|Assets:||Has a great shot from the point. Skates extremely well for a big man and has a mean streak that can rattle opposing forwards. Owns all-around acumen.|
|Flaws:||Is still working on his positional skills, as he tends to leave the zone too early on occasion. Must be a more consistent presence and improve his defense.|
|Career Potential:||Big-minute all-round defenseman with size and upside.|

Erik Johnson finishes season with goose egg | 04/28/2013 10:25 AM
NewsColorado defenseman Erik Johnson ended the season without recording a goal.
ImpactThe former first overall pick has been a constant disappointment at the offensive end of the rink and recorded a measly four assists in 31 contests this year. He's likely off most radars as a buy-low candidate next year, with good reason.

NewsErik Johnson (wrist) will play in Colorado's season finale.
Adrian Dater on Sulia

Erik Johnson might return for finale | 04/26/2013 9:01 AM

ImpactJohnson will miss Friday's contest, but he might be able to participate in Colorado's season finale on Saturday. He has four assists in 30 games this season.
Erik Johnson still out of action | 04/23/2013 7:29 AM
NewsDo not expect to see Erik Johnson (wrist) in the lineup Tuesday.
ImpactJohnson has been out of the lineup since April 12 and has missed the last four games. It is looking more and more that he will be out for the season but with only four assists in 30 games in 2013, he really should not be in your lineup. Johnson's stock has fallen mightily in the last couple of years, especially considering he was drafted first overall in 2006.
Erik Johnson will miss Friday's game | 04/19/2013 9:37 AM
NewsErik Johnson (wrist) isn't expected to play Friday.
ImpactJohnson is day-to-day, but obviously with so time remaining in the regular season, it's possible that he's already played in his last game of this campaign. He has just four points in 30 games this season.
Johnson (wrist) misses Wednesday's practice | 04/18/2013 9:52 AM
NewsErik Johnson (wrist) wasn't on the ice for Wednesday's optional practice.

Erik Johnson misses Monday's game | 04/16/2013 7:48 AM
NewsErik Johnson (wrist) sat out Monday's game against Columbus.
ImpactJohnson has not played since injuring his wrist Thursday. He has only four assists in 30 games this season so his fantasy value is approaching absolute zero in traditional pools. He was thought to be an offensive dynamo, especially after his sophomore season in which he had 10 goals and 39 points but he has regressed severely, especially this season, so we cannot recommend the former first overall pick of the 2006 draft at this time.

Erik Johnson, Wilson might return Wednesday | 03/06/2013 11:02 AM
NewsErik Johnson (concussion) and Ryan Wilson (ankle) skated hard Tuesday and could return to the lineup Wednesday against the Chicago Blackhawks.
ImpactThe hard skate is a strong sign for Johnson, who should get medical clearance as long as he experienced no side-effects after practice. Both Johnson and Wilson are on injured reserve and will need to be activated before returning to game action. We should know more after the team's morning skate.
Erik Johnson will not play on Tuesday | 03/05/2013 8:03 AM

ImpactIt was thought that Johnson had a chance to play against Detroit but they have not been ruled out against the Blackhawks Wednesday. Stay tuned as both are still on the injured reserve list and will have to be activated before they are able to play. Johnson has only one assist in 11 games and has been a major disappointment for the Avalanche.
Erik Johnson cleared for contact | 03/04/2013 8:11 AM
NewsErik Johnson (concussion) skated on Sunday and was cleared for contact.
ImpactIt was an optional practice for the Avs but it was good for Johnson who skated hard and could be ready to return to action as early as Tuesday. It has been a disappointing season thus far for Johnson who was taken first overall in 2006 by the Blues before being traded to Colorado in Feb. 2011. He signed a four-year extension in the off-season but has only one assist in 11 games thus far this season.
Erik Johnson won't play against Jackets | 03/03/2013 11:54 AM
NewsErik Johnson will not suit up for the Avalanche when they take on the Columbus Blue Jackets Sunday.
ImpactJohnson could be nearing a return from a concussion as he'll join his teammates for their three-game road trip, but head injuries are always unpredictable so we wouldn't count on the defenseman until his return has been confirmed.

NewsErik Johnson (head) took part in Saturday's morning skate.
ImpactJohnson was wearing a non-contact jersey, but this is still a step forward. As is to be expected, there's no clear timetable for his return.

NewsErik Johnson skated Wednesday for the first time since suffering a concussion Feb. 11.
ImpactCoach Joe Sacco said the brief skate is an "encouraging" sign. It's tough to say when we can expect him to rejoin the lineup, but getting on the ice is certainly very good to see. Next step will be seeing how he feels on Thursday. Johnson has an assist in 11 games this season.
Erik Johnson still not skating | 02/26/2013 7:53 AM
NewsErik Johnson (head) has not started skating since being injured on February 11.
ImpactJohnson was hurt when hit in the head by Martin Hanzal of the Coyotes. Consider him out indefinitely for now and keep him reserved if he is on your fantasy team.
Erik Johnson is out for next three games | 02/22/2013 3:19 PM
NewsErik Johnson (head) will miss at least three more games.
ImpactJohnson will not travel with the Avalanche for their upcoming games on Saturday, Sunday, and Tuesday. He remains out indefinitely with what might be a concussion.
No current update on Erik Johnson | 02/21/2013 8:00 AM
NewsThere has been no word of late in regards to the head injury suffered by Erik Johnson.

Avs' Erik Johnson (head) is out indefinitely | 02/13/2013 6:09 PM
NewsColorado coach Joe Sacco reported after practice on Wednesday that defenseman Erik Johnson is out indefinitely with a head injury.
ImpactHe won't travel with the Avalanche to Minnesota for the start of the team's two-game road trip Thursday. Johnson was injured in the third period of Monday's game versus Phoenix on a hit from Martin Hanzal and he was not able to return. It's already been a tough season for Colorado with key members of their forward group unavailable and now they've lost their most versatile defenseman.
Erik Johnson leaves game in third period | 02/12/2013 8:17 AM
NewsErik Johnson was injured in the third period Monday and did not return.
ImpactJohnson was hit by the Coyotes Martin Hanzal and appeared to injure his shoulder or chest. There was no word after the game as to the extent of the injury so the Avs will likely update the press on Tuesday. Johnson should be the leader of the Avs rearguard corps but has struggled this season with only one assist in 11 games this season although he is a plus-one. Consider him day-to-day for now.
Avs only NHL team without goal from blueline | 02/11/2013 8:11 AM
NewsThe Colorado Avalanche are the only team in the NHL without a goal from their defensemen.
ImpactThe Avs have only seven points from their rearguards and that is bad news for a Colorado team that is struggling to win. The dealt Kevin Shattenkirk in 2011 for Erik Johnson in a larger deal with the Blues but they really miss Shattenkirk's offensive flair while Johnson has struggled in a Colorado uniform. Ryan Wilson is the top point getter with three points in eight games but is out indefinitely with am ankle injury while Johnson has one assist in 10 games.
Erik Johnson (foot) will suit up Wednesday | 02/06/2013 6:20 PM

ImpactJohnson returned to the game Saturday after passing his concussion tests but it's good news that he didn't have a relapse after the game. He is looking to bounce back after a disappointing 2011-12 season in which he had only 26 points in 73 games. Feel free to keep him in your fantasy lineup tonight.
Erik Johnson looking forward to season opener | 01/14/2013 7:29 AM
NewsErik Johnson is looking for forward to the season opener which will take place in his hometown state of Minnesota.
ImpactJohnson had a disappointing 2011-12 season as he had only 26 points in 73 games. "I'm a Minnesota guy at heart, and my dad had season tickets for the Wild growing up, but it's always good to go in there and beat them in front of family and friends, especially being their home opener and everything. It will feel that much better," Johnson said. The first overall pick in the 2006 Draft is still only 24 and his best years should still be ahead of him. Draft him late and hope he turns it around this season.
Johnson thinks Avs are in a good spot | 01/09/2013 11:33 AM
NewsErik Johnson thinks the Colorado Avalanche are in a good position going into the shortened season.
Impact"We're young, we have fresh legs. I think we're going to jump out of the gates hot and ready to go," Johnson said. "Guys are going to be champing at the bit, and we had guys playing in Europe who are going to be ready to go. It's just great to be talking about and actually playing the game again." Johnson didn't play during the lockout and will be looking to bounce back from a disappointing 2011-12 campaign. He probably will have a better season, but don't be surprise if he struggles a bit early on.
