Karl Alzner pumped for 2014-15 campaign | 07/17/2014 2:29 PM
NewsKarl Alzner is excited for the 2014-15 campaign after the Capitals signed defensemen Matt Niskanen and Brooks Orpik this summer.
Impact"I'm fired up about it," Alzner said when asked about the upgrade on the blue line. "I think we have, on paper right now, one of the deepest blue lines, so I'm happy about that. You know that you have to pay players to get them sometimes and we're happy, I'm happy, for all the guys whenever they can get a good paycheck and that's great. So if we're going to have to pay guys numbers that other people don't necessarily agree with and we want that player and need that player, then it doesn't matter to us - you've just got to get them." Well, obviously it's not that simple in a cap-based league, but regardless, the Capitals defense certainly has been upgraded this summer. As for Alzner in particular, he got next to no power-play ice time last season and that certainly won't change now that Niskanen has joined the team.
Karl Alzner collects 2 assists Sunday | 03/17/2014 10:49 AM
NewsKarl Alzner picked up two assists in Sunday's win over Toronto.
ImpactThe defensive-minded rearguard has 16 points along with 121 blocked shots in 69 games this season.
Karl Alzner scores his first of the season | 12/08/2013 10:45 AM
NewsKarl Alzner scored his first goal of the season Saturday.
ImpactIt was the game winner and it was the first goal Alzner has scored at home in his career. He now has six career goals in the NHL and has a goal and five helpers with a plus-four rating and 10 penalty minutes. While he has no fantasy value in traditional pools, his defensive play is getting him some consideration to play for Team Canada at the Sochi Olympics.
Karl Alzner to play alongside John Carlson | 10/31/2013 10:15 AM
NewsCoach Adam Oates is reuniting Karl Alzner and John Carlson on the blueline.
ImpactOates is concerned about the defensive play of the Capitals and Carlson is minus-five thus far with his ex-partner Mike Green a minus-seven. Oates is hoping that a return of Carlson and Alzner will help. Alzner is solid defensively and that should help Carlson.
Karl Alzner hopes to land a spot on Canada | 08/22/2013 11:47 AM
NewsKarl Alzner plans to put his best foot forward at Team Canada's orientation camp to try to earn a roster spot for the Winter Olympics.
Impact"From what I've heard at least, they're looking for a left-handed shut down defenseman that can skate. That is usually the way I like to view myself," Alzner said. "When you're going up against the best players in the NHL you're always kind of looking [at other defensemen] and thinking 'Oh that guy can skate better than me, that guy's got a better stick than me.' You're always kind of picking things apart, but realistically I think that I have an opportunity. It's going to come down to how I'm playing at the time and also injuries, which we all know can happen so randomly." Alzner is one of three defensemen invited to camp to never represent Canada in international competition at the senior level, which will make him a long shot to earn a roster spot.
Karl Alzner shocked by Olympic camp invite | 07/26/2013 5:36 PM
NewsKarl Alzner's invitation to Team Canada's Olympic orientation camp came as a surprise to him.
ImpactAlzner was so startled to get a phone call from St. Louis Blues GM Doug Armstrong that he assumed the Blues had traded for him. "I was thinking, `Can we be making trades right now? How can we just re-sign [a four-year contract extension with the Caps] and then get traded?" Alzner explained. "There was a whirlwind of thoughts going through my head, all in a matter of seconds. It was pretty funny." Needless to say, Alzner is thrilled to be on the list of people invited to attend the camp.
Karl Alzner happy for security of longer deal | 07/19/2013 10:32 AM
NewsKarl Alzner is happy for the security his four-year/$11.2 million contract provides him with.
ImpactAlzner ended up settling for a very reasonable $2.8 million cap hit. "For me, it's mainly about security, being able to stay in one place," Alzner said. "Knowing you have a deal for the next four year was something we were really interested in. Hopefully, it's all in one place and I'm not traded or anything like that." He's a key blueliner for the Capitals, but his lack of offensive upside hinders his fantasy value in standard leagues.
Karl Alzner hopes Capitals add some more help | 07/11/2013 8:45 PM
NewsKarl Alzner hopes the Washington Capitals add another noteworthy free agent.
Impact"We haven't done a whole lot, trying to lock up some of the guys right now," Alzner said. "But there's still a ton of good players out there that, if we have the opportunity to get, can help us tremendously." The Capitals don't have a lot of cap space, but at this point there might be some players open to signing relatively cheap one-year contracts with an eye of proving themselves for the 2014 free agency period.
Karl Alzner signs four-year deal with Caps | 07/10/2013 4:27 PM
NewsKarl Alzner inked a four-year deal with the Capitals worth $11.2 million.
ImpactAlzner was a restricted free agent. He is a 24-year-old top-pair, shutdown defenseman who will be very affordable for the Capitals, as he comes with just a $2.8 million cap hit. He had five points in 48 games last season. "We are very pleased to sign Karl Alzner to a contract extension," said general manager George McPhee. "Karl is just entering his prime and has been a model of consistency for our organization since he entered the League. He plays tough and valuable minutes against some of the NHL's top players every game."
Caps extend qualifying offer to Karl Alzner | 07/02/2013 1:26 PM
NewsWashington Capitals extend qualifying offer to Karl Alzner.
ImpactThis was just a formality for the Capitals, who have said they'll match any and all offer to Alzner and fellow RFA Marcus Johansson. Alzner only had one goal and five points in 48 games last season but is a steady presence on the Caps' blue line at just 24 years old. Alzer doesn't have much fantasy value at this point.
Caps will match offer sheets for their RFAs | 06/26/2013 11:26 AM
NewsWashington GM George McPhee plans to match any offer sheet sent to defenseman Karl Alzner or forward Marcus Johansson.
Impact"We would always match," McPhee said Monday. "We're not going to allow other clubs to determine who's in our lineup or who's not in our lineup. We would match and adjust in another way." Both players are key restricted free agents, who the Capitals are expected to sign.
Karl Alzner: Offer sheet would be 'weird' | 05/25/2013 1:27 PM
NewsKarl Alzner hasn't thought about the possibility of getting an offer sheet.
ImpactAlzner is scheduled to become a restricted free agent this summer. "That would be weird," Alzner said of the possibility of accepting an offer sheet. "Like I said, I don't know anything but [Washington]. It would be strange." Washington will almost certainly re-sign Alzner, but the Capitals are close to the salary cap and that might make the process a little more difficult.
Karl Alzner set to become a RFA | 05/22/2013 12:38 PM
NewsKarl Alzner is a restricted free agent this summer.
ImpactHe made $1.27 million last season and carried a cap hit of $1,285,000. The steady, 24-year-old defenseman will no doubt be getting a raise and given his importance to the team it will probably be a long-term deal.
Will Caps ever get over hump w/ their stars? | 05/14/2013 12:26 PM
NewsThe growing concern for the Capitals is whether they will ever make the leap in the playoffs with their current homegrown stars.
ImpactAlex Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom and Mike Green are no longer young players in the league. Yet they also don't have an Eastern Conference final appearance between them and have two first-round-and-outs in the past four years. Will the Caps ever get over the hump? "Funny you ask that," Karl Alzner said. "A little bit. I don't know if that's the right mentality. I'm sure it's not the right mentality. But we all play this game to win and when you see one year after another year disappointments - and I know it's only been three playoffs for me. ... You don't want to see the time tick away. You want to at least get a taste of it before you're done.' So I hopefully have a long time. But, yeah, I've thought about it."
Capitals can advance with win at MSG in Gm6 | 05/11/2013 7:12 PM
NewsThe Capitals have a chance to advance to the second round by winning their first game at Madison Square Garden in the series in Game 6.
The Washington TImes
ImpactIn fact, the Rangers haven't won on the road in this series either. The Capitals know MSG will be rocking, but they believe it's a matter of adjusting to the way New York played in Games 3 and 4, which they believe has happened now. "They made adjustments for Game 3 and it took us two games to figure that out," Karl Alzner said. "We thought we had it figured out in Game 4, but they came out really hard again. So it's just all about being able to adapt, and they changed and we didn't get there quick enough. There's no doubt that it's a tough building to play in; they'll have more energy and more emotion but we've got to use that [to our advantage]."
Karl Alzner posts first point in 13 games | 02/13/2013 1:09 PM
NewsKarl Alzner got his first point of the year in Tuesday's comeback win over Florida.
ImpactHe scored on a slapshot at the 5:33 mark of the second to even the score at 2-2 in what would eventually become a 6-5 overtime win. Alzner is known more for his defensive game than offense, so it isn't surprising that he had been pointless in the team's previous 12 games. He has averaged nearly 21 minutes of ice time per contest and has 25 blocked shots to his credit.
Caps say little mistakes cause for poor start | 02/06/2013 10:56 PM
NewsThe Capitals say the little mistakes are adding up to big problems through the season's first 10 games.
The Washington Times
ImpactThe Caps have been a big disappointment at 2-7-1, which is the worst record in the NHL. They rank among the bottom third in goals for (2.30 per game) and top three in the most goals given up (3.60 per game). "I don't think there's one big gaping problem, but I think there's a couple little things that are really hurting us," defenseman Karl Alzner said. "I think that our [power play and penalty kill] haven't been very good. . And I think that some of the little mental errors that we're making, it doesn't seem like we're getting the same thing for. A lot of it's just going against." Sure, the little mistakes add up but it seems like there are bigger issues right now for this team.
Karl Alzner happy with team's resiliency | 01/26/2013 12:33 PM
NewsKarl Alzner was happy with the resiliency the Capitals showed in their 3-2 overtime loss to the Devils.
ImpactCoach Adam Oates had described his team as "fragile" a day earlier. The message was sent, as they went down 2-0 but came back to grab a point. "We've been a pretty weak minded team the last few games," defenseman Karl Alzner said. "Tonight was the first night we showed a little bit of resilience and actually battled. ... Everyone was just so mad at the way we were playing and the results that we're not getting. No one's happy about that, so guys were battling as hard as they possibly could."
