D Alec Martinez makes history with OT goals | 06/14/2014 11:41 AM
NewsWith his goal 14:43 into double overtime against the Rangers to win the Stanley Cup Friday night, Kings defenseman Alec Martinez became the first player in NHL playoff history to score a pair of series-clinching goals in overtime.
ImpactHe reacted by throwing his gloves and stick in their air, but will need to watch the replays to know for sure. "I blacked out," Martinez told reporters. "I don't really remember. I think I threw my gear. I don't know. I just remember everyone coming at me and I couldn't breathe."
Cup-winning scorer once in coach's doghouse | 06/14/2014 9:51 AM
NewsAlec Martinez, who scored the double-overtime goal Friday night to give the Kings a 3-2 win over the New York Rangers as well as the Stanley Cup championship, was not a favorite of Los Angeles coach Darryl Sutter earlier in the season.
Los Angeles Times
ImpactSutter wanted a defensive-minded group that allowed the fewest goals in the NHL, but he didn't display complete trust in Martinez, subjecting the third-year player to a competition for playing time and a diet of healthy scratches that left his games played 21 shy of the 82-game regular-season total. Martinez was too mistake-prone on the defensive end for Sutter's liking. But he shored things up to finish plus-17 in goal differential. With that, he found himself in the postseason rotation, playing in all of the Kings' 26 playoff games. After scoring 11 goals in the regular season, he added five more in the playoffs. "He did whatever it took, he just wanted to play," teammate Tyler Toffoli said of Martinez.

Martinez's fifth goal of the playoffs gave L.A. their second Cup in three seasons, and allowed the Kings to lift hockey's holy grail on home ice.

NewsAlec Martinez's goal at 5:47 of the first overtime period lifted Los Angeles into the Stanley Cup Championship Series as the Kings came from behind to edge the Blackhawks 5-4 in Game 7 of the Western Conference Final in Chicago Sunday night.
ImpactThe Kings dethroned last year's Stanley Cup champions by becoming the first NHL team in history to win three straight Game 7s in the post-season. It'll be the Kings' second appearance in the Stanley Cup Final in three seasons. They will meet the Eastern Conference champion New York Rangers in the Stanley Cup final, which will begin L.A. Wednesday. The Hawks blew three leads Sunday. They were up 2-0 in the first period and 3-2 after one. They took a 4-3 lead in the second period. Marian Gaborik tied the game at 4-4 with his NHL-leading 12th playoff goal at 12:43 of the third, setting up the overtime drama. Justin Williams scored his seventh goal of the post-season in the first period, assisted on Martinez's game winner from the left point (which knuckled past Chicago goalie Corey Crawford after it was redirected off the body of Hawks defenseman Nick Leddy) and maintained his reputation for coming up big in Game 7s. Tyler Toffoli also picked up a goal and an assist for the Kings.

Los Angeles Times
ImpactAfter squandering their leads twice and falling 4-3 in Los Angeles to the Blackhawks Friday night, the Kings need to win in Chicago Sunday night. And that won't be an easy task, as the defending Stanley Cup champions are 8-1 in post-season play in Chicago this spring. "We've got a one-game playoff. . .in their building to punch a ticket to the finals," Kings defenseman Alec Martinez said, "and we've got to focus on learning from our mistakes tonight and going in there ready to play." Martinez has been remarkable in the playoffs, having been held off the scoresheet only once in his past six games. He has two goals and three assists in nine post-season games.

It gets a little wet," Martinez said of the ice. "The puck sticks a little bit." But he added: "I was impressed. It was pretty good." NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly acknowledged the ice was "a little softer and wetter for Kings practice than we would have liked." ImpactThis comes days after a two-year, $2 million pact with Jacob Muzzin. Marty.played a grand total of maybe a hundred games or whatever in the NHL. I don't even know. But he's got to play like one of our veterans. Los Angeles Times
ImpactThat doesn't mean he should be in your lineup. Martinez was touted as a bit of a sleeper by many entering the season. However, he has not produced much in the way of fantasy stats. Consider Martinez nothing more than an NHL roster filler at the moment. As such, he has no fantasy value.
