According to a source, the New Jersey Devils haven't spoken about numbers yet in their contract talks with potential UFA David Clarkson.
The Devils have talked with their list of pending unrestricted free agents, which includes Patrik Elias, Dainius Zubrus, Marek Zidlicky and Peter Harrold, but the discussions apparently have not gone beyond preliminary stages.

Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello said the Devils' key unrestricted free agents "have to be" signed before the July 5 free agency date.
Lamoriello has already begun discussions with forwards David Clarkson, Patrik Elias and Dainius Zubrus. "We're talking to all of [the UFAs] and we'll try and expedite that as best as possibly can," Lamoriello said. The Devils also want to bring back rearguards Marek Zidlicky and Peter Harrold.

The Maple Leafs could be one of many teams interested in the services of winger David Clarkson this summer.
The unrestricted free agent is coming off his most productive NHL season and offers a combination of skill and toughness all teams covet. The bidding process Clarkson will likely net the forward a very lucrative contract once all is said and done.

You look at the goals I have compared to other guys, it's right where I should or I would be. I wasn't going to keep up that pace I was on, but I definitely would have liked to have stayed scoring like I was and just have this team keep winning."

Despite a minus-1 rating in the contest, Clarkson notched two penalty minutes and a team-leading seven shots on goal. Although his offensive pace has slowed since the start of the year, Clarkson is delivering solid production in leagues that reward PIM.

"It's like playoff hockey and this is a must win for both teams," Clarkson said. "You look at the standings and where we are. Every game is so important. Everybody is close." The Devils are four points ahead of the Rangers, but have played in two more games. Overall, New Jersey is in seventh place with 32 points and their playoff spot is far from secure.

Devils coach Pete DeBoer thinks David Clarkson's goal scoring slump is about more than just bad luck.
"I think it's a little bit of both," DeBoer said. "Your natural reaction when the puck's not going in for you is to maybe get away from some of the things that made successful. With David, for me, it's getting pucks to the net. He's a guy that gets shots on net from all different angles. We don't have a team with a real shot mentality, so that's important and I think he gets rewarded for that when he does that. When you look at his shot totals, I think there's a correlation between getting the puck to the net and the goals that go in." Clarkson has gone 12 games without a goal after netting 10 goals in his first 14 contests. He also has just 32 shots in his last 12 contests, compared to 60 shots over 14 games during his hot streak.

The 28-year-old forward was bound to cool off from his great start. He has one assist over his recent goalless span, along with 21 penalty minutes and 24 shots, so he's still been somewhat useful. "I don't know what it is," Clarkson said. "I don't consider myself a scorer who's going to score every night. I'm getting the chances but not finding the back of the net. I have to find a way to keep putting it on net and hopefully it goes in soon."

Frustration is starting to mount for the Devils.
On Thursday, they allowed a goal eight seconds into the game. After not playing since Sunday, they then managed five shots in the first period and didn't score a power play goal on three chances, as they have one in their last 11 games. New Jersey has one win in its last six games. "It's frustrating," forward David Clarkson said. "We've got to find a way to get out of this and start playing in the other team's zone a little more."

Clarkson left the game briefly before returning from the locker room with some additional tape on the wrist. Clarkson is extremely durable, so we wouldn't expect him to miss any time with this specific injury. That said, he's starting to get banged up and it wouldn't be a surprise if he received a maintenance day here or there in the next couple weeks.

Clarkson already has nine goals and six assists, after notching 30 and 16 last year. He's been a "pleasant surprise," according to Patrik Elias, especially doing this after the team lost Zach Parise. "He's in the area you have to pay a price to go," is how veteran goaltender Martin Brodeur described Clarkson. "He's around the puck. It could be behind the net, chaotic position in front of the net, he can get a quick shot off. He wants to score, he wants to go to the net with the puck. "It's tough for a goalie when you have a guy hanging around your goal all the time." With 21 penalty minutes as well, Clarkson has been a stellar fantasy player this season.

This story is beginning to get ridiculous, as Clarkson's offensive exploits alone make him one of the most valuable fantasy contributors so far this season. His ability to also rack up penalty minutes makes him this year's Scott Hartnell. Ilya Kovalchuk also scored his fourth goal of the season in the victory.

Clarkson is off to a remarkable start to the season with seven goals and five assists through nine contests. Throw in the fact that four of those have come with the man advantage and the 11 penalty minutes he has accumulated and you've a fantastic fantasy asset. Patrik Elias recorded three assists in this win while Adam Henrique was the other goal scorer for the Devils.
