Can shut down opposing centers. Will become more effective offensively as he gains further experience.|
|Flaws:||Needs to become a little more confident in the offensive zone, and differ less to his linemates when on the attack. NewsPenguins center Brandon Sutter is still looking for his scoring touch he had with Carolina five years ago.
ImpactAt just 20-years-old, Sutter scored 21 goals and 40 points in 72 games during 2009-2010. He did score five goals and two assists in 13 playoff games last spring, so Pittsburgh hopes he can built upon that. Sutter will lliekly be the team's third-line center.

Impact"I'm not concerned at all about signing Sutter," Rutherford said. "Honestly, I'm not concerned about any of the restricted guys. At some point, we'll have them signed." Sutter is the biggest name among the Pens' restricted free agents, a list that also includes right winger Nick Spaling and defenseman Simon Despres. The Pens want to sign Sutter to a long-term deal, largely because he was outstanding in the most recent Stanley Cup playoffs, scoring five goals in 13 games and playing top-notch defense.

Penguins.nhl.com on Twitter
ImpactSutter left the Penguins' series-winning game on Monday before it's conclusion. "I'm happy with the way it's gone the last two days," Sutter said. "I'm feeling pretty good. It shouldn't be a problem going forward." Sutter is a solid defensive forward and that's something that Pittsburgh certainly needs.

NewsThird-line center Brandon Sutter had the winning goal in Game 1, a 4-3 triumph over the Columbus Blue Jackets, when the Penguins' top four scorers combined for no goals and a minus-4 rating.
ImpactBig goals from Sutter don't surprise Pittsburgh coach Dan Blysma. "When he's scored a goal, it's always been a big goal," Bylsma said. "He's right around the number he always seems to be at - 12 to 15 goals a year - but they always seem to be big goals." Eight of the Penguins' 12 points in Game 1 were produced by defensemen or forwards who finished the game skating on the bottom two lines. The teams meet again for Game 2 today.

NewsBrandon Sutter netted the game-winning goal for Pittsburgh in Game 1 of their first round series.

Brandon Sutter scores two goals for Penguins | 04/06/2014 10:41 PM
NewsWith all-stars such as Sidney Crosby and Chris Kunitz out of the lineup, the Penguins got a two-goal night out of center Brandon Sutter Sunday night.
ImpactSutter scored the first two goals of the game in the Penguins' 3-2 shootout win over the Avalanche in Colorado. They were Sutter's 12th and 13th goals of the season. Jussi Jokinen had the lone goal in a shootout. Jokinen put a backhand over Avalanche goalie Semyon Varlamov in the second round. The Penguins played without a number of injured players, including Crosby, who missed his first game of the season because of an upper-body injury. ImpactMalkin is expected to miss the next 2-3 weeks, which basically translates to the being sidelined for the rest of the regular season. Philadelphia is also reportedly pursuing Kesler, so the Canucks might be able to maximize their return by pitting the bitter rivals against each other.
Brandon Sutter projected to play on top line | 01/15/2014 4:06 PM

Penguins.nhl.com on Twitter
ImpactSutter will play alongside Chris Kunitz and Sidney Crosby on Wednesday. This is a first for Sutter as he's never served as a winger in the NHL. "It'll be pretty cool," Sutter said. "I'm actually looking forward to the opportunity and I don't now what the plan is moving forward in terms of when we start getting guys back or whatever, but for now I'm going to go there and try to have some fun and I'm looking forward to it." This is likely a temporary assignment influenced by the Penguins long list of injured players, but it should still boost Sutter's short-term fantasy value.

NewsBrandon Sutter collected an empty-net goal on Monday.
ImpactIt ended a seven-game goal scoring slump. The Penguins have been pleased with Sutter's contributions on the third line, but he would like to contribute more offensively. As it is, he doesn't have much fantasy value with six goals and 13 points in 35 games in 2013-14.
Penguins very happy with Brandon Sutter | 12/12/2013 10:20 AM
NewsThe Pittsburgh Penguins have been very happy with Brandon Sutter's efforts on the third line.
Impact"I think Brandon has played his best hockey in his last 15 games," Penguins coach Dan Bylsma said. Sutter has five goals and 11 points in 32 contests this season, but he's mostly known for his defensive efforts. With that in mind, he's happy with how he's been playing, even if he would like to chip in more offensively. Aside from him, the third line has been a revolving door for players and while he doesn't feel that hurts the line defensively, it does make it harder for him to develop the chemistry with others that leads to goals.
Brandon Sutter scores first of the season | 10/31/2013 8:29 AM
NewsBrandon Sutter scored his first goal of the season Wednesday in the Penguins 3-2 win.
ImpactThere may have been some doubt as to whether or not Sutter was going to suit up on Wednesday as it was thought he could be dealing with a hand or wrist injury picked up on Monday. But he played and potted his first of the season.

NewsBrandon Sutter might be dealing with a hand or wrist injury.

No big deal for Brandon Sutter to face Canes | 10/28/2013 10:11 AM
NewsIt's no longer a big deal for Brandon Sutter to be facing his ex-Carolina Hurricane teammates.
ImpactSutter was traded in the Jordan Staal deal and Monday's matchup will be the fifth time since the trade. "The first couple [of games] are kind of tough, but I think that now, I'm kind of past that," Sutter said. "We played them already this year and it just felt like a normal game. It just feels like playing hockey." Sutter has four assists in 11 games this season after scoring 11 goals and 19 points in 48 games last year.
Brandon Sutter scores Penguins' lone goal | 06/03/2013 10:59 PM
NewsBrandon Sutter scored the only goal for the Pittsburgh Penguins in Tuesday's 6-1 Game 3 loss.
ImpactSutter snapped one past Tuukka Rask not long after Marc-Andre Fleury replaced Tomas Vokoun. For a minute, it appeared the Penguins were poised to get back into the game and the series, but Brad Marchand's goal less 25 seconds later seemingly put an end to that idea. Truth be told, if Sutter is Pittsburgh's leading scorer, chances are the night is not going as planned.
Brandon Sutter hopes to chip in offensively | 06/03/2013 10:37 AM
NewsBrandon Sutter is hoping to chip in offensive in the Eastern Conference finals.
ImpactIf the Boston Bruins prioritize shutting down the Penguins' top two lines, then it will be up to Sutter and the rest of the third line to pick up the slack. "Our line can't just play defense," Sutter said. "We need to score goals. We know it." Pittsburgh will attempt to bounce back after suffering a 3-0 loss in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals.
| 05/28/2013 8:26 AM
NewsBrandon Sutter is still learning during his first playoff appearance.
Impact"I think in the first series for Brandon against the Islanders, he found out a little bit about playoff hockey," coach Dan Bylsma said. "The intensity of it, the ups and downs, the emotions of winning hockey games and losing hockey games. The big game in Game 5 (when he won 67 percent of his faceoffs), Game 6 (when he won only 28 percent), all those things you learn." He will enter the Eastern Conference Finals with one goal and one assist in 11 playoff games, but led the Penguins with two goals in three regular-season contests against the Boston Bruins.
Brandon Sutter unheralded leader for Pens | 05/26/2013 8:27 AM
NewsBrandon Sutter believes the Penguins began to play better defensively toward the end of their series win over Ottawa.
ImpactThe Penguins are well-known for their offensive play, but the team's defense, led by the underrated Sutter, is a crucial factor in their success."The last two games were our best two defensive games of the series," Sutter said. "That seems to be the difference for us. We score more goals when we play better defense. We know we can score goals. We have a lot of weapons, obviously. When we take care of our own end, it's kind of a special group." The Penguins will have their work cut out for them as they take on the Bruins in the Eastern Conference Finals.
Brandon Sutter seeks faceoff consistency | 05/23/2013 12:45 PM
NewsBrandon Sutter has struggled with consistency on his faceoffs during the postseason, but he isn't overly concerned.
Impact"It's funny, because it's game to game. One game, you'll struggle really bad," he said. "The next game, against the same guys, you'll do really well. It's tough to get that consistency. That's the challenge." Going into Game 4, he flirted with nearly a 60 percent winning percentage in three straight contests. On Wednesday though, he won just 44.44 percent of his draws. Sutter has two points in 10 postseason contests.
Brandon Sutter scores after brief demotion | 05/08/2013 10:15 AM

ImpactHe skated there for the latter part of Game 3 on Sunday as well. Sutter scored his first goal since April 17 in Tuesday's 6-4 loss to the Islanders after he was reunited with Matt Cooke and Brenden Morrow on the third line. Cooke and Morrow picked up assists on Sutter's first point of the playoffs.
Brandon Sutter scores twice Wednesday night | 04/18/2013 11:51 AM
NewsBrandon Sutter tallied two goals in Pittsburgh's 6-4 win over Montreal Wednesday night.
ImpactThe two-goal effort snapped a 10-game scoreless slump for the two-way center. Sutter has 11 markers and 16 points in 43 games with the Penguins. He appears to be developing some chemistry with Brenden Morrow, which should bode well for the team once their lines return to order and they get some players back from injury.
Brandon Sutter leads Penguins over Bruins | 03/12/2013 10:40 PM
NewsBrandon Sutter scored two goals to lead Pittsburgh to a 3-2 lead over Boston on Tuesday.

NewsBrandon Sutter will make his return to Raleigh Thursday night when the Penguins visit the Hurricanes.
ImpactMuch of the pre-game hype will center around Jordan Staal playing against Pittsburgh for the first time since being trade last June, but Sutter is the one will be playing in his old building from a different perspective. "Obviously, it's a little extra special when you're playing against a bunch of friends and fans who really treated me well," said Sutter. He has four goals and four assists in 20 games this season, but has received a bump in responsibility with Evgeni Malkin sidelined.

Brandon Sutter, third line shine in scrimmage | 01/17/2013 12:13 PM
NewsThe Penguins' third line received high marks for their performance in Wednesday's scrimmage.
ImpactBrandon Sutter, Matt Cooke and Tyler Kennedy got into the scoring act in a 5-4 win for Team Black over Team White. Cooke scored two goals set up by Sutter and Kennedy concluded the match with a goal and an assist. Coach Dan Bylsma had the three of them together on the first day of training camp, so they'll probably open the regular season as a unit as well.
Brandon Sutter may see time with Malkin, Neal | 01/08/2013 3:52 PM
NewsCoach Dan Bylsma said he may try out Brandon Sutter alongside Evgeni Malkin and James Neal this season.
Impact"I also feel like I wouldn't anchor (new acquisition Brandon) Sutter to that third-line center position," Bylsma said. "If he is winning a lot of the right-hand draws he could conceivably go take the draw and be on Geno's line. There could be some movement." Sutter is slated to play the majority of the year as the team's third-line pivot, but he is hoping to have a bigger offensive role with the club than he received with Carolina.
