Brassard didn't have much time to think about being traded by the team that drafted him sixth overall in 2006 as he was quickly thrust into game action following the move. "Honestly, when you don't think during the day and you just show up, sometimes you play your best game," he said. "You just jump out there and make plays. I'm going to remember this the rest of my life, for sure." He also won 11 of 15 faceoffs and finished with nearly 13 minutes of ice time.

Coach Todd Richards said the ailment is "not a head injury" so at least that's some good news. The Jackets have been bitten hard by the injury bug, as Brassard joins Brandon Dubinsky, Artem Anisimov, Jack Johnson and James Wisniewski on the sidelines.

The Blackhawks (14-0-3) have set a league record with a 17-game point streak to open the season. "We know how good a team they are and how hard it is to play there," center Derick Brassard said. "We'll try to make the game into the kind of game they don't want to play. We have to make them play 200 feet from our net as much as possible." The Blue Jackets played pretty well in the first meeting, a 3-1 Chicago win on Jan. 26. "It could have gone either way in that game," Brassard said, "and I think they know that, too." Columbus has lost eight straight (0-7-1) against Chicago, dating to April 1, 2011.

This is his time to shine. He has been in and out of the dog house throughout his early career, but now the team is back into a rebuilding situation and are more dependent on the 25 year old. Whether he's a part of the future or an eventual trade chip for the Jackets, he will get the playing time to show he has what it takes to be a top six player in this league so keep him on your radar, or scoop him up in deeper leagues.

Among the changes is the shifting of Derick Brassard back to his natural center position. Brassard had been skating on the wing this year, but is expected to line up between Derek Dorsett and R.J. While his season has rightly been thought of as a disappointment so far, it's important to note that Brassard is tied with Mark Letestu for the team lead in points among forwards with six.
