Jonathan Toews goalless in playoffs | 05/19/2013 6:17 AM
NewsJonathan Toews has yet to find the back of the net in the playoffs.
ImpactAfter picking up 23 goals and 48 points in 47 regular season games, the Chicago captain has only three assists in seven playoff games. Toews struggled at the faceoff dot, winning only nine of 22 after entering the game with 73 wins on the draw against only 49 losses. Toews is going to need to pick up his game Monday for Game 3 in Detroit or the Blackhawks could find themselves in trouble.
Jonathan Toews questions refereeing Saturday | 05/18/2013 5:01 PM
NewsJonathan Toews took a jab at the refereeing after Saturday's 4-1 loss to Detroit.
Mark Lazerus on Twitter
Impact"There's a lot of clutch and grab, lot of interference, and if they're going to let that go, that's something we need to know," Toews said. "It's just tough to understand sometimes why we get roughing and hooking penalties, [and] that doesn't go both ways. If that's the way they're going to play, we need to play the same way." Toews added that he anticipates Game 3 in Detroit will be even more difficult for Chicago than Saturday's defeat.

ImpactToews tied for the league-lead with 56 takeaways and ranked third in the NHL with a plus-28 rating. He also ranked second with a 59.9 faceoff percentage. Toews will face stiff competition from Pavel Datsyuk and Patrice Bergeron as he goes for his first Selke Trophy.
Jonathan Toews not upset by Hart Trophy snub | 05/11/2013 9:32 AM
NewsBlackhawks center Jonathan Toews understands why he wasn't a finalist for the Hart Trophy despite enjoying a great season.
ImpactToews acknowledges that Alex Ovechkin, Sidney Crosby and John Tavares are all worthy candidates for the award and even went as far as to say teammate Patrick Kane would also have been a good choice. "There's another guy across the room that deserves it just as much, probably more," Toews said. "To have two guys in the talks like that, it always shows that you have a great supporting cast. It's nice. It's an honor. But you don't get to that point if your team doesn't have success the way we did this year. So huge credit to those guys."
Jonathan Toews ends scoring slump Thursday | 05/10/2013 9:14 AM
NewsJonathan Toews ended his scoring slump on Thursday.
ImpactToews had no points in the first four games of Chicago's first-round series against Minnesota. However, Toews managed to pick up two assists on Thursday. That might give him a little extra confidence going into the next round. Chicago did just find without Toews being an offensive leader in this series, but there will come a point where they'll be looking to him to score or set up the big goal.
Jonathan Toews struggling in opening round | 05/06/2013 7:15 AM
NewsJonathan Toews has been struggling offensively in the first three games of the opening round series against the Wild.
ImpactToews has only one assist as he garnered it on the power play in Game 1. The whole line of Toews, Marian Hossa and Brandon Saad has struggled with Hossa scoring on the power play while Saad is pointless. "We have to shoot the puck more, it comes down to that," Toews said. "We're not getting pucks to the net and we're passing up chances and trying to make too many plays. The (Wild) have good sticks (and) there's a lot of obstruction out there. You can't go out there and try to make pretty plays. It's got to be ugly and we're not doing that enough. Once we start doing that, we have the strength, the speed (and) the skill to get on the board and make things happen and take it out of their hands instead of just letting them be the guys that shut us down. It's more up to us than anything." Stay tuned.
Jonathan Toews doesn't miss much time | 04/14/2013 2:09 PM
NewsBreathe easy, at least for now: Jonathan Toews returned to Sunday's game in the secodn period.

NewsJonathan Toews needed to head toward the locker room after a hit by David Backes.
ImpactIt's unclear how severe Toews' issue might be, but it could be a big deal for fantasy owners if he even misses just a few games. The Chicago Blackhawks must play it safe with so much already settled playoffs-wise, so that might mean a conservative approach with "Captain Serious."
Hawks not satisfied yet, Jonathan Toews says | 04/13/2013 10:25 AM
NewsThe Chicago Blackhawks secured their division championship with a 3-2 shootout win over the Detroit Red Wings Friday but team captain Jonathan Toews says there's still plenty of work to do.
ImpactWith the division title locked up, the Hawks can look ahead to the top seed, the Presidents' Trophy, then the playoffs. But the way the Hawks see it, there's still plenty to work on in their last eight regular-season games, including a power play that's has one goal in its last 24 chances. ``We're going to keep going,'' Toews said. ``We got our division, we got home ice in the playoffs and we just keep building. I think this really shows that we're hungry and we're really motivated to improve every single night.''

Blackhawks poor on the face off draw | 03/11/2013 5:54 AM
NewsThe Chicago Blackhawks have dropped to 20th overall in winning face off draws this season as they are at 49.4 percent.
ImpactIt's a good thing that Jonathan Toews is a member of the Blackhawks as he is at an amazing 59.5 percent winning 312 of 524 faceoffs, otherwise they would be at the bottom of the standings in the category. "We had a decent start to it and as we've trended lately we've gone on the negative side of 50-50," coach Joel Quenneville said. "We'll try to reinforce the importance of everybody on the line, be it the forwards and the 'D' helping out as well, and concentrate on the importance of coming up with the puck because lately it's been really going against us."

However, Toews still managed to tie it up and change the course of this contest to help the Blackhawks extend their points streak to 24 games - or 30 if you date it back to the 2011-12 campaign. The Blackhawks also have the fourth and fifth best players as Marian Hossa and Patrick Kane each have 23, one behind Pavel Datsyuk.
Blackhawks showing their mental toughness | 03/01/2013 10:48 AM
NewsThe Chicago Blackhawks 20-game point streak is highlighting the team's mental toughness.
ImpactChicago didn't miss a beat on Thursday after losing Corey Crawford to an upper body injury. "We have thick skin, whether momentum's going against us or there's a call we didn't like," Jonathan Toews said. "Any adversity that gets in our way, we've always been positive and stuck with it. If we're down, we can find a way to come back and make it tough for them to close out a game. We've been hungry and determined to win every game. I think you saw that again tonight." Of course, the one thing Chicago hasn't had to deal with this season is an extended cold streak. With almost half the season already gone though, Chicago might be able to get through the entire campaign without having a particularly long losing streak.

NewsJonathan Toews had nine penalty minutes for a single incident on Friday.
ImpactToews was assessed a two-minute minor for boarding the Sharks' Joe Thornton, but then Toews continued to push Thornton until the two finally dropped the gloves and fought. Toews ended up with a second minor for unsportsmanlike conduct and five for fighting. "The last few games, including last season, there's always some stuff going on, be it after the whistles or during the play. I guess it just comes down to players trying to get under your skin and test you a little bit," Toews said. "I figured at some point I had to stand up for myself. It came down to that, I guess." Before Friday, Toews had just one minor penalty all season.
Jonathan Toews takes captaincy seriously | 02/04/2013 7:59 AM
NewsJonathan Toews is taking his role as the captain of the Chicago Blackhawks seriously.
ImpactToews was named captain before the start of the 2008-09 season and now that he is 24 years of age, it means more to him. "I want to improve on how I am in the locker room, on the bench, as an individual and just bringing that positive energy, especially when things maybe don't go right," Toews said. "I'm trying to stay even-keeled and not get frustrated. That's something I've been focusing on." Toews has already lifted the Stanley Cup over his head as captain and it doesn't get better than that.
Jonathan Toews off to hot start | 02/01/2013 10:34 AM
NewsJonathan Toews didn't play in Europe during the lockout, but he's still off to a great start.
ImpactToews is evidence that there's more than one way to stay sharp over an extended layoff. He spent three days a week doing informal skates during the work stoppage. "It wasn't the same thing as playing on a team, being in Europe or being in that everyday routine. But we pushed ourselves hard," Toews said. "I'm sure a lot of guys across the league thought the same thing, that `Hey we don't know when this will end.' We just kept that optimistic feeling that at some point it was going to happen, and we wanted to be ready to play our best hockey when it did." Chicago is 6-0-1 going into Friday's game against Vancouver.

Blackhawks penalty kill perfect thus far | 01/22/2013 7:17 AM
NewsThe Chicago Blackhawks are a perfect 8-8 when it comes to the penalty kill this season.
ImpactChicago was awful last season as they were 27th in the NHL in that department after spending a lot of the season worse than that. But it's been the opposite in the early going. "Our penalty kill is great," Toews said. "Were getting pucks out and doing the little things and just making it harder on them in our zone. You do that and eventually they're going to try and make some plays and make some mistakes off that." The Blackhawks have looked very good thus far and although it is early, they have the talent to be a Stanley Cup contender.
Jonathan Toews talks with Gary Bettman | 01/21/2013 8:25 AM
NewsJonathan Toews, who was very outspoken during the lockout when it came to Gary Bettman, spoke on Sunday to the commissioner.
ImpactBettman was in Los Angeles Saturday as the Kings raised the Stanley Cup banner to the rafters. Chicago were the opponents and the two talked briefly outside the Chicago dressing room. "It was a brief but positive conversation - I'll leave it at that," Toews said. "(That) other stuff doesn't really matter anymore." Looks like all has been forgotten since both sides settled their dispute and that is good for the game of hockey.

Toews: Did lockout needed to last this long? | 01/10/2013 11:01 AM
NewsWith the lockout about to end, Jonathan Toews isn't convinced that it really had to go on this long.
Impact``It's just more of a relief," said Toews. "We're excited to get back in front of our fans and just be together on a daily basis. But the realistic thing that sets in is: Did it really have to go this far? Did we really have to miss over three months? It's unfortunate. We know we've got a long road ahead of us to try and build this game back and earn the respect from the fans again." The good news is that the two sides were still able to salvage the season, so they won't have to recover from the stigma of yet another lost campaign. The shortened season should be exciting, with even game being critical to a team's chances of making the playoffs.
