Injured Flames might lean on Mikael Backlund | 11/29/2013 8:58 AM
NewsMikael Backlund might find his way off of the fourth line with Sean Monahan (foot) sidelined.
Impact"I feel bad for Monny, but I'm ready to do it," Backlund said. "I'm going to do my best and see what happens." This situation is worth keeping an eye on. Backlund has two goals and seven points in 23 games this season.
Mikael Backlund bounces back well with Flames | 11/09/2013 9:55 AM
NewsMikael Backlund bounced back nicely for the Calgary Flames Friday night.
ImpactA healthy scratch last week against the Toronto Maple Leafs and a member most of the season of the Flames' fourth line, Backlund was flanked Friday by top-line players Michael Cammalleri and Jiri Hudler and made the most of his promotion, earning assists on both of Cammalleri's goals in a 4-2 loss to the Avalanche at Colorado. The Calgary Sun says Backlund looked like his old self.
Backlund hopes to bounce back from scratch | 11/01/2013 8:45 AM
NewsMikael Backlund is trying to stay positive after being a healthy scratch on Wednesday.
Impact"It wasn't a bad start, I (just needed) a little better flow out there offensively," Backlund said. "I just never seemed to get it going. That's all my own fault ... but I'm still patient and I believe in myself." It looks like he'll return on Friday, but as a fourth liner.
Mikael Backlund a healthy scratch Wednesday | 10/31/2013 4:54 AM
NewsMikael Backlund was a healthy scratch on Wednesday for the first time this season as coach Bob Hartley is not happy with his play.
ImpactBacklund had two goals and four points in 11 games heading into action Wednesday but was placed on the fourth line Saturday and dropped from the lineup against Toronto as Hartley went with Tim Jackman to give the Flames a tougher lineup. "Toronto is a big, physical, tough team," Hartley said. "We needed to add some muscle and I sat with Backs. I'm a big fan of this young man . . . I told him I need more from him. I'm not pleased with his game and so is he. He's man enough he said he needs to do more. It was not a message or anything, but I told him if he was playing better and contributing offensively in a better way." Expect to see Backlund back in the lineup against the Red Wings but we cannot recommend him at this time.
Mikael Backlund missed practice Saturday | 10/14/2013 5:29 AM
NewsMikael Backlund missed practice on Saturday due to some minor bruises.
ImpactThe Flames are blocking more shots this season and one of the drawbacks will be actually getting hit by the shot and picking up the occasional bruise when the puck does not hit the equipment. Backlund is poised for a breakout season as he has a goal and two helpers in five games. He should be ready to go when the Flames play in Anaheim Wednesday.
Mikael Backlund re-ups with Flames for 2 yrs | 07/10/2013 4:55 PM
NewsMikael Backlund signed a two-year contract worth $3 million with the Flames.
ImpactThe 24-year-old netted eight goals and chipped in with eight more assists this past season. "Mikael really stepped-up last season and took advantage of the change in direction under a new coaching staff," said Flames general manager Jay Feaster. "He came into camp in very good shape and also had regained his confidence. He parlayed that into a strong season, and if it wasn't for his injury we believe he would have progressed even further in his development. We need Mikael to be one of our go-to players this year, and we are excited about watching him continue to evolve and take that step to the next level as a player."
Flames expected to qualify four RFAs Tuesday | 07/02/2013 10:32 AM
NewsThe Flames are expected to officially extend qualifying offers to center Mikael Backlund and defensemen T.J. Brodie, Chris Butler and Mark Cundari on Tuesday.
ImpactThe team needs to file paperwork before the deadline Tuesday in order to ensure all four players remain restricted free agents. Of course, anyone who remembers the Blackhawks fiasco from a few years ago knows that RFA paperwork can always go sideways. Backlund and Brodie are particularly important pieces for Calgary moving forward and should remain under Flames control.
Flames say Mikael Backlund has foot fracture | 04/29/2013 8:15 PM
NewsMikael Backlund has a right foot fracture and won't play for Sweden in the world championships.
Flames on Twitter
ImpactBacklund had eight goals and 16 points in 32 games this season, although it's now fair to wonder how long he's been playing with this injury considering he played through the final game of the year. Backlund is scheduled for restricted free agency this summer and this injury certainly won't help his case. Regardless, the former first-round pick is unlikely to have any fantasy value in most formats.
Mikael Backlund scores Saturday | 04/14/2013 8:49 AM
NewsMikael Backlund found the back of the net on Saturday.
ImpactBacklund has seven goals and 14 points in 26 games. The Flames don't have much left to play for as a team, but every point Backlund gets will help him in his contract negotiations. He's scheduled to become a restricted free agent this summer.
Mikael Backlund needs a new contract | 04/12/2013 8:37 AM
NewsMikael Backlund is scheduled to become a restricted free agent this summer.
Impact"Obviously, the better I play, the better contract I'll get - that's how it works," says Backlund. "So I'm trying to do my best and show them that I want to be a part of this team, I want to be part of the future of this organization. Hopefully, I'd like to stay here." Backlund is 24 and has never been much of an option in standard fantasy leagues. He inked a one-year, $725,000 contract for the 2012-13 campaign.
Mikael Backlund to center Cervenka, Baertschi | 04/08/2013 4:52 AM
NewsLook for Mikael Backlund to center Roman Cervenka and Sven Baertschi on Monday.
ImpactThe Flames will take on the Colorado Avalanche and with Baertschi being recalled on Sunday due to the injury suffered by Brian McGrattan, Calgary coach Bob Hartley will play his three talented European trained players together, hoping the line has some magic together. Backlund could be worth a pickup if the line clicks, in deeper leagues.
Flames to scratch Mikael Backlund, Butler | 03/22/2013 5:28 PM
NewsMikael Backlund will take a seat as a healthy scratch Friday.
ImpactHe will relegated to the press box against Columbus, along with defenseman Chris Butler. They will be replaced by Roman Cervenka and Derek Smith in the Flames' lineup.

Mikael Backlund could return on Monday | 03/18/2013 6:15 AM
NewsMikael Backlund (cracked bone in foot) could return to the Calgary lineup as early as Monday.
ImpactThe Flames are in Dallas Monday to play the Stars and you may see Backlund in between Blake Comeau and Jiri Hudler after x-rays revealed that his foot injury suffered when he took a Kevin Klein shot off his foot Friday. "You feel bad for the guy," Comeau said about Backlund who has already missed 14 games this season with a knee injury. "He's had some tough luck with injuries last year and this year. He just adds that depth down the middle. We have some guys playing center who aren't natural centermen. So to have a guy like Backs who is a responsible player and plays hard every night - it's a big loss when he's not in the lineup." Backlund has seven points in 12 games thus far.
Backlund scores lone goal in 3-1 loss to LA | 03/12/2013 1:41 AM
NewsMikael Backlund scored his fourth goal of the season in the Calgary Flames 3-1 loss to the LA Kings. This was his second game since coming back from a knee injury.
ImpactHe has only played nine games thus far due to a knee injury, but he has been solid, scoring four times in 10 games. The skill is there but it's consistency the young Swede needs to take the next step in being a top six forward. The Flames will have to rebuild sooner rather than later, and the Flames brass hope he becomes a big part of that future. He's definitely worth a look in deep leagues.

Mikael Backlund skating in practice | 03/05/2013 7:15 AM
NewsMikael Backlund (knee) skated in practice on Monday.
ImpactBacklund will wear a knee brace upon his return and is getting close to returning as he was wearing a yellow non-contact jersey in practice Monday. "Yeah, it feels good," Backlund said. "I can do everything. The next step is the contact, being able to battle and stuff and see how that feels. We'll see when that is, but it felt good (Monday). I've pushed hard two days now. Every day, waking up, it's been a better day. I'm happy with that and happy with the progress . . . faster than projected." Backlund has three goals and four points in eight games this season as it was looking like he was beginning to emerge as a good center before his injury but we would wait a couple of games to see how he plays before activating him.
Mikael Backlund (knee) out four to six weeks | 02/09/2013 4:26 AM
NewsMikael Backlund, who was just beginning to emerge as a bona fide top-six forward for Calgary, suffered a sprained knee in Thursday's 4-3 overtime victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets and will be out at least a month.
ImpactThe 23-year-old center was placed on injured reserve Friday. For Backlund, who had scored three times in his first eight games, it's his third significant injury since the beginning of last season. The Flames' first-round pick in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft missed nearly six weeks after breaking a finger in training camp in 2011-12. Then the skilled Swede suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in mid-February. "Thnx for all the great support #CofRed. I hope to be back ASAP and help the team making the playoffs!" Backlund wrote Friday evening on his Twitter account. According to the Flames, Backlund is officially out four-to-six weeks due to a Grade 2 sprain of his MCL. That's a mouthful of medical mumbo-jumbo. It's also a big chunk of action in a condensed schedule. If Backlund is, indeed, sidelined for the full six weeks, he'll miss 20 games. "Obviously, it's disappointing," said Flames GM Jay Feaster. "It's disappointing for him. He's frustrated."
Flames place Mikael Backlund on IR | 02/08/2013 6:19 PM

Mikael Backlund scores his first goal of 2013 | 01/24/2013 8:51 AM
NewsMikael Backlund netted his first goal of the season on Wednesday.
ImpactBacklund struggles last season with just four goals and 11 points in 41 games. He should take a step forward this season, but not to the extent that we can recommend owning him in standard leagues.
Backlund gets a hat trick in a scrimmage | 01/17/2013 10:21 AM
NewsMikael Backlund had a hat trick in Wednesday's scrimmage.
ImpactThat should help Backlund build a little extra confidence going into the shortened season. "Coming from last year where I struggled to score a lot, it's always good to score," said Backlund. "I'm just going to try and carry this with me. Still, it's just a scrimmage, but it always feels good to score." Backlund had four goals and 11 points in 41 games in 2011-12. He should do better than that in the shortened season, but we can't recommend drafting him in standard leagues.
Mikael Backlund in mix as top two center | 01/15/2013 7:04 AM
NewsMikael Backlund has a chance to be a top two center for Calgary this season.
ImpactThe Flames are weak down the middle as Roman Cervenka is out with blood clots and there is so little else on the team that they are moving Alex Tanguay from the wing to center, giving Backlund his chance. "We had a little talk, me and Bob," Backlund said on Monday. "A good meeting. Roman's out, he's a great player and we want him back as soon as possible. For me, that doesn't change anything, if he's in or out. I still have to prove myself, show them I'm good enough for this level, show them I'm a good top-six player. If I want to be a top-six player, it doesn't matter if guys are hurt or not." This could be Backlund's last chance for a top two role in Calgary so this is an important season for the 23-year-old. Take a chance and draft him very late in the deepest of leagues only.
Top line duty may await Mikael Backlund | 01/08/2013 4:52 PM
NewsMikael Backlund could be a sleeper to center Calgary's top line when the regular season begins.
ImpactHe lost his shot at that job last year when he suffered a broken finger in a pre-season practice and he ended up posting just 11 points in 41 games. Backlund should arrive at camp with plenty of confidence this time around after playing very well with Vasteras in Sweden's second division. He found a great of chemistry with St. Louis forward Patrik Berglund, which helped him register 12 goals and 30 points in 23 games. He would also fit more comfortably into the role than trying to convert a winger and would be the next best option if Roman Cervenka isn't healthy enough.
