 2.

NewsVille Leino was activated from the IL on Saturday October 26.
Ville Leino (rib) might return Saturday night | 10/26/2013 3:02 PM
NewsVille Leino (rib) could be in the lineup for Buffalo on Saturday night.
ImpactHe said he is "feeling good" and that his broken rib isn't giving him any issues. Leino is a "possibility" to play against the Tampa Bay Lightning, according to coach Ron Rolston. "He's obviously a veteran presence here," Rolston said. "He's got the ability to create offense and control the puck, so it'll be a help, but he hasn't played for a while, too, so it's going to take him a bit, I'm sure." Leino has been sidelined since Oct. 2 and the Sabres would need to open a roster spot to take him off injured reserve.
Ville Leino out at least two more games | 10/25/2013 2:43 PM
NewsVille Leino (ribs) will not return on Friday or Saturday.
ImpactLeino is still a possibility to play on Monday. "It's basically about him getting back in shape now, and being comfortable doing what he's gotta do when he's playing," said Sabres coach Ron Rolston. "That's taking hits and getting hit. And if he's gonna have the puck he's gonna get hit. So he's gotta be ready for that and comfortable with that, so it's probably going to be next week." Leino has only played in one game this season.

Ville Leino feels positive about '13-14 | 09/13/2013 8:45 AM
NewsVille Leino feels healthy and excited for the upcoming season.
Impact"New start, new coach. I'm playing right wing, which is my favorite spot. I'm healthy," he said. "Everything is going the way you want it to go at this point and I'm really excited to go back out there. It's a new start and almost like I didn't play for a year." He underwent surgery on his right hip over the summer and appeared in just eight games last year. Leino opened camp alongside Mikhail Grigorenko and Steve Ott. Even though he's healthier, Leino is still a very risky pick going into draft day.

ImpactSabres coach Ron Rolston described it as a "muscle strain" and is hopeful that Leino will play on Tuesday. Leino has two goals and six points in eight games due to a hip injury.

ImpactThe Sabres will need to remove someone from their roster in order to activate Leino, who hasn't played yet this season because of a hip injury. Forwards Brian Flynn and Marcus Foligno don't have to clear waivers to be sent down, but interim coach Ron Rolston will discuss who to demote or possibly trade with GM Darcy Regier before a decision is made.
Ville Leino unlikely to play Tuesday vs. NYR | 03/12/2013 11:47 AM
NewsVille Leino (hip) is unlikely to make his return to the lineup Tuesday against the New York Rangers.
John Vogl on Twitter
ImpactLeino has been practicing with the team and is on the verge of returning. The Sabres don't play again after Tuesday's contest until Saturday afternoon in Ottawa, so it's entirely possible the team just wanted to take one more game to evaluate the roster before clearing space for Leino.
Ville Leino will be a game-time call Tuesday | 03/11/2013 2:51 PM
NewsVille Leino (hip) is projected to be a game-time decision for Tuesday night's game versus the New York Rangers.
Impact"I feel really good, so we'll see," said Leino Monday after he wasn't able to return against Philadelphia on Sunday. "It would have been good extra momentum to play against an old team and a fun rink to play, so it would have been good. But we're looking at this day now, and we'll go from there." He hasn't played yet this season because of a hip injury.
Ville Leino (hip) doubtful Sunday vs Flyers | 03/08/2013 6:18 PM
NewsVille Leino (hip) isn't likely to make his season debut on Sunday against the Philadelphia Flyers.
ImpactLeino was hoping to participate in that game, but Sabres coach Ron Rolston doesn't sound optimistic. "We're just trying to get him back into practice and get him quality practice time," Rolston said. "Really grinding, get him in more competitive situations. It will be close. I don't know when. I would doubt Sunday but certainly next week a strong possibility."
Ville Leino targets Sunday for season debut | 03/06/2013 4:32 PM
NewsVille Leino (hip) is hoping to return to Buffalo's lineup Sunday against his former team in Philadelphia.
Impact"Philly would probably be one of the good options here," he said following Wednesday's practice. "I'm having a lot of fun out there. I wish practices would run longer, and that normally doesn't happen during the season. It's pretty exciting." Leino hasn't played yet this season because of a hip injury.
Ville Leino (hips) skates Saturday morning | 02/23/2013 4:34 PM
NewsVille Leino (hip) was able to participate in Buffalo's Saturday morning skate.
Impact"I felt surprisingly good," Leino said. "It was definitely positive. We'll try to build on that, and we'll see later on today and tomorrow how it recovers from that. It's really definitely felt the best I've felt so far. To be honest with you, before today I was having my doubts. It's not like I can say now I'll play in a couple days or so, but today I really was positive and feel good about it. Now I'm trusting more it will happen soon." There's still no timetable for his return, but this is obviously an encouraging development.

ImpactSurgery hasn't been brought up yet, but coach Lindy Ruff is concerned that Leino may not play this season. "I guess the answer would be yes because he hasn't played yet," Ruff said. "We're trying a different type of treatment again for what he has. You hope you can gain some traction from it. The answer is I don't know."
Coach worried Leino (hip) might miss season | 02/04/2013 3:28 PM
NewsVille Leino (hip) might not be able to play this season, according to Sabres coach Lindy Ruff.
ImpactLeino hasn't been improving and he might end up needing surgery. "This latest treatment option we hope will work," Ruff said. "Surgery is always the the end of the line. You go to a surgeon, he's going to recommend surgery. That's just the way it goes." Leino had a rough debut season with the Sabres, but he had 53 points in 81 games in 2010-11.
Ruff denies that Ville Leino needs surgery | 01/25/2013 2:11 PM
NewsSabres coach Lindy Ruff denied a report that Ville Leino will require surgery on his injured hip.
Impact"There's no talk about surgery right now. We might as well just squash that," Ruff said. "Maybe down the road it happens. I don't know. But right now there's some other treatment options that are possible. We had an MRI on it and it looked OK. These hip things are things that can go a lot of different directions." If Leino does end up needing surgery, he probably won't be able to return before the end of the shortened season.

Ville Leino is questionnable for Sunday | 01/20/2013 11:33 AM
NewsVille Leino's status for Sunday's game against the Flyers is uncertain due to a leg injury.
ImpactLeino is coming off a very disappointing season where he recorded 25 points in 71 games. Given the team's depth, a comeback is far from certain, but he's at least worth keeping an eye on in 14-team leagues during the early weeks of the season.
