NewsSan Jose Sharks extend qualifying offers to Nick Petrecki and Marek Viedensky.
ImpactPetrecki was the Sharks' first-round pick in 2007 but has yet to live up to the draft status. He spent the past four seasons with AHL Worchester before making his NHL debut this season. He had no points and no penalty minutes in one game in 2013. Viedensky has yet to appear in an NHL game since being drafted in the seventh round in 2009. The team also declined qualifying offers to Tommy Grant and Thomas Heemskerk, meaning both players become unrestricted free agents. Justin Sefton was not offered a contract by the June 1 deadline and was eligible to re-enter the draft.

ImpactPetrecki is on a two-way deal so sending the 23-year-old down to Worcester of the AHL will save the Sharks money. He has been a disappointment since being drafted in the first round, 28th overall in the 2007 Draft when the Sharks loved his hard hitting and heavy shot from the point.

ImpactThe move could be a precursor to Brent Burns getting back into the lineup, but that may or may not happen as soon as Saturday afternoon. Petrecki played in just one game with San Jose and he'll probably head to the minors if he clears.

ImpactThe Sharks wouldn't reveal the financial terms of the deal, but CapGeek.com reported that it's a two-way contract worth $650,000 annually in the NHL. Petrecki has three points and 53 penalty minutes in 16 AHL contests.
